But what does it really take to win MTV’s The Challenge? And what happens after the cameras stop rolling? Since 1998, MTV’s The Challenge has tested competitors’ physical, mental, and emotional endurance. Some go on to become Challenge legends, going down in history as players who changed the game forever. But for each champion, there are dozens more who try and fail (over and over again) to earn the title. In her time covering the show, pop culture journalist and Challenge superfan Sydney Bucksbaum has gotten to know many of the champs, gaining an insider’s knowledge of what goes into making a winning strategy—and how difficult it is to actually pull it off. Here, she profiles twenty-one of the most popular, successful, and infamous champions and reveals not only how they won The Challenge but also how they applied the skills they learned from the experience to their personal lives and careers. From seven-time winner Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio, Challenge “Godfather” Mark Long, OG champ Veronica Portillo, elimination beast Emily Schromm to most-improved competitors Cara Maria Sorbello and Chris “C.T.” Tamburello, the best in the game look back at their decades of hard work, including the euphoric highs, devastating lows, and everything in between. Eye-opening and inspiring, How to Win at The Challenge and Life is the must-have book for any and all fans looking to level up their own lives—and learn never-before-heard stories from the people who have dominated the show in every way.

How will you muster the energy to keep on keeping on, in the good times and the bad? What skills do you have to learn—and then use—to make sure you get the payoffs you really want in your professional life and your personal life? The Payoff Principle gives you that formula—Purpose + Passion + Process = Payoff—and then works as your guidebook, teaching you how to apply the formula to achieve success at work, at home, and everywhere you go. When you find purpose in what you do, exhibit passion for the outcome, and master the process to make it happen, you produce the payoffs you want, need, and deserve. Plenty of people have done exactly that, whether consciously and deliberately or accidently and luckily. But, you don’t have to depend on luck anymore. You have a formula for getting what you want. You have a practical set of strategies guaranteed to deliver greater happiness and success than you’ve ever experienced. All you have to do now is read The Payoff Principle to learn how to implement the formula to experience the new-and-complete you.

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of inspirational success stories of five people who have achieved tremendous business success. They dealt with severe blows, extreme shocks, and monumental roadblocks on their way to success. They went through not one, not two, but multiple major setbacks before they eventually achieved their share of success. You will notice in their seemingly different stories that they all took bold steps at decisive moments in their life. They CHOSE to move outside their comfort zone and DECIDED not to let the challenges defeat them. They fully accepted the fact that there is no royal road to success, and the path to their goals would be paved with bumps and holes. They came to believe that mindset is everything when you want to achieve your dreams, and that one has to take 100% responsibility for their thoughts, feelings and actions.Get inspired by these stories and learn that by believing in yourself, enhancing your self-awareness, and acquiring the necessary hard- and soft-skills, you will become unstoppable on your journey toward your desired success (and who knows, maybe someday, you get to share your success story in a book like this).

