What China had been before its reunification as the Yuan dynasty in 1279 was no longer what it would be in the future. Four centuries later, another wave of steppe invaders would replace the Ming dynasty with yet another foreign occupation. Book excerpt: The project reported on in this monograph has been concerned with the archaeology of the Batanes Islands, an archipelago that must have been settled quite early in the process of Austronesian dispersal from Taiwan southwards into the Philippines. A multi-phase archaeological sequence covering the past 4000 years for the islands of Itbayat, Batan, Sabtang and Siayan is presented, extending from the Neolithic to the final phase of Batanes prehistory, just prior to the late 17th century arrivals of foreign navigators such as Jirobei (Japan) and William Dampier (England), followed by the first Spanish missionaries. So far, no traces of preceramic settlement have been found in Batanes, but the archaeological sequence there from the Neolithic onwards, like that in the Cagayan Valley in northern Luzon, is now one of the best-established in the Philippines.

This book is the first major study to trace Wagner's relationship with Paris from his first sojourn there (1839-1842) to the Paris Tannhäuser (1861). How did Wagner's experiences in Paris influence his works and social character? How does his sometime desire for recognition by the French cultural establishment square with his German national identity and with the related idea of a universally valid art? This book presents Wagner's perennial ambition of an international operatic success in the "capital city of the nineteenth century" and the paradoxical consequences of that ambition upon its failure. Through an examination of previously neglected source materials, the book engages with ideas in the so-called "Wagner debate" as an ongoing philosophical project that tries to come to terms with the composer's Germanness. The book is in three main parts arranged broadly in chronological sequence. The first considers Wagner's earliest years in Paris, focusing on his own French-language drafts of Das Liebesverbot and Der fliegende Holländer. The second part explores his stance towards Paris "at a distance" following his return to Saxony and subsequent political exile. Arriving at Wagner's most often discussed "Paris period" (1859-61), the third part interrogates the concert performances under the composer's direction at the Théâtre-Italien and revisionist aspects of their reception. It is still collected and traded to this day. The Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst in Cologne has trawled through its woodcut repository and viewed its collection of Japanese coloured woodblock prints and books as a whole for the first time. The result is a selection of the most unusual and valuable pieces, which are presented in a special large-scale exhibition and this catalogue. Alongside the primitive, hand-coloured pieces from the end of the 17th century, there are coloured woodblock prints from the worlds of entertainment and the Kabuki theatre ( ukiyo-e ) of the 18th and 19th centuries; depictions of historical warriors and heroes; landscape prints from the famous series by Hokusai and Hiroshige; depictions of flowers, birds, insects and fish; precious privately commissioned calendar prints ( surimono ); quirky depictions of foreigners from Nagasaki; a comprehensive collection of prints from the Meiji period with illustrations of the Sino-Japanese War; and modern Shin-hanga (new woodcut prints) from the Taisho period onwards. A collection of important books complements this broad range of prints, including rare first editions of Hokusai_s manga as well as instructional books for hobby painters, which give an introduction to the stylistic peculiarities of various painting schools. The diversity and the richness of this extensive collection reveals the beauty and importance of the Japanese woodblock print as never before.
