Book excerpt: This archaeological study examines the artifacts found on San Miguel Island, off the coast of California, and provides insights into the lives and culture of the Native American people who lived there. Teggart and Heye analyze the materials and techniques used to create these artifacts, such as stone tools and shell ornaments, to infer the social and economic structures of these communities. Book Synopsis An Account of the Indians of the Santa Barbara Islands in California (Classic Reprint) by : Gustav Eisen

This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Account of the Indians of the Santa Barbara Islands in California Having been requested to write a short account of th 6 Indians of the Santa Barbara Islands I accepted the invitation with pleasure, though with some misgivings. The fact is that next to nothing is known about these now extinct Indians, and the few notices extant are so scattered in rare books and periodicals of an evanescent nature, that it would take months and even years to gather them together. In other words our historical knowledge of the Indians is too small to be very interesting though just on that account the more valuable. There has never appeared in print any connective narrative of these Indians, and the following notes have been culled from what literature I could find without going outside of San Francisco, together with notes made during my visits to these islands in 1873 and 1897. At the earliest of these visits the Indians had already been totally extinct for twenty years. While the skulls and skeletons presented to the Society were collected only on the Island of Santa Rosa, I have thought it best to include in this account all the other islands of the channel. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from California as a Place to Live California todaycoast. People who formerly regarded California almost as far away as Alaska, now drive out for a summer or winter vacation without thinking of the matter twice. What these people have seen, they have liked. They have gone home and told their families and friends, and the biggest population shift of this century thus began. The Census Bureau predicts that during the next ten years this trek to California will continue unabated. It is not the purpose of this book to persuade people to come to California. Several millions are already persuaded, and are eagerly waiting to head West in a mass exodus that will dwarf every other migration in the country's history. The purpose of this book is to give as much information as possible about what these people may expect to find when they reach California. What are the facts, the figures, the attractions, the opportunities, and what are the disad vantages and hazards of life in the Golden State? To begin with, what is the truth about California's vaunted climate? What are her many very distinctive cities like? Which of her industries are still rapidly expanding and seeking for workers? What are the rates of pay for different kinds of work in California? What is the cost of living? What are the opportunities for jobs, for an education, for culture, for enjoyment? What about state old-age pensions and retirement funds? What kinds of farming and small business ven tures offer the greatest possibilities for a return on work and invest ment? The three and a half million people who will be moving to California to live during the next ten years, and the many millions more who will visit the state during that same period, will want to know the answers to these questions, and to dozens more like them. The purpose of this book is to try to give honest answers to them all. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Days of California: Embracing What I Saw and Heard There, With Scenes in the Pacific We may learn much from the pulseless soli tudes - from the desert untrodden by the foot of living thing - from the frozen world of mountains, whose chasms and cliffs never echoed to aught but the thunder-tempests girding their frozen peaks from old Nature, piled, rocky, bladeless, toneless if we will allow its lessons of awe to reach the mind, and impress it with the fresh and holy images which they were made to inspire. And now, dear reader, my task is done. Should you laugh and weep, suffer and rejoice, with the actors in the wayfarings before you, and send your fancy in after-times over those rose-clad realms where they will lead you, and feel the dews of a pleasant remembrance falling on your life, I shall receive a full reward for my toil. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Years in California The permanency of first impressions is strikingly shown by the very common impression in regard to California. It was first known to the world as a gold producing country, and men are slow to learn that While gold continues to be a very considerable product it is far exceeded in value and extent by other indus tries. The gold product is now principally obtained by quartz-mining, which requires large capital to con duct it. There is no longer any furor connected with the business, nor are fortunes now made in a day. Mining is conducted as a legitimate business, of which the average yield has been, for the last few years, about twenty millions of dollars per annum. As a bullion producing State, including gold and silver, California has fallen into the second place - it is outranked by Nevada, which, in 1875, produced more than twice as much as the Golden State. But the increase in agri cultural products is more than an offset for the falling off in this direction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fur Seal Investigations, 1968 Information about marked seals continues to upset any of our previous notions about the purity of separate populations in the North Pacific. A small colony of seals that produced young in 1968 on San Miguel Island, off the coast of California, included marked animals from the Pribilof and Commander Islands. A male seal marked in late June 1968 on the Pribilof Islands was taken on the Commander Islands within a month. It untangles and pieces together the fragmentary threads of the early Spanish records and weaves them into a clear and consecutive narrative that makes the story of the great Peninsula vivid; it is permeated with the knowledge and results which the author gained through his own careful investigations in the Peninsula.
