This book was released on 2008 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonmetropolitan America has undergone significant changes over the past quarter of a century. From the population turnaround in the 1970s, to population decline in the 1980s, to population rebound in the 1990s, nonmetro counties have seen fluctuations in population and economic growth. Historically, nonmetropolitan America has been dependent on single sustenance activities such as farming, mining, and manufacturing which increases the instability of these counties. Less diversified than metropolitan areas, nonmetro areas have more strongly felt the effects of deindustrialization and globalization. While population change and economic growth and decline related to farming, mining, manufacturing, and increased service sector employment has been addressed both in metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas, less research has addressed the role of government in regional processes in nonmetropolitan communities. This study intends to contribute to the study of regional processes in nonmetropolitan America by looking at the effects of public sustenance structures (such as federal employment concentration) on measures of economic growth and development in nonmetro counties between 1990 and 2000.

Book Synopsis Post-Cowboy Economics by : Thomas Michael Power
Download or read book Post-Cowboy Economics written by Thomas Michael Power and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2001-07 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great deal of reactionary political fire in the Mountain West has been aimed at environmental protection measures that are perceived to have destroyed or diminished the livelihoods of long-time residents. Conventional wisdom sees the economic woes afflicting the region -- declining pay, growing inequality, persistent poverty -- as a direct result of increasingly strict environmental regulations that have crippled natural resource industries such as mining and logging. In Post-Cowboy Economics, economists Thomas Michael Power and Richard Barrett provide a new interpretation of the economy of the Mountain West. Based on evidence from a wide variety of sources, including data on individual employment and income histories of more than 300,000 residents, they clearly demonstrate that the region's economic misfortunes are not the result of changes in regional industrial structure but rather are local manifestations of pervasive national and international trends. The authors: discuss and critique entrenched conventional wisdom and its policy implications present an empirical analysis of changes in the region offer a new interpretation of events affecting the regional economy set forth public policies that will work to protect and enhance the economic well-being of its residents and communitiesThe authors' analysis and interpretation make a compelling case that despite incomes that are low compared to the rest of the country, the region is not suffering from general impoverishment, and that environmental protection, rather than threatening economic well-being, enhances welfare and protects the very source of the economic vitality that the Mountain West enjoys. Throughout, they argue that fearful, crisis driven environmental and economic development policies are unnecessary and inappropriate, and often counterproductive.Post-Cowboy Economics is an important work for professionals and scholars involved with environmental policy, economic development, and resource management, as well as anyone interested in the future of the American West."
Book Synopsis Community Economic Vitality by : Gene F. Summers
Download or read book Community Economic Vitality written by Gene F. Summers and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended for rural development practitioners and extension educators, this publication examines trends and issues in the revitalization of rural America. Chapter 1 defines community economic vitality as the capacity to ensure a flow of jobs and income over time; focuses attention on the realities of competition between communities and the essential role of state government; and argues that vitality requires equal attention to supply, demand, and institutional factors. Chapters 2-5: (1) describe the links between agriculture and other rural economic areas; (2) assess the outcomes of 25 years of rural industrialization; (3) discuss the effects of global economic restructuring on rural industrialization; and (4) document the recent growth of service industries in rural areas. Chapters 6-10: (1) question the utility of right-to-work legislation as a strategy of rural job creation; (2) support the argument that passive income (cash transfers and investment earnings) is an efficient instrument for economic development; (3) relate transfer payments to rising local wages in the 1960's but not the 1970's; (4) associate regional convergence of educational levels with convergence of southern and nonsouthern poverty rates; and (5) outline the distribution within the rural community of income gains in the 1960's and 1970's. Authors include: Gene F. Summers, Leonard E. Bloomquist, Thomas A. Hirschl, Ron E. Shaffer, Francine Horton, Glen C. Pulver, Priscilla Salant, and William Saupe. This document contains 82 references and 12 figures and tables. (SV)
Book Synopsis Income and Inequality by : Cathy Kassab
Download or read book Income and Inequality written by Cathy Kassab and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1992-06-23 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is becoming an information-based, service economy with fewer middle-income jobs than in an industrial economy. How does increasing service sector employment affect community income and thus social well-being? This well-documented study assesses the impact of changing levels of employment in the service and manufacturing sectors on the level and distribution of community income. The study includes both analyses of low-wage and high-wage service and manufacturing sectors and analyses of major segments of the service sector, including business services and retail trade. Measures of social well-being include changes in community aggregate income, aggregate wages and salaries, distribution of income within the community, and the community's position in the regional hierarchy. Particular attention is given to differences in impact on rural and urban communities. The book will be of interest to those concerned with rural economic development and issues related to inequality and economic and industrial change.
