Book excerpt: In this dissertation, channel estimation and channel prediction are studied for wireless communication systems. Wireless communication for time-variant channels becomes more important by the fast development of intelligent transportation systems which motivates us to propose a reduced rank channel estimator for time-variant frequency-selective high-speed railway (HSR) systems and a reduced rank channel predictor for fast time-variant flat fading channels. Moreover, the potential availability of large bandwidth channels at mm-wave frequencies and the small wavelength of the mm-waves, offer the mm-wave massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication as a promising technology for 5G cellular networks. The high fabrication cost and power consumption of the radio frequency (RF) units at mm-wave frequencies motivates us to propose a low-power hybrid channel estimator for mm-wave MIMO orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The work on HSR channel estimation takes advantage of the channel's restriction to low dimensional subspaces due to the time, frequency and spatial correlation of the channel and presents a low complexity linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) estimator for MIMO-OFDM HSR channels. The channel estimator utilizes a four-dimensional (4D) basis expansion channel model obtained from band-limited generalized discrete prolate spheroidal (GDPS) sequences. Exploiting the channel's band-limitation property, the proposed channel estimator outperforms the conventional interpolation based least square (LS) and MMSE estimators in terms of estimation accuracy and computational complexity, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate the robust performance of the proposed estimator for different delay, Doppler and angular spreads. Channel state information (CSI) is required at the transmitter for improving the performance gain of the spatial multiplexing MIMO systems through linear precoding. In order to avoid the high data rate feedback lines, which are required in fast time-variant channels for updating the transmitter with the rapidly changing CSI, a subframe-wise channel tracking scheme is presented. The proposed channel predictor is based on an assumed DPS basis expansion model (DPS-BEM) for exploiting the variation of the channel coefficients inside each sub-frame and an autoregressive (AR) model of the basis coefficients over each transmitted frame. The proposed predictor properly exploits the channel's restriction to low dimensional subspaces for reducing the prediction error and the computational complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed channel predictor out-performs the DPS based minimum energy (ME) predictor for different ranges of normalized Doppler frequencies and has better performance than the conventional Wiener predictor for slower time-variant channels and almost the similar performance to it for very fast time-variant channels with the reduced amount of computational complexity. The work on the hybrid mm-wave channel estimator considers the sparse nature of the mm-wave channel in angular domain and leverages the compressed sensing (CS) tools for recovering the angular support of the MIMO-OFDM mm-wave channel. The angular channel is treated in a continuous framework which resolves the limited angular resolution of the discrete sparse channel models used in the previous CS based channel estimators. The power leakage problem is also addressed by modeling the continuous angular channel as a multi-band signal with the bandwidth of each sub-band being proportional to the amount of power leakage. The RF combiner is designed to be implemented using a network of low-power switches for antenna subset selection based on a multi-coset sampling pattern. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid channel estimator both in terms of the estimation accuracy and the RF power consumption.

Book excerpt: Multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) has been considered as a strong candidate for the beyond 3G (B3G) wireless communication systems, due to its high data-rate wireless transmission performance. It is well known that the advantages promised by MIMO-OFDM systems rely on the precise knowledge of the channel state information (CSI). In real wireless environments, however, the channel condition is unknown. Therefore, channel estimation is of crucial importance in MIMO-OFDM systems. Semi-blind channel estimation as a combination of the training-based or pilot-assisted method and the pure blind approach is considered to be a feasible solution for practical wireless systems due to its better estimation accuracy as well as spectral efficiency. In this thesis, we address the semi-blind channel estimation issue of MIMO-OFDM systems with an objective to develop very efficient channel estimation approaches. In the first part of the dissertation, several nulling-based semi-blind approaches are presented for the estimation of time-domain MIMO-OFDM channels. By incorporating a blind constraint that is derived from MIMO linear prediction (LP) into a training-based least-square method, a semi-blind solution for the time-domain channel estimation is first obtained. It is revealed through a perturbation analysis that the semi-blind solution is not subject to signal perturbation and therefore is superior to pure blind estimation methods. The LP-based semi-blind method is then extended for the channel estimation of MIMO-OFDM systems with pulse-shaping. By exploiting the pulse-shaping filter in the transmitter and the matched filter in the receiver, a very efficient semi-blind approach is developed for the estimation of sampling duration based multipath channels. A frequency-domain correlation matrix estimation algorithm is also presented to facilitate the computation of time-domain second-order statistics required in the LP-based method. The nulling-based semi-blind estimation issue of sparse MIMO-OFDM channels is also addressed. By disclosing and using a relationship between the positions of the most significant taps (MST) of the sparse channel and the lags of nonzero correlation matrices of the received signal, a novel estimation approach consisting of the MST detection and the sparse channel estimation, both in a semi-blind fashion, is developed. An intensive simulation study of all the proposed nulling-based methods with comparison to some existing techniques is conducted, showing a significant superiority of the new methodologies. The second part of the dissertation is dedicated to the development of two signal-perturbation-free (SPF) semi-blind channel estimation algorithms based on a novel transmit scheme that bears partial information of the second-order statistics of the transmitted signal to receiver. It is proved that the new transmit scheme can completely cancel the signal perturbation error in the noise-free case, thereby improving largely the estimation accuracy of correlation matrix for channel estimation in noisy conditions. It is also shown that the overhead caused by the transmission of the 8PF data is negligible as compared to that of regular pilot signals. By using the proposed transmit scheme, a whitening rotation (WR)-based algorithm is first developed for frequency-domain MIMO-OFDM channel estimation. It is shown through both theoretical analysis and simulation study that the new WR-based algorithm significantly outperforms the conventional WR-based method and the nulling-based semi-blind method. By using MIMO linear prediction, the new WR-based algorithm utilizing the 8PF transmit scheme is then extended for time-domain MIMO-OFDM channel estimation. Computer simulations show that the proposed signal-perturbation-free LP-based semi-blind solution performs much better than the LP semi-blind method without using the proposed transmit scheme, the LS method as well as the nulling-based semi-blind method in terms of the MSE of the channel estimate.

