Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the burst of the “economic bubble” in the 1990s, many Japanese companies were required to reform their management systems. Changes in corporate governance were widely discussed during that decade in studies on “Japanese management.” These discussions have resulted in little progress, however, since Americanization became the dominant discourse concerning governance and the management system. There have been few studies conducted from an academic point of view on the internal aspects of organizations that practice traditional Japanese management theory. This book examines how, and the degree to which, the development of market principles accompanying the advances of globalization has affected the traditional Japanese system. It focuses on four aspects of corporate management: management institutions, strategy, organization, and human resource management. The aggregation of the new management system in Japanese companies is regarded as a distinctive Japanese-style system of management. With emphasis on these four aspects, research was conducted on the basic structure of that system, following changes in the market, technology, and society. Further, specific functions of the basic structure of the Japanese-style management system were studied. Those findings are included here, along with a discussion and analysis of the direction of future changes.

This book, based on extensive original research, considers both the opportunities and problems of the transfer of Japanese management practices to other areas in East Asia. It remains one of the few books of its kind, as other books on Japanese management have concentrated on its transferability to the West. Because many Japanese subsidiaries have been established longer in East Asia than elsewhere and the local work forces have become accustomed to Japanese management practices when transferred elsewhere have become apparent in a way they have not where Japanese management practices are much newer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last two decades, Japanese firms have challenged U.S. dominance in many manufacturing industries. This challenge has increasingly come in the form of transplant operations, and recognition has spread that their success owes a great deal to superior manufacturing management. Despite the ups and downs of the business cycle in Japan, there remains a core of world-class Japanese companies that have developed manufacturing management systems that companies throughout the world strive to emulate. In this edited volume, a team of eminent scholars uses case studies and large-scale surveys to explain in depth the process of transferring and transforming the best Japanese Management Systems (JMS) by both Japanese- and U.S.-owned firms. While the most successful of the Japanese manufacturing transplants rely, to varying degrees, on home country management techniques, they have had to adapt them to fit U.S. conditions. Similarly, the growing number of U.S. firms that are adopting these techniques to strengthen their own positions face a considerable challenge in transforming them to fit local conditions. A new environment necessarily compels the transformation of JMS. But despite the hurdles firms face, the evidence presented here and elsewhere strongly indicates that key aspects of JMS are remarkably transferable and successful in the United States. Combining scientific data with clear and engaging prose,Remade in America is a rich analytical resource for manufacturing professionals, as well as scholars and students of management and business.

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, , language: English, abstract: Japanese Management Techniques Alzadjali, B. (2009) 2 - 10 There is no doubt that every person from all walks of life is indeed using a Japanese product or technology in his daily life, whether it is cars, pens or paper. Indeed, Japan provided the world with many successful global companies and brands such as Sony, Fujitsu, HP and Toyota. These global Japanese brands did not only affect Japanese economy, it also affected the world economy and trade. These industrial revolutions put Japan on one of the six big industrial countries alongside the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France and Italy. It is not the manufacturing elements that made Japan reach that, but there is also a great management system. The success of their approaches was not by adopting a fixed accounting system or by Activity-based costing ABC, but by using systematic flexible systems (Patel and Russell 1994, pp.64-65). In the last 50 years, Japan brought to the world a successful management style starting with a government model in the early 1950s, to a corporate model in the 1980s (Porter et al. 2002; Whitehill 1991). The root of the modern Japanese management goes back to post Second World War, when Japan started its economic recovery. Japan started a phenomenal revolution management system (Porter et al. 2002; Whitehill 1991). Towards the 1970s, research showed that the United States and some European countries used a similar system (Hayashi 2002). In 1980s the time came to challenge just how these systems would work out under the Japanese corporate management systems. Professor William Ouchi's book, about the Japanese management system entitled Theory Z: how American business can meet the Japanese challenge (England 1983; Hayashi 2002). The book became a standard management system practice in the United States for more than 20 years. During the last century, there were many theories which appeared on the table based on Japanese model from theory X to Z. However, the American companies did not found any productivity value on this model system and the theory Z management application became unlikely used among American companies and businessmen (England 1983; Whitehill 1991; Jeremiah J, 1992) perhaps because of differences in the environment or the culture. However, the Japanese culture has played an important role in the Japanese management system. In fact, the Japanese firm management system was based on two functions; columns economy and culture.

From advice on how to avoid cultural misunderstandings and how to develop trust with Japanese colleagues, readers will gain insights on how to communicate, negotiate, entertain, and socialize with Japanese as well as the minutiae of correct behavior. Using linguistic examples to facilitate how Japanese themselves view their work environment, authors Isao Takei and Jon P. Alston describe the social etiquette and protocols Japanese expect all foreigners to adopt in order to successfully conduct business. With a glossary of terms and practical real-life experiences, this is an essential guide for anyone who wants to forge deeper business relationships with Japanese.
