Book excerpt: The first volume of Benjamin Studies publishes the keynote lectures of the first Congress of the International Walter Benjamin Association, which took place in Amsterdam, July 1997. Its title bears witness to the most central concepts of Benjamin's philosophy of culture. Strongly influenced as he was by Kant, Benjamin never lost his inclination to analyse the components of reality as fashioned by ourselves. Because he was also a materialist, for him the modes of fashioning were shaped in turn by the times and places we occupy in history. As a consequence, Benjamin's theory assigns a pivotal role in the interaction between the world and its inhabitants to the media: language with its plethora of discourses, the arts, and the whole technology of reproduction. The historical and social development of the media is, translated, according to him, into our instruments of perception, and this perception constructs the elements of the world, the knowledge of this construction and the knowledge of the constructor. The self-knowledge of the constructor is what we call 'experience'. Within this broad epistemological framework, the diversity and complexity of Benjamin's project acquires a fundamental coherence and is therefore able to accommodate the temporal volatility of the phenomena of our world. It's not surprising, therefore, that Perception & Experience offers the most stimulating variety of topics, and that the keynote lectures reflect merely an intensification of interest in certain areas within a much larger field of investigation. The texts presented here pinpoint the central preoccupations of today's debates amongst Benjamin scholars, preoccupations which are themselves responses to our own historical imperatives.

Taking as its corpus all sub-Saharan Francophone African texts that have ever been published in English, this book explores the ways in which translators approach innovative features such as African-language borrowings, neologisms and other deliberate manipulations of French, depictions of sociolinguistic variation, and a variety of types of wordplay. The implications of their translation decisions are drawn out with reference to the broader significances that are often accorded to postcolonial literature, and earlier critics' calls for a decolonized translation practice are explored from both a practical and theoretical angle. These findings are used to push towards a detailed investigation of the postcolonial turn in translation studies, drawing on the work of key postcolonial theorists such has Homi K. Bhabha and Gayatri Spivak. This is a timely and incisive critical assessment of contemporary discourses on the ethics and politics of translation.

L’analyse vise à expliquer comment des politiques d’enseignement des langues relativement similaires en termes d’objectifs et de moyens mis en œuvre produisent des résultats significativement différents dans deux cas a priori très proches que sont la France et l’Allemagne. Retraçant le processus d’institutionnalisation de ces politiques sur le temps long, la démonstration montre que ces différences ne s’expliquent que partiellement par des dynamiques infra-sectorielles. L’explication des variations d’output et d’outcome de la politique d’enseignement des langues étrangères nécessite de prendre en compte la configuration politique et sociétale dans son ensemble à travers une perspective systémique : le découpage sectoriel ou intersectoriel de l’objectif du multilinguisme et les effets d’interaction entre la politique d’enseignement des langues et d’autres secteurs de politique publique expliquent des variations dans la perception d’utilité des langues par les individus et leur motivation de s’investir dans l’apprentissage de ces dernières, et partant les différences de résultat de cette politique. L’absence de lien direct entre inputs, outputs et outcomes de la politique d’enseignement des langues soulève la question des limites de l’action publique en matière de gouvernement des langues, limites qui sont liées à la réactivité de l’Etat à des préférences contradictoires des citoyens et au lien entre langue et citoyenneté dans les sociétés monolingues.