Book excerpt: The prevalence of dementia is increasing rapidly as the population ages and there is a steady rise in people with dementia being admitted to acute hospitals. Media coverage of the care received by people with dementia in acute hospitals is almost wholly negative. The purpose of this book is to provide a detailed description of what the experience, both positive and negative, is really like from the perspectives of patients, lay carers, and health and social care staff, and to propose a model for improving care. The book comprises four elements. A literature review sets person-focused research in the context of dementia research as a whole. Research illuminates the experiences of acute hospital care for people with dementia through ethnographic description and narratives. To improve practice, a development model that engages staff on a cognitive and emotional level based on the philosophies of confluent education and situated learning is explained. Finally, the strands are drawn together to demonstrate that people with dementia, even those at an advanced stage and with superimposed physical illness, can be engaged in research that is both ethical and meaningful. Improvements in practice are possible and they need to be underpinned by a belief in the personhood of staff as well as that of patients. Areas for further research and practice development in this vital subject are identified.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family business: Is it your livelihood? Your legacy? Both? Regardless of your level of involvement, you want the enterprise to succeed and endure. Successful businesses often struggle to remain viable against uncertain economic times, technological advances, shifting consumer preferences, and volatile markets-even without the complexity of dealing with family members. And some family businesses manage to flourish through multiple generations despite these challenges. What makes them different? More important, how can you learn from the experiences of what we call champion family businesses? These successful family businesses take a long view, investing in the company's development for future success. The champion family concept is linked to the family champion, a family owner who acts as a catalyst to help other family members become more effective. In order to facilitate significant development and change throughout the family, family champions engage and inspire the family to work collectively to sustain their legacy. Ultimately, family champions create champion families. This book offers clear examples, practice tips and specific advice to start working on championship elements in your family. Each chapter ends with questions for you to consider, based on the material you've just read, to stimulate your thinking about championship ideas and issues related to your situation. The wisdom from these winning families and their stories can guide you around common obstacles and provide inspiration to your business family, regardless of its size or complexity. "This book opens new ground in the story of the success of multi-generational family business. Its focus is on the nature of innovation and resilience energy in the family, and how it often flows not from top to bottom, or from the old to the new. It is often the spirit and dedication of the newer 'rising' generations that fuels productive change and renewal. Through case studies that highlight the authors' research, this book shows how families invest in innovation by investing in the human resources of each new generation."Dennis Jaffe, Ph.D., Family Advisor, Wise Counsel Research "Every successful family business will better see the critical roles of the Family Champion behind their success. Reading this book will help assure the conditions for Family Champions to exercise their precious leadership for the long-term continuity of their family's enterprise. The lessons of successful families will resonate with you and encourage you. The book's stories and graphics will stick with you."John L. Ward, Ph.D., Clinical Professor Emeritus at Kellogg Center for Family Enterprises and Co-founder of The Family Business Consulting Group

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to gather firsthand accounts of successful practices, and thinking habits, of sports legends and super-athletes—from across sports including football, baseball, basketball, boxing, golf, car-racing, and swimming—this work holds lessons that can power not only athletic success, but winning in any daily challenges of life or work. The result of years of research, Psychology of Champions offers the very personal words of star athletes who explain how they overcame such obstacles as fear, discouragement, and anxiety, and were able to move on to success. Each story—including from those of baseball great Ted Williams, basketball star Michael Jordan, football's famed Deion Sanders, and dozens more from across sports —is unique. Yet, the authors determine that, when all is said and done, the overriding variables accounting for the greatest success fall into three categories: motivation, confidence, and concentration. Barrell and Ryback spell out the rules for such success after each section in this absorbing book. The result is a book that not only entertains and educates us with firsthand accounts of ever-popular sports heroes, but also instructs athletes, amateur or professional, and arguably anyone with a goal to achieve in work or life. In-the-moment accounts reveal just what to do in various critical periods of sports competition—from being at bat in baseball, to making an instantaneous decision as a quarterback, firing the winning basket in the dying moments of a game, or launching the winning move in boxing or judo. Barrell and Ryback draw the lessons together in what they term The Focus Edge mindset. That mindset—and this book— says one former Olympian, take greatness and make it accessible to you and me.

A true sales champion, through his actions, changes lives, companies and entire industries. For anything to truly happen in our economy, a sale must first take place. Whether we are selling ideas, products or services, our economy thrives or dies as a result of the sales process. At some point in history, the sales profession took in incredible hit. As much as it pains me to say it, we did it to ourselves. As with any profession, there are those who inflict pain and loss as a result of their efforts. It comes in many forms. There are those who fail to accept the appropriate training and those who will embellish the facts in order to secure the order. We have seen those who fail to follow through on promises and those who simply fail to follow up. And there are those unfortunate few who have blatantly lied to get ahead only to leave our profession bearing the burden of a poor, sordid reputation. It doesn’t have to be this way. It’s time for the lions to roar!
