This book was released on 2004 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government has announced its intention to merge the Inland Revenue and HM Customs and Excise departments into a single department, to be called HM Revenue and Customs, in line with the recommendations of the O'Donnell report ('Financing Britain's future: review of the Revenue departments, Cm 6163; ISBN 0101616325) published in March 2004. The Committee's report examines the case for merger; expected costs and benefits; risks; legislation: confidentiality and powers of the new department; tax policy-making; and ministerial accountability. The Committee supports the decision in principle and looks forward to a detailed analysis of expected costs and benefits being carried out as soon as practicable, and also supports the introduction of new accountability arrangements. However, the fact that the Executive Chairman will report to three Treasury Ministers on various aspects of the new department's work appears unnecessarily cumbersome, and recommends that this should be reviewed in light of practice once the new department has been created.

Book excerpt: Despite the plethora of books on change, there appears is a notable gap in the field; rarely is the authentic and candid voice of change practitioners heard. Seldom are those most closely involved in the management of change given (or seek) the opportunity to write about their personal experiences and reflexiveness. Nor is this just a case of practicing managers not being given a voice, or feeling that they cannot be frank and open about what they do. How often do academics candidly state what they actually do when they are faced with managing change in their own institutions or when they are called on in a consultancy capacity? Similarly, it is rare for full-time consultants to be candid about what it is they actually do: instead they tend to have a well-honed sales pitch which lays out a logical change process directed at helping the client to achieve success. Yet, when academics, consultants and practicing managers are prepared to speak candidly about what they really do, a richer, messier but more illuminating picture of change emerges. The aim of Perspectives on Change is to move beyond the ‘do as I say’ approach of most change books and to encourage academics, consultants and managers to say candidly what it is they really do and what they really think about change and how it should be managed. The Editors of this book, Burnes and Randall, have over 60 years of experience between them of studying and teaching change management, acting as consultants and actually managing change projects. They are, therefore, well aware of the differences and contradictions between what academics, consultants and managers say about change in public and what they say in private and do in practice. Perspectives on Change will offer students and practitioners of change a unique opportunity to understand change in practice. In addition, it will also contribute to the Rigour-Relevance debate by giving a different and perhaps more realistic perspective on the nature of the gap between theory and practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite two decades of investment in project management as many as 80 per cent of business change and IT projects continue to rack up cost overruns and fail to deliver their expected benefits. Business people who must have more certainty in their project investments will find this book refreshing. It contains commonsense but groundbreaking techniques that deal with just this challenge. The authors, far from rejecting current methods, take an imaginative approach to encapsulating established best practices such as PRINCE2â,,¢ within a framework of new thinking, innovative techniques and hard-nosed portfolio management. This book shows how project sponsors can radically improve the certainty of getting the benefits that they want and accelerate their projects to get them sooner rather than later (or never). Finance and portfolio managers will find techniques that provide them with the means for drilling down and tracking not only the costs, but also the cash values of project benefits, both tangible and intangible. Business people and project managers will find ideas here that enable them to create and control change in communities of stakeholders; which is the ultimate aim of the organizations that are investing time, resources and money in projects of this kind. Accelerating Business and IT Change is essential reading for anyone seeking to define the nature and value of what they expect from their projects, set realistic implementation schedules and then ensure that all the intended benefits are realized. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic and social progress in Solomon Islands has been limited since the country’s independence, and the recent global economic crisis has placed more pressure on the country’s economy. The resulting fiscal crunch and emerging balance-of-payments pressures demand a coordinated macroeconomic policy response, featuring recurrent expenditure restraint, prudent monetary policy, and public sector reform. Grant-funded infrastructure will also need to play a key role in supporting economic and employment growth. Finally, because the country is a high-cost, risky place in which to do business, the government must focus on removing constraints to private sector growth. This report outlines these recommendations for the medium- to long-term economic growth of Solomon Islands.

This book explains, from the point of view of the practitioner, the analysis of investment risk - a proper account of adequate risk management strategies - and offers an objective and readable account of the most common investment risk management procedures. It will not be highly mathematical, although mathematical formulae and technical graphs will be used where necessary, and will not rely on excessive technical jargon. The author also covers guidelines of regulatory institutions that protect the market and the investor: Bank of International Settlements, US SEC and UK FSA.