Book excerpt: Designing spectral efficient, high-speed wireless links that offer high quality- of-service and range capability has been a critical research and engineering challenge. In this thesis, we mainly address the complexity and performance issues of channel estimation and data detection in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems over time-varying channels. We derive the probability density function (pdf) expressions of the condition number (i.e., the maximum-to-minimum-singular-value ratio, MMSVR) of the channel state information matrix of MIMO OFDM systems. It is shown that this ratio is directly related to the noise enhancement in open-loop systems and provides a significant insight on the system capacity. A decision-directed (DD) maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) channel estimation scheme of MIMO systems is derived. Error performance of a zero- forcing receiver with the DD MAP and perfect channel estimates is provided and compared. This scheme has a low complexity and can be applied to time-varying Rayleigh fading channels with an arbitrary spaced-time correlation function. We propose an iterative channel estimation and data detection scheme for MIMO OFDM systems in the presence of inter-carrier-interference (ICI) due to the nature of time-varying channels. An ICI-based minimum-mean-square error (MMSE) detection scheme is derived. An expectation-maximization (EM) based least square (LS) channel estimator is proposed to minimize the mean-square error (MSE) of the channel estimates and to reduce the complexity of the implementation. With the estimate of the channel and initially detected symbols, ICI is estimated and removed from the received signal. Thus more accurate estimation of the channel and data detection can be obtained in the next iteration. An EM-based MAP channel estimator is derived by exploiting the frequency/time correlation of the pilot and data sub-carriers. Performance comparison is made between the proposed schemes and the ideal case - time-invariant channels and perfect channel estimation. We optimize the data transmission by exploiting the long term correlation characteristics. The transmitted data is successively detected without an error floor in spatially correlated channels. The algorithms proposed in this thesis allow low-complexity implementation of channel estimation and data detection for MIMO OFDM systems over time-varying fading channels, while providing good error performance.

Book excerpt: Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is a method of digital modulation in which a signal is split into several narrowband channels at different frequencies. CDMA is a form of multiplexing, which allows numerous signals to occupy a single transmission channel, optimising the use of available bandwidth. Multiplexing is sending multiple signals or streams of information on a carrier at the same time in the form of a single, complex signal and then recovering the separate signals at the receiving end. Multi-Carrier (MC) CDMA is a combined technique of Direct Sequence (DS) CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) and OFDM techniques. It applies spreading sequences in the frequency domain. Wireless communications has witnessed a tremendous growth during the past decade and further spectacular enabling technology advances are expected in an effort to render ubiquitous wireless connectivity a reality. This technical in-depth book is unique in its detailed exposure of OFDM, MIMO-OFDM and MC-CDMA. A further attraction of the joint treatment of these topics is that it allows the reader to view their design trade-offs in a comparative context. Divided into three main parts: Part I provides a detailed exposure of OFDM designed for employment in various applications Part II is another design alternative applicable in the context of OFDM systems where the channel quality fluctuations observed are averaged out with the aid of frequency-domain spreading codes, which leads to the concept of MC-CDMA Part III discusses how to employ multiple antennas at the base station for the sake of supporting multiple users in the uplink Portrays the entire body of knowledge currently available on OFDM Provides the first complete treatment of OFDM, MIMO(Multiple Input Multiple Output)-OFDM and MC-CDMA Considers the benefits of channel coding and space time coding in the context of various application examples and features numerous complete system design examples Converts the lessons of Shannon’s information theory into design principles applicable to practical wireless systems Combines the benefits of a textbook with a research monograph where the depth of discussions progressively increase throughout the book This all-encompassing self-contained treatment will appeal to researchers, postgraduate students and academics, practising research and development engineers working for wireless communications and computer networking companies and senior undergraduate students and technical managers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last ten years have seen a massive growth in the number of connected wireless devices. Billions of devices are connected and managed by wireless networks. At the same time, each device needs a high throughput to support applications such as voice, real-time video, movies, and games. Demands for wireless throughput and the number of wireless devices will always increase. In addition, there is a growing concern about energy consumption of wireless communication systems. Thus, future wireless systems have to satisfy three main requirements: i) having a high throughput; ii) simultaneously serving many users; and iii) having less energy consumption. