Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illinois Clays and Shales as Mortar Mix The use of clay as a plasticizer in cement-mortars was reported as early as 1884 and 1888. Examples of mortars that contain clay and that have shown excel lent strength and weather resistance for periods of 25 or more years are known. A number of experimental studies have been made on the properties of mortars that contain clay materials. Grant1 reported in 1891 that a 10 per cent clay impurity in sand 'was not detrimental to the mortar strength. Davis and Troxell2 studied the volumetric changes in Portland cement mortars with additions of lime hydrate and of Clay. The contraction of the clay-cement mortar after 375 days in air was somewhat greater than that of the lime-cement mor tar mixed in the same proportions. Tests of expansion of masonry piers laid up With the various mortars showed a somewhat smaller change in those containing clay than in the lime - cement or the plain cement mortars. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tests on Clay Materials Available in Illinois Coal Mines During the first season, the collection of samples was made inci dental to the regular field work of the geologists, and some actual sampling was done by the mining companies. Twenty - three samples were collected and tested during the winter of 1912-13 and designated as Group 1. The desirability of systematic sampling was recognized, and during the summer of 1913 one man's entire attention was given to this work. Eighty-three samples were collected, and in this report they are designated as Group II. The tests on this series were similar to those for Group I, but more efficient means were devised during the second season for grinding and molding-the material. Tabulated data on the individual samples of clays tested are given in Appen dix A; thickness of beds and stratigraphic sequence of clays are shown by the mea sured sections in Appendix B; and some supplemental references are given in Appen dix C. The three previous reports on clays of this nature have been published for 'lasalle (parham, Knox (parham, and Rock Island, Mercer, and Henry Counties (parham. Book excerpt: Based on the author's lectures to graduate students of geosciences, physics, chemistry and materials science, this didactic handbook covers basic aspects of ceramics such as composition and structure as well as such advanced topics as achieving specific functionalities by choosing the right materials. The focus lies on the thermal transformation processes of natural raw materials to arrive at traditional structural ceramics and on the general physical principles of advanced functional ceramics. The book thus provides practice-oriented information to readers in research, development and engineering on how to understand, make and improve ceramics and derived products, while also serving as a rapid reference for the practitioner. The choice of topics and style of presentation make it equally useful for chemists, materials scientists, engineers and mineralogists.

Book excerpt: A Comprehensive and Self-Contained Treatment of the Theory and Practical Applications of Ceramic Materials When failure occurs in ceramic materials, it is often catastrophic, instantaneous, and total. Now in its Second Edition, this important book arms readers with a thorough and accurate understanding of the causes of these failures and how to design ceramics for failure avoidance. It systematically covers: Stress and strain Types of mechanical behavior Strength of defect-free solids Linear elastic fracture mechanics Measurements of elasticity, strength, and fracture toughness Subcritical crack propagation Toughening mechanisms in ceramics Effects of microstructure on toughness and strength Cyclic fatigue of ceramics Thermal stress and thermal shock in ceramics Fractography Dislocation and plastic deformation in ceramics Creep and superplasticity of ceramics Creep rupture at high temperatures and safe life design Hardness and wear And more While maintaining the first edition's reputation for being an indispensable professional resource, this new edition has been updated with sketches, explanations, figures, tables, summaries, and problem sets to make it more student-friendly as a textbook in undergraduate and graduate courses on the mechanical properties of ceramics.

Drawing on a wealth of research and featuring more than one hundred color photographs, An Illini Place provides an engrossing and beautiful answer to that question. Lex Tate and John Franch trace the story of the university's evolution through its buildings. Oral histories, official reports, dedication programs, and developmental plans both practical and quixotic inform the story. The authors also provide special chapters on campus icons and on the buildings, arenas and other spaces made possible by donors and friends of the university. Adding to the experience is a web companion that includes profiles of the planners, architects, and presidents instrumental in the campus's growth, plus an illustrated inventory of current and former campus plans and buildings.
