The study concerns the development and verification of non-expensive approach for modeling of supersonic turbulent diffusion flames based on flamelet consideration of the chemistry/turbulence interaction (FL approach). Research work included: development of the approach and CFD tests of the flamelet model for supersonic jet flames; development of the simplified procedure for solution of the flamelet equations based on partial equilibrium chemistry assumption; study of the flame ignition/extinction predictions provided by flamelet model. The performed investigation demonstrated that FL approach allowed to describe satisfactory main features of supersonic H 2/air jet flames. Model demonstrated also high capabilities for reduction of the computational expenses in CFD modeling of the supersonic flames taking into account detailed oxidation chemistry. However, some disadvantages and restrictions of the existing version of approach were found in this study. They were: (1) inaccuracy in predictions of the passive scalar statistics by our turbulence model for one of the considered test cases; and (2) applicability of the available version of the flamelet model to flames without large ignition delay distance only. Based on the results of the performed investigation, we formulated and submitted to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration our Project Proposal for the next step research directed toward further improvement of the FL approach. Turbulent combustion lies at the heart of many of these processes. The accurate, robust and efficient computational modeling of turbulent combustion is necessary to design clean, efficient and safe combustion devices and processes. For practical combustion problems the direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the governing equations is computationally intractable. The Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes simulation (RANS) and large eddy simulation (LES) techniques have emerged as powerful tools to simulate turbulent reacting flows. RANS and LES methodologies require closure of the unclosed terms arising from the averaging or filtering the governing equations. Even with adequate closure, RANS and LES remain computationally infeasible for simulating many combustion processes in engineering applications, further simplifications regarding flame thickness, flow and chemical reaction time scales are required. The high Damk\"{o}hler (Da) number flames can be modeled using a reduced chemistry model. A flamelet derived reduced chemistry model like Flamelet Generated Manifolds (FGM) accounts for finite rate chemistry while it greatly simplifies the simulation of turbulent combustion as it decouples the turbulent transport and flame structure. The interaction between the turbulence and the flame front in non-premixed combustion is described by the probability density function (PDF) of the composition variables. In this work, a framework for turbulent combustion modeling is presented for both RANS and, LES with FGM reduced chemistry model. This framework consists of implementation of presumed and transported PDF models and is developed within the open source CFD software OpenFOAM. The simulation of the well-known piloted methane-air jet flames (Sandia flames) is conducted in RANS context with both presumed and transported PDF models. An "A priori" analysis is conducted based on the RANS/TPDF simulation data. The analysis quantifies the extent of errors in PPDF models, specifically errors in choice of presumed PDF, statistical independence and the number moments and cross moments considered. A new PPDF model based on the Gaussian copula approach for correlation of the composition variables is developed and analyzed. The implementation of RANS/TPDF solver incorporates robust algorithms for particle tracking, position and number control. The LES/TFDF simulation of Sandia flame D is conducted to showcase the capability of the developed framework.

Since combustion is a subgrid scale phenomenon in LES, appropriate modelling is required to describe the SGS combustion effects on the resolved scales. Among the various available models, the flamelet approach is seen to be a promising candidate for practical application because of its computational efficiency, robustness and accuracy. A revised flamelet formulation, FlaRe, is introduced to outline the general LES methodology for combustion modelling and then used for a range of test cases to demonstrate its capabilities for both laboratory burners and practical engine combustors. The LES results generally compare well with the experimental measurements showing that the important physical processes are captured in the simulations.

There are four main CFD models presented in this study that describe a highly turbulent jet-in-crossflow (JIC) simulation of partially premixed and non-premixed jets with a constant chamber pressure of 5 atm absolute. The equivalence ratio of the partially premixed jet was held constant at rich conditions with a [phi][subscript jet] of 4 while the main stage varied from [phi]1 and [phi]2 of 0.575 and 0.73 with an average headend temperature of 1415K and 1545K, respectively. Chemistry was reduced by tabulation of eight main species using the equilibrium calculation of the software Chemkin. The centerline temperatures entering the JIC stage were measured experimentally and used as the starting point of a radial temperature profile that follows a parabolic trend. Comparison between the uniform and radial temperature profiles showed that the latter had a higher penetration depth into the vitiated crossflow due to a direct relationship between temperature and velocity. To capture the combustion process, Flamelet Generated Manifold (FGM) model was used. The progress variable source uses Turbulent Flame Speed Closure (TFC) to calculate flame propagation and position.
