Book excerpt: The anthropogenic loading of phosphorus (P) to water bodies continues to increase worldwide, in many cases leading to increased eutrophication and harmful algal blooms. Determining the sources of P and the biogeochemical processes responsible for this increase is often difficult because of the complexity of the inputs and pathways, which vary both in spatial and temporal scales. In order to effectively develop strategies to improve water quality, it is essential to develop a comprehensive understanding of the relationship of P pools with biological uptake and cycling under varied soil and water conditions. In this ebook, eight chapters cover the various aspects of basic-applied research on mineral-P interaction and how these reactions impact P mobilization, bioavailability, transfer, and speciation of P in different soil matrices using advanced analytical methods. Some of these methods include the application of XANES and field-based research related to stream bank legacy nutrients; natural and anthropogenic eutrophication and its relationship to climate change; and the evaluation of the impact of P due to (i) grazing systems, (ii) weathering and vegetation, and iii) soil and manure management practices. In addition, two review chapters take a holistic approach to cover an expansive area of P transformation processes along the cropland-riparian-stream continuum and the assessment of legacy P. Together, these contributions improve our current understanding of the reactions and processes that impact P concentration, speciation, cycling, loss, and transfer from agroecosystems.

The method uses isooctane as the extractant and a gas chromatograph as the determinative instrument. Both field-contaminated samples and spiked sediments were analyzed and results on the spiked samples indicate that the method has a better than 80% recovery rate for WP. The detection limit for the method is 0.88 microg/kg of soil. The WP recovery is sensitive to the water content of the sediments and to prolonged shaking. Fluidizing the wet sediments by adding water to saturated soil greatly increases WP recovery. Since field samples are contaminated with WP particles of various sizes, subsamples may not accurately represent the concentration of the sample as a whole ... Book excerpt: The Chesapeake Bay and its watershed suffer from varying degrees of water quality issues fueled by both point and non--point nutrient sources. Methodological limitations on source tracking and identification of the specific phosphorus (P) pools that can be biologically cycled (or remain recalcitrant) in both the short and long terms are the major obstacles preventing accurate assessment of the nutrient loads that could impact water quality. This research utilized phosphate oxygen isotope ratios, mineralogical (XRD and micro-XRD), microscopic (SEM), elemental, and spectroscopic (31P NMR and 57Fe Mössbauer) methods to characterize P speciation and investigate mechanisms and pathways of P transformations in the Chesapeake Bay and its watershed. In an agricultural soil, short-term transformation of externally applied P to a less or non-bioavailable P pool was tracked by using 18O labeled phosphate. This enabled identification of sources and precipitation pathways of acid extractable P pools. In East Creek, a tidal tributary of the Chesapeake Bay, impact of P loading primarily from agricultural runoff was reflected on the pathways and intensity of P cycling: both input flux higher than microbial cycling and remineralization (degradation of organic P) contributed to higher pore water Pi in the headwater region. In the wetland region, on the other hand, porewater Pi was completed cycled. In the Chesapeake Bay sediments, ferric Fe-bound and authigenic P pools were the two major P sinks, regardless of bottom water hypoxia. Regeneration of Pi from organic matter degradation was found to be the predominant, if not sole, pathway for authigenic P precipitation. Overall, this work generated new insights into the sources, stability, and transformations of various P pools in soils, waters, and sediments under different biogeochemical conditions. These findings are expected to be useful to watershed nutrient management plans as well as to widen source- and pathway- based research in the Chesapeake Bay and other watersheds.
