Book excerpt: Symbols, a book in the Multiage Differentiated Curriculum Kit for Grades 1-3, gives students the opportunity to explore what symbols are and why they are used. The books in Prufrock's new Differentiated Curriculum Kits employ a differentiated, integrated curriculum based on broad themes. This all-in-one curriculum helps teachers save planning time, ensure compliance with national standards, and most importantly, pique their students' natural excitement and interest in discovery. By participating in the wide variety of activities in the Multiage Differentiated Curriculum Kit for Grades 1-3, students will discover the symbols around them and gain a lifelong desire to learn. Although we are surrounded by symbols for most of our lives, we take most of them for granted. In this study, students will learn why symbols are used, where they originated from, and how they are universally accepted. Symbols presents a study of today's practical symbols, as well as ancient symbols from Chinese and Mayan cultures. Symbols, along with the other books in the Multiage Differentiated Curriculum Kit for Grades 1-3 (Cycles, Discoveries, Faces, and Gifts), makes teaching advanced learners easier! Grades 1-3 This curriculum unit makes use of the following great children's literature books: The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch; The Flying Dragon Room by Audrey Wood; Kingdom of the Sun: A Book of the Planets by Jacqueline Mitton; Math Curse by Jon Scieszka; Uncle Sam and Old Glory by Delno C. West; and Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco.

Book excerpt: 'Signs and Symbols' is one of five books which develop activities in a progressive way. They suggest ideas for liaison between teachers and other school staff and Visiting Musicians. The materials develop simple ways of representing sound, from pictorial, through signs then simple invented symbolic representation, leading to children's own graphic compositions. The terms 'signs' and 'symbol' are used to differentiate the children's invented representations from 'staff' notation (e.g. crotchets, quavers, etc.).The materials offer suggestions for sound exploration activities, useful as preparatory and on-going experience. This series of books is written primarily with the 'generalist' music teacher in mind, although specialists/coordinators may appreciate ideas to add to their music-teaching repertoire. The materials also work well in a Professional Development context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work explores the function of both divisive and uniting symbols in various conflict settings around the world. It takes a fairly broad perspective on what constitutes a symbol, to include objects such as flags, signs, language, and monuments, all of which convey conflicting meanings in a society affected by conflict. In addition, the authors include commemorations and other dynamic events that serve as a means for groups or individuals to connect with past generations, celebrate a heritage, and possibly express religiosity. In order to provide context for the nuances surrounding the symbols, there are brief historical overviews for each conflict featured in the volume. In each chapter, three issues are emphasized: the particular symbols that are divisive in the specific culture; how these symbols were used to perpetuate conflict; and how these symbols can be used or modified to bring unification. Contributions come from authors from around the world that have conducted empirical studies on intergroup relationships or have provided significant academic contributions in the area of symbols and collective memories represented in theoretical publications. Taken together, the contents of the volume provide a rich tapestry of intellectual analyses to the diverse selection of conflict settings from around the globe. In addition to the nine case studies, there is an introductory chapter, which grounds the discussion in current peace psychology literature as well as provides future directions. This volume is a valuable resource to many, as the focus on symbols can span many disciplines such as political science, anthropology, sociology, psychology, and art. Furthermore, it is of significant interest to all scholars and peace activists studying these various countries and their conflicts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When explaining cognition one must explain how representations in the mind, or symbols, become meaningful by connecting to the external world. This process of connecting symbols with sensorimotor experiences is known as symbol grounding. The classical view of symbol grounding is that it is an individual process: a person or machine interacts with the environment and associates symbols with external experiences. This volume contains views from different disciplines – ranging from psychology to robotics – on how this view can be extended by first extending symbol grounding to encompass semiotics and by showing how the classical view exaggerates the importance of written language: grounding does not necessarily involve written notations, but rather language is an external cognitive resource that allows us to acquire categories and concepts. Secondly, as symbol grounding relies on language to acquire and coordinate the process and language is a dynamical process rooted in both culture and biology, symbol grounding by extension is also sensitive to culture, emotion and embodiment. The contributions to this volume were previously published in Interaction Studies 8:1 (2007).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fascinating book, George Schedler offers fresh moral and legal perspectives on two legacies of the Civil War: the adoption of the Confederate battle flag by Southern states and the question of African American reparations. Schedler demonstrates that constitutional objections to Southern states' display of the battle flag are without merit, arguing that either the flag is not a racist symbol or there is a similar case for attaching racist significance to the stars and stripes. Drawing on scholarship of the Civil War and its aftermath, the author concludes that the Confederate battle flag can actually be seen as a multicultural symbol. Schedler's analysis of reparations focuses on the principle that whatever the enslaved would have earned and enjoyed had they not been enslaved should determine compensation. Highly original and thought-provoking, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of the Civil War, moral philosophy, and constitutional law.
