Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chambers of the Soul The following addresses were delivered at the Quiet Hour services in the Cincinnati Convention of the Young People's Society of Christian Endeavor. They were de signed to be'plain and simple index-fingers, suggesting what might prove a profitable line of meditation. To me those morning hours were seasons of refreshing. If these addresses were made a blessing to any soul, the praise thereof belongs to God. If in their printed form they shall be further owned of the Holy Spirit in helping the lives of any of my fellow laborers, the glory shall still be unto Him from whom cometh all good. My prayer for all my young friends is that their whole spirit, soul, and body may be preserved blameless unto the coming of the Lord. Whate'er else there may be, if this has come and welled through life and filled all the passing chambers of the years as men and women dwell down the decades and passed from youth to strength and strength to lessening years to every man and woman the one arching fact which shelters earth's stay and crowns it, lies in the experience common to all, shared by all, and known to all. All else passes. The fashion of this world changes. But these things remain. They quicken sympathy through mill ions and touch the tides of a common nature because these alone are real, lasting and eter nal. Barren is the life and hopeless the fate that shuts them out and knows them not. Empty are the years which have won success, measure it as men may, and have not this - The Press. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inner Door Mrs. Chambers was beginning to accept him with a certain helpless sense of having done what she could to prevent it. Had Sylvia been plain, and she was not, had she been poor instead of having a hundred thousand a year, her guardian's wife would have embraced him as a benignant demigod. But the factory, potent in its profits, hung like a black diamond on the girl's white neck, and its mechanical marvels demanded recognition even at the altar. That Kenneth was the son of his father, spoke for much, but the heir of a broker, thought Mrs. Chambers, stood in line for a questionable legacy. She loathed manufacturing, but she was terrified at the stock market; and manufacturing, after all, did the trick. In her own domain Mrs. Chambers was called a relative woman, disclaim ing distinction and losing identity in her very domesticity. She seemed one of those who grow into a house and are moved about with the chairs and tables. Her husband loved her because she disturbed not his weary soul, and where she went peace went with her. Sylvia loved her because she had proffered to her first grief a large and passionless bosom. Society loved her because she moved through its particular pool without a ripple of either envy or expectation. Book excerpt: Suddenly the ancient continent disappeared, washed out by a wave against the sky; and with it vanished the last shreds of that accursed nightmare which had possessed her for four endless years. But whether during those unreal years her soul had only been held in bondage, or whether, as she had been taught, it had been irrevocably destroyed, she still remained uncertain, knowing nothing about the death of souls or how it was accomplished.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's unnerving, isn't it? When our faith feels ungrounded, untethered . . . unreal. When our certainty is adrift, as though an undercurrent has pulled us away from shore into the deep, into the darkness. This is disillusionment. This is spiritual pain. This is losing hope. And if this is you--if you're in a dark night of the soul--please know that you are not alone. (And you are not as far away from safety as you may feel or fear.) Though faith shines best in full sun, it grows depth in the dark. The night is not your enemy. In fact, the night is necessary. In The Night Is Normal, revered author, speaker, and mentor Dr. Alicia Britt Chole offers a groundbreaking perspective that reveals spiritual disillusionment as an unexpected friend. Within these sacred pages, you'll explore how: The roots--and fruits--of spiritual pain are actually an invitation to deep love Mistaking emotions for devotion and viewing abundance as proof of obedience create an unsustainable model for Christianity A strong night-faith can lead you into something far more satisfying than understanding and far more powerful than peace Our reality is broken, but God has not changed. Whether you're disillusioned with God, yourself, or others, Alicia offers practical and soul-full tools to help you navigate the night and find your way to a livable and love-saturated hope. Your night will not last forever. Within it, there is priceless treasure that's simply too weighty to be sourced in sunshine.

He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literature is recognised as having significantly influenced the development of modern psychoanalytic thought. In recent years psychoanalysis has drawn increasingly on the literary and artistic traditions of western culture and moved away from its original medical–scientific context. Originally published in 1991 The Chamber of Maiden Thought (Keats's metaphor for 'the awakening of the thinking principle') is an original and revealing exploration of the seminal role of literature in forming the modern psychoanalytic model of the mind. The crux of the 'post-Kleinian' psychoanalytic view of personality development lies in the internal relations between the self and the mind's 'objects'. Meg Harris Williams and Margot Waddell show that these relations have their origins in the drama of identifications which we can see played out metaphorically and figuratively in literature, which presents the self-creative process in aesthetic terms. They argue that psychoanalysis is a true child of literature rather than merely the interpreter or explainer of literature, illustrating this with some examples from clinical experience, but drawing above all on close scrutiny of the dynamic mental processes presented in the work of Shakespeare, Milton, the Romantic poets, Emily Bronte and George Eliot. The Chamber of Maiden Thought will encourage psychoanalytic workers to respond to the influence of literature in exploring symbolic mental processes. By bringing psychoanalysis into creative conjunction with the arts, it enables practitioners to tap a cultural potential whose insights into the human mind are of immense value.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through brilliant portraits of real persons who created the myths and realities of the 1930s, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Murray Kempton brings that turbulent decade to life. Himself a child of the time, Kempton examines with the insight and imagination of a novelist the men and women who embraced, grappled with, and in many cases were destroyed by the myth of revolution. What he calls the “ruins and monuments of the Thirties” include Paul Robeson, Alger Hiss, and Whittaker Chambers, the Hollywood Ten, the rebel women Elizabeth Bentley and Mary Heaton Vorse, and the labor leaders Walter Reuther and Joe Curran.
