Book excerpt: Illuminates an aspect of African art that has largely been neglected by other books. African sculptures and art can be difficult to decipher because they are more than tokens of "art for art's sake." African art is often based on religious and philosophical values. It is created not just for the patron but for the entire community, using a language of form to help the society to understand what cannot otherwise be put into words. Through an enlightening analysis of some continent's most emblematic artifacts, this book decodes African art by putting it in the context of the broader culture. It is thematically organized around key motifs to help you fully understand African art. 150 colour illustrations

The DVD, 'Ci Wara Invocation, ' "presents the highlights of a dozen ci wara performances in Bamana communities in present-day Mali that were recorded by five different observers between 1970-2002. Among the Bamana, oral traditions credit a mythical being named Ci Wara, a divine being half mortal and half antelope, with the introduction of agriculture to the Bamana. The ci wara performances are part of biannual celebrations that either launch or conclude the farming season."--Container

Book Synopsis The World of Spirits and Ancestors in the Art of Western Sub-Saharan Africa by : Elizabeth Skidmore Sasser
Download or read book The World of Spirits and Ancestors in the Art of Western Sub-Saharan Africa written by Elizabeth Skidmore Sasser and published by Texas Tech University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World of Spirits and Ancestors in the Art of Western Sub-Saharan Africa illustrates for the first time a collection of African Sculpture at the Museum of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. The masks and figurative carvings from the late nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century are from two sources: Ambassador and Mrs. Julius Walker's gift to ICASALS (International Center for Arid and Semiarid Land Studies), now on permanent loan to the Museum, and the Elliot Howard Collection. Howard, an artist and authority on antiques, chose examples of sculpture for their "variety and aesthetic appeal". His hope was that the pieces he assembled would provide new discoveries for those unacquainted with the art of Africa and an art experience that would "enhance mutual respect among people". Fittingly, then, a context for understanding is the focus of Elizabeth Skidmore Sasser's book. As the title suggests, The World of Spirits and Ancestors introduces carefully chosen examples of masks and figures as social and spiritual communications imbued with the living history and culture of the various peoples of western sub-Saharan Africa. Sasser emphasizes that geography and climate - ranging from semiarid deserts to tropical rain forests - influence not only the art but also the habitations and ceremonial life of the region. More than 180 drawings and illustrations reflect the creative genius that continues to meet environmental challenges and to express the distinctive contributions of the cultures and the people of western sub-Saharan Africa.

Book Synopsis Islam and Tribal Art in West Africa by : René A. Bravmann
Download or read book Islam and Tribal Art in West Africa written by René A. Bravmann and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1974-05-31 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most writers have assumed that the spread of the Islamic faith has tended to weaken and undermine the foundations of traditional African society and culture. In this interesting and original study Professor Bravmann re-examines and refutes the assumption that the aniconic attitudes of Islam, especially the prohibition of representational imagery, have had a detrimental effect on the visual arts in the areas of West Africa influenced by this universalistic faith. The strength and flexibility of West African societies and their art forms is clearly revealed in the major part of this study, which is devoted to a detailed examination of the impact of Islam upon traditional art in the Cercle de Bondoukou and west central areas of Ghana. The text is illustrated with numerous photographs showing a variety of art forms and masquerades in the region.

Book Synopsis Art and Religion in Africa by : Rosalind I. J. Hackett
Download or read book Art and Religion in Africa written by Rosalind I. J. Hackett and published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson. This book was released on 1996 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The artistic and religious traditions of Africa constitute a primary expression of the intellectual and cultural vitality of this vast and fascinating continent. Art plays a vital role - especially when oral traditions dominate - in expressing and communicating ideas about the relationships between the human, spiritual and natural worlds. However, despite the ritual and symbolic significance of many artistic works, the interactive and interdependent relationship between art and religion in the African context remains understudied and misunderstood. This book draws on the methodologies of several disciplines to provide a greater understanding of the philosophical and religious aspects of artistic works and to challenge Western perceptions of what is "important". Case studies and examples reflect the geographical, material and gendered diversity of Africa's visual and performing arts and highlight the changes imposed by Christianity, Islam and the newer religious movements in post-colonial Africa.
