Book excerpt: The complex relationship between sociopolitical complexity, natural climatic change, and subsistence strategies on California’s Northern Channel Islands (NCI) has long been a topic of archaeological inquiry. One period of particular interest to NCI researchers is the Middle-to-Late Transition Period (MLT, 800-650 cal BP), during which Chumash hierarchical sociopolitical organization is thought to have solidified. Multiple models of sociopolitical change have been proposed, all of which acknowledge the relationship between rising populations, shifting dietary patterns, climatic events, and sociopolitical structure. Due to data gaps and the history of archaeological research on the Channel Islands, however, these models rely on dietary data from MLT and Late Period (650 cal BP to AD 1542) archaeological sites on Santa Cruz Island, but lack critical data from the Middle Period to contextualize subsistence shifts. Through my thesis research, I present and interpret dietary data from two well-dated Middle Period sites on Santa Cruz Island through a historical ecological framework to place dietary shifts in spatial and temporal context and to aid in a deeper understanding of Chumash lifeways during a very dynamic time on the NCI.

This research aims to highlight the central role of fiber production in the early maritime societies of Baja California by exploring the lithic tool technologies of Isla Cedros. Quantitative analysis methods are applied to artifact catalogs containing archaeological data from three of the earliest occupation sites on Isla Cedros. This study focuses on the use of fiber by examining the technological traditions of the lithic tools of Terminal Pleistocene/Early Holocene Isla Cedros. The importance of fiber in this adaptation is brought to the fore by the heavy presence of unifacial tools that represent the diagnostic technological markers for fiber processing, illustrating the essential role it played in maritime subsistence practices and craft specialization during the initial occupation of Isla Cedros. Putting fiber at the center of archaeological inquiry helps close the gap between the fishhooks and the person who fished; it helps bridge the gap between variety of fish species we find in the archaeological record and the people who worked together to gather them and who ate them. Archaeological data from the Terminal Pleistocene/Early Holocene occupation of Isla Cedros shows an archaeological pattern indicative of a well-established technological organization focused on marine resources and fiber production. This suggests that the focus on marine resources is not the result of an adaptation driven by lack of terrestrial resources, but rather an ever-present maritime culture. The archaeological record of Cedros Island is vast and rich, offering incredible opportunities for methodological approaches helping us tell a more holistic and inclusive story of the first Americans.

Until recently, however, archaeologists believed that marine economies did not develop until the end of the Pleistocene, when the archaeological record begins to have evidence of marine life as part of the human diet. This has long been interpreted as a postglacial adaptation, due to the rise in sea level and subsequent decrease in terrestrial resources. Coastal resources, particularly mollusks, were viewed as fallback resources, which people resorted to only when terrestrial resources were scarce, included only as part of a more complex diet. Recent research has significantly altered this understanding, known as the Broad Spectrum Revolution (BSR) model. The contributions to this volume revise the BSR model, with evidence that coastal resources were an important part of human economies and subsistence much earlier than previously thought, and even the main focus of diets for some Pleistocene and early Holocene hunter-gatherer societies. With evidence from North and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia, this volume comprehensively lends a new understanding to coastal settlement from the Middle Paleolithic to the Middle Holocene.

Book excerpt: Sediments from the crater lake on Isla Isabela, in the southern Gulf of California, were used to investigate precipitation and evaporation changes in this region over the past 6,000 years. Stable isotopes of oxygen and carbon provided a proxy record of Pacific climate variability on timescales ranging from decadal to millennial. Strength in the dominant periodicities of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation appears to have been intermittent over the past two millennia, suggesting changes in Pacific forcing not previously recognized. In addition, productivity in the lake varies on timescales that suggests a link between increased productivity and solar maxima. Although the precise role of solar activity on climate variations remains unclear, this data represents a convergence of model output with empirical evidence over the past millennium. Over the late Holocene, it appears that there have been a number of pronounced dry periods that generally coincide with cold sea surface temperatures in the eastern Pacific, and generally dry conditions across western North America.

Book excerpt: Zooarchaeological analysis of sites EeRb 77 and EeRb 140 on Tk'emlúps te Secwépemcúlecw [Tk'emlúps traditional territory], in Kamloops in the Interior Plateau, British Columbia was conducted. The study contributes to a larger project documenting the long-term land use by the Secwépemc. A quantification system that predicts number of specimens based on weight was developed to accommodate the highly fragmented assemblages. The results from EeRb 77 and 140 were compared with 11 selected assemblages from the Kamloops, Ashcroft, and Lillooet localities, and with the Interior Plateau subsistence pattern. The EeRb 77 assemblage contains large amounts of salmon and deer, whereas carp/minnow and bighorn sheep are more common at EeRb 140. High value, low survival potential artiodactyl skeletal parts are under-represented at both sites. Fish were harvested more intensively during the Kamloops horizon/historic period at EeRb 77 than they were at other sites in the region with comparable dated components. The EeRb 140 assemblage is too mixed to view change in subsistence practices through time. The results of this study contribute to refining the Interior Plateau subsistence pattern.

Native populations were decimated by disease, and their lives were altered through forced assimilation and the cessation of traditional foraging practices. Overgrazing, overfishing, and the introduction of nonnative species depleted natural resources severely. Most scientists have assumed the islands were also relatively marginal for human habitation before European contact, but An Archaeology of Abundance reassesses this long-held belief, analyzing new lines of evidence suggesting that the California islands were rich in resources important to human populations. Contributors examine data from Paleocoastal to historic times that suggest the islands were optimal habitats that provided a variety of foods, fresh water, minerals, and fuels for the people living there. Botanical remains from these sites, together with the modern resurgence of plant communities after the removal of livestock, challenge theories that plant foods had to be imported for survival. Geoarchaeological surveys show that the islands had a variety of materials for making stone tools, and zooarchaeological data show that marine resources were abundant and that the translocation of plants and animals from the mainland further enhanced an already rich resource base. Studies of extensive exchange, underwater forests of edible seaweeds, and high island population densities also support the case for abundance on the islands. Concluding that the California islands were not marginal environments for early humans, the discoveries presented in this volume hold significant implications for reassessing the ancient history of islands around the world that have undergone similar ecological transformations.
