Book Synopsis How to Change to a Nongraded School by : Madeline Hunter
Download or read book How to Change to a Nongraded School written by Madeline Hunter and published by ASCD. This book was released on 1992-06-15 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Madeline Hunter was a renowned authority on effective teaching. With more than 25 years' experience in leading a team-taught, nongraded school, the UCLA Laboratory School, she provided educators with practical ways to change a graded, K-6 elementary school into a nongraded one with multi-age classes at four levels: early childhood, lower elementary, middle elementary, and upper elementary. This book describes the critical attributes of a nongraded school: students' continuous progress toward clearly stated goals, team teaching, and multi-age grouping. In a nongraded school, teachers diagnose the intellectual, social, physical, and emotional needs of students; assess their levels of skills and knowledge; and determine which teaching style and peer grouping is most appropriate for each student. The instructional program of a nongraded school includes interdisciplinary education, team teaching, long-term developmental objectives for each student, independent study or creative projects, performance-based assessment, and cooperative learning. Essential to the change process is continuing staff development, planning time for teachers, and preparation and involvement of parents. The author discusses creative ways to find time, intrigue the parents, and challenge the teachers. One chapter describes the goal of a nongraded school (or any excellent school): teaching to achieve independent learners. The last chapter is a case study of the change process at work at the UCLA Laboratory School. Note: This product listing is for the reflowable (ePub) version of the book.

Book Synopsis Guiding School Improvement with Action Research by : Richard Sagor
Download or read book Guiding School Improvement with Action Research written by Richard Sagor and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2000-05-15 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Action research, explored in this book, is a seven-step process for improving teaching and learning in classrooms at all levels. Through practical examples, research tools, and easy-to-follow "implementation strategies," Richard Sagor guides readers through the process from start to finish. Learn how to uncover and use the data that already exist in your classrooms and schools to answer significant questions about your individual or collective concerns and interests. Sagor covers each step in the action research process in detail: selecting a focus, clarifying theories, identifying research questions, collecting data, analyzing data, reporting results, and taking informed action. Drawing from the experience of individual teachers, faculties, and school districts, Sagor describes how action research can enhance teachers' professional standing and efficacy while helping them succeed in settings characterized by increasingly diverse student populations and an emphasis on standards-based reform. The book also demonstrates how administrators and policymakers can use action research to bolster efforts related to accreditation, teacher supervision, and job-embedded staff development. Part how-to guide, part inspirational treatise, Guiding School Improvement with Action Research provides advice, information, and encouragement to anyone interested in reinventing schools as learning communities and restructuring teaching as the true profession it was meant to be.
Book Synopsis Changing the School Learning Environment by : Jack Rimmel Frymier
Download or read book Changing the School Learning Environment written by Jack Rimmel Frymier and published by R&L Education. This book was released on 2004 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The No Child Left Behind Legislation by the federal government led to another round of emphasis on public schools, resulting in a focus on "school renewal" or, as often termed, "school reform". The National Association of Secondary School Principals in the 1960s initiated a concept for school renewal called "The Model Schools Project" (1969-1974). The MSP was the culmination of much of the seminal thinking on school renewal of that era. The project was directed by Dr. J. Lloyd Trump, NASSP secretary for research and development, and Dr. William D. Georgiades, professor of Education at the University of Southern California. After the MSP formally ended, Georgiades continued to provide leadership for school renewal as president of a follow-up consortium of schools and districts, the Learning Environments Consortium International. In Changing the School Learning Environment, Jack Frymier and Ronald Joekel take a look at the key concepts of the Model Schools Project and what has transpired during the past 30 plus years. Has it survived as initially conceived, evolved into something meaningful for contemporary schools, or failed as so many other innovations have done? A survey of best educational practices stemming from the Model Schools Project that promote school renewal and how they are being utilized today are also presented and discussed. Should appeal to educators and secondary school administrators.
Book Synopsis Leadership for Change and School Reform by : Kathryn Riley
Download or read book Leadership for Change and School Reform written by Kathryn Riley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School reform is a top priority for governments today. This timely and challenging book, edited by leading international researchers, Kathryn Riley and Karen Seashore Louis, offers a rich comparative perspective on leadership for change and school reform. Contributors form North America, Europe and Australia demonstrate how school leadership is influenced by global pressures, differing national and state contexts and local concerns. They illustrate the limitations of reform initiatives which focus on school leaders tot he exclusion of the many other organisations which affect school, such as national and local governments, professional associations and school communities. This book raises some important questions such as: *How can school leaders create intelligent, thinking schools? *How can leadership and learning be linked together? *What are the characteristics of effective local education authorities and school districts? *What is the role of teacher organisations in educational reform and change? *What happens if businesses, teachers, parents and local communities have different views of what makes a good school? The text illustrates the ways in which leadership is rooted in learning, and identifies new directions for school leadership. It challenges conventional notions of leadership, offering an expanded view, which sees leadership just as an individual role-based function, but as a network of relationships among people, structures and cultures. This lively and provocative book should be read by all those interested in education reform.
