Book Synopsis Three Decades of Change in an Old-growth Mixed-mesophytic Forest by : Shannon L. Galbraith

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lilley Cornett Woods is an old-growth mixed mesophytic forest (~104 ha) on the Cumberland Plateau in Letcher County, Kentucky. Overstory and understory trees were surveyed in permanent plots in 1971, 1981, 1991, and 1999. Objectives of this 1999 study included (1) an assessment of tree species and community composition, (2) documentation of any significant changes in species and vegetation, and (3) a comparison of vegetation and species trends among other eastern forests. Similar to other old-growth forests, overstory density (284 to 347 trees/ha) and basal area (26.4 to 29.9 m2/ha) have significantly increased from 1971 to 1999. However, the net growth is contrary to some Southern Appalachian studies, which have raised concern over increased mortality since the 1970s. At Lilley Cornett Woods, the total number of species has remained relatively stable; 43 recorded in 1971 and 39 in 1999. Reduction in species number can be attributed to death of single individuals or misidentification. Six species (Fagus grandifolila, Tsuga candensis, Acer rubrum, Quercus alba, Acer saccharum, Quercus prinus) have comprised over 60% of total overstory importance values in the forest since 1971; Fagus grandifolia has remained the most important species. Though the overstory composition in 1999 was 85% similar to 1971, some species shifts have occurred over the 28-year period, such as, increases in importance of red and sugar maple and eastern hemlock and decreases in white, scarlet, and northern red oaks. This trend of increasing importance of shade-tolerant mesophytes with a decrease in oaks is consistent with other reports in the Southern Appalachians. These changes at LCW are primarily attributed to treefall gap number, size, and frequency, continued fire supression, the natural replacement of American chestnut, and periodic drought.

This book was released on 2005-03-30 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plant fossil record indicates that the genus Metasequoia was widely distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere from the early Late Cretaceous to the Plio-Pleistocene. Today the genus has shrunk to one species with approximately 5,000 mature individuals in southeastern China’s Xiahoe Valley. This book distills the current understanding of the biology, ecology and physiology of fossil and living Metasequoia, current research directions and problems that remain unresolved.

Book Synopsis Chance and Change by : William Holland Drury Jr.
Download or read book Chance and Change written by William Holland Drury Jr. and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The result of a lifetime in the field and in the classroom, Chance and Change challenges many of the tenets of establishment ecology. Charging that most of the environmental movement has ignored or rejected the changes in thinking that have infiltrated ecological theory since the mid 70s, William Drury presents a convincing case that disorder is what makes the natural world work, and that clinging to romantic notions of nature's grand design only saps the strength of the conservation movement. Drury's training in botany, geology, and zoology as well as his life-long devotion to work in the field gave him a depth and range of knowledge that few ecologists possess. This book opens our eyes to a new way of looking at the environment and forces us to think more deeply about nature and our role in it. Chance and Change is intended for the serious amateur naturalist or professional conservationist. Drury argues that chance and change are the rule, that the future is as unpredictable to other organisms as it is to us, and that natural disturbance is too frequent for equilibrium models to be useful. He stresses the centrality of natural selection in explaining the meaning of biology and insists the book and the laboratory must be checked at all times against the real world. Written in an easy, personal style, Drury's narrative comes alive with the landscape—the salt marshes, dunes, seashores, and forests—that he believed served as the best classroom. His novel approach of correlating landscape evolution with ecological principles offers a welcome corrective to discordance between what we observe in nature and what theory tells us we should see.

Download or read book Tree by Tree written by Scott J. Meiners and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2023-09-15 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tree by Tree is a warning and a toolkit for the future of forest recovery. Scott J. Meiners investigates the critical biological threats endangering tree species native to the forests of eastern North America, providing a needed focus on this plight. Meiners suggests that if we are to save our forests, the first step is to recognize the threats in front of us. Meiners focuses on five familiar trees—the American elm, the American chestnut, the eastern hemlock, the white ash, and the sugar maple—and shares why they matter economically, ecologically, and culturally. From outbreaks of Dutch elm disease to infestations of emerald ash borers, Meiners highlights the challenges that have led or will lead to the disappearance of these trees from forests. In doing so, he shows us how diversity loss often disrupts intricately balanced ecosystems and how vital it is that we pay more attention to massive changes in forest composition. With practical steps for the conservation of native tree species, Tree by Tree offers the inspiration and insights we need to begin saving our forests.