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology, where a base station (BS) equipped with very large number of antennas (collocated or distributed) serves many users in the same time-frequency resource, can meet the above requirements, and hence, it is a promising candidate technology for next generations of wireless systems. With massive antenna arrays at the BS, for most propagation environments, the channels become favorable, i.e., the channel vectors between the users and the BS are (nearly) pairwisely orthogonal, and hence, linear processing is nearly optimal. A huge throughput and energy efficiency can be achieved due to the multiplexing gain and the array gain. In particular, with a simple power control scheme, Massive MIMO can offer uniformly good service for all users. In this dissertation, we focus on the performance of Massive MIMO. The dissertation consists of two main parts: fundamentals and system designs of Massive MIMO. In the first part, we focus on fundamental limits of the system performance under practical constraints such as low complexity processing, limited length of each coherence interval, intercell interference, and finite-dimensional channels. We first study the potential for power savings of the Massive MIMO uplink with maximum-ratio combining (MRC), zero-forcing, and minimum mean-square error receivers, under perfect and imperfect channels. The energy and spectral efficiency tradeoff is investigated. Secondly, we consider a physical channel model where the angular domain is divided into a finite number of distinct directions. A lower bound on the capacity is derived, and the effect of pilot contamination in this finite-dimensional channel model is analyzed. Finally, some aspects of favorable propagation in Massive MIMO under Rayleigh fading and line-of-sight (LoS) channels are investigated. We show that both Rayleigh fading and LoS environments offer favorable propagation. In the second part, based on the fundamental analysis in the first part, we propose some system designs for Massive MIMO. The acquisition of channel state information (CSI) is very importantin Massive MIMO. Typically, the channels are estimated at the BS through uplink training. Owing to the limited length of the coherence interval, the system performance is limited by pilot contamination. To reduce the pilot contamination effect, we propose an eigenvalue-decomposition-based scheme to estimate the channel directly from the received data. The proposed scheme results in better performance compared with the conventional training schemes due to the reduced pilot contamination. Another important issue of CSI acquisition in Massive MIMO is how to acquire CSI at the users. To address this issue, we propose two channel estimation schemes at the users: i) a downlink "beamforming training" scheme, and ii) a method for blind estimation of the effective downlink channel gains. In both schemes, the channel estimation overhead is independent of the number of BS antennas. We also derive the optimal pilot and data powers as well as the training duration allocation to maximize the sum spectral efficiency of the Massive MIMO uplink with MRC receivers, for a given total energy budget spent in a coherence interval. Finally, applications of Massive MIMO in relay channels are proposed and analyzed. Specifically, we consider multipair relaying systems where many sources simultaneously communicate with many destinations in the same time-frequency resource with the help of a massive MIMO relay. A massive MIMO relay is equipped with many collocated or distributed antennas. We consider different duplexing modes (full-duplex and half-duplex) and different relaying protocols (amplify-and-forward, decode-and-forward, two-way relaying, and one-way relaying) at the relay. The potential benefits of massive MIMO technology in these relaying systems are explored in terms of spectral efficiency and power efficiency.

Book excerpt: This thesis is concerned with channel estimation and data detection of MIMO-OFDM communication systems using Space-Time Block Coding (STBC) and Space-Frequency Block Coding (SFBC) under frequency selective channels. A new iterative joint channel estimation and signal detection technique for both STBC-OFDM and SFBC-OFDM systems is proposed. The proposed algorithm is based on a processive sequence of events for space time and space frequency coding schemes where pilot subcarriers are used for channel estimation in the first time instant, and then in the second time instant, the estimated channel is used to decode the data symbols in the adjacent data subcarriers. Once data symbols are recovered, the system recursively performs a new channel estimation using the decoded data symbols as pilots. The iterative process is repeated until all MIMO-OFDM symbols are recovered. In addition, the proposed channel estimation technique is based on the maximum likelihood (ML) approach which offers linearity and simplicity of implementation. Due to the orthogonality of STBC and SFBC, high computation efficiency is achieved since the method does not require any matrix inversion for estimation and detection at the receiver. Another major novel contribution of the thesis is the proposal of a new group decoding method that reduces the processing time significantly via the use of sub-carrier grouping for transmitted data recovery. The OFDM symbols are divided into groups to which a set of pilot subcarriers are assigned and used to initiate the channel estimation process. Designated data symbols contained within each group of the OFDM symbols are decoded simultaneously in order to improve the decoding duration. Finally, a new mixed STBC and SFBC channel estimation and data detection technique with a joint iterative scheme and a group decoding method is proposed. In this technique, STBC and SFBC are used for pilot and data subcarriers alternatively, forming the different combinations of STBC/SFBC and SFBC/STBC. All channel estimation and data detection methods for different MIMO-OFDM systems proposed in the thesis have been simulated extensively in many different scenarios and their performances have been verified fully.
