Scott brings readers an emotionally charged memoir that begins with a single act of family violence that forever changed a young boy. Resulting in the incarceration of one parent, the event left him scarred-both physically and emotionally-for life.Set against a backdrop of both the rural South, and the City of Brotherly Love, Scott shares the tragedy that rocked his family to the core, and his subsequent journey to overcome the betrayal.Readers will experience his journey alongside him as he travels all over the country and across continents, searching for answers, working to overcome the tragedy and its resultant trauma. From a childhood spent growing up in the North and the South to the halls of a historically black university to military life, readers will discover just what it took for Scott to deal with the damage and pain from the evil that lurked within his own family. This is the story of James J. Scott-the boy he was, and the man he became-and the incredible, triumphant life he achieved that stands as proof of the human spirit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I came into this world Sean John Marshall. I am twenty-seven years old, and was born and raised in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I am a fine artist, author, a proud father of one beautiful baby girl, and an all-around entrepreneur. But all of my pursuits came to an abrupt halt when I was consumed by a life of crime. For so long I became a part of a problem. Growing up in and around the streets, I’ve caused much destruction in my lifetime. I’ve been a part of gang violence, sold drugs, and was involved in countless thefts and armed robberies. Now my life’s focus is to inspire, teach, uplift and mend. I now use life’s experiences to grow and learn. I feel obligated to pass on all the insight and knowledge I’ve obtained throughout the years to whoever I can. By doing so, people can learn from my mistakes and use me as an example, because I’ve seen darker truths that people need not witness themselves. I’ve walked rocky paths on which those can only stumble. And if by sharing my views on paper and pouring my heart out through a pen can inspire or save just one life, if by writing I can prevent someone from making some of the same mistakes I’ve made, I will have done my part. I will have at least saved one soul from having to suffer the afflictions I’ve faced. And for that reason alone, I write. And for that reason alone, I’ll forever share my truths.

Book excerpt: Scientists have emphasized the innate, genetically based nature of our fascination with the human face and its almost limitless expressive capacity, all of which is represented in the art of the last six centuries. But little attention has been paid to the anomoly of the vacuous expressions of earlier facial representations. Brener attributes this change to a change in the functioning of the human brain, as well as the role of cultural factors. It is the evolution of both genes and culture that has resulted in a marked increase in the human ability to create and interpret facial expressions. The result of this has impacted human behavior.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judy, a biologist, wildlife researcher and wildlife rehabilitator along with her husband Bob, a biologist and Montana game warden (now retired), began observing new birth defects and health issues in mammals and birds in western Montana the spring of 1995. This book chronicles over 20 years of observations regarding the changes in the faces and the vital organs of vertebrate newborns now being observed throughout North America. Included is discussion of how people and other animals, plants, and the entire biodiversity of our planet are being dangerously affected by a combination of factors, one being recent excessive use of specific herbicides, fungicides and insecticides. What we can do to mitigate these devastating changes is addressed in the sincere hope that positive action will be taken before it is too late. Mass extinctions are already occurring as a result of the changes humans are causing to the face of the planet. This book is somewhat like "Silent Spring" by Rachel Carson, but is not as technical and has lots of photos to illustrate the birth defects and health issues, along with stories of individual animals. In the process of rehabilitating wildlife, Judy discovered how to correct certain defects such as underdeveloped bones, particularly those facial bones which result in underbite and overbite, allowing normal growth. She also discovered how to mitigate certain other health issues such as how to heal broken bones in mammals and birds in about half the usual time. The stories of the individual animals, which prompted her discoveries, are in this book in the hope that others can also be helped.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to most migration studies that focus on specific “foreigner” groups in Germany, this study simultaneously compares and contrasts the legal, political, social, and economic opportunity structures facing diverse categories of the ethnic minorities who have settled in the country since the 1950s. It reveals the contradictory, and usually self-defeating, nature of German policies intended to keep “migrants” out—allegedly in order to preserve a German Leitkultur (with which very few of its own citizens still identify). The main barriers to effective integration—and socioeconomic revitalization in general—sooner lie in the country’s obsolete labor market regulations and bureaucratic procedures. Drawing on local case studies, personal interviews, and national surveys, the author describes “the human faces” behind official citizenship and integration practices in Germany, and in doing so demonstrates that average citizens are much more multi-cultural than they realize.

A painting or drawing that is flipped, flopped or stared at long enough can somehow be transformed from one image to another. In this engaging collection of paintings, drawings, cartoons, masks, toys and other work, there are optical illusions from the Renaissance, Enlightenment-era political cartoons and Victorian toys that start off as one thing and end up as another. Sometimes these mutations were made for fun, sometimes for profit or to score a political point, but the results are always an intriguing pleasure to view.Even the most jaded readers will find their frowns turned upside down after they pick up this delightful volume.
