Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ceramic Fibers and Fibrous Composite Materials has a two-fold purpose. First, it supplements and updates the information on ceramic and graphite fibers and whiskers which was presented in Volume 1 of the Refractory Materials Monograph Series. Secondly it reviews the progress being made in fiber-reinforced materials which utilize these newer fibers as reinforcements. For this latter purpose, the properties of composites, the problems of fiber handling and alignment, the problems of fiber-matrix interaction, and the effects of fabrication processes on composite properties are discussed. In addition, a chapter on fiber and whisker testing is included.

Download or read book Ceramic Fibers and Coatings written by Committee on Advanced Fibers for High-Temperature Ceramic Composites and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-05-05 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-temperature ceramic fibers are the key components of ceramic matrix composites (CMCs). Ceramic fiber properties (strength, temperature and creep resistance, for example)-along with the debonding characteristics of their coatings-determine the properties of CMCs. This report outlines the state of the art in high-temperature ceramic fibers and coatings, assesses fibers and coatings in terms of future needs, and recommends promising avenues of research. CMCs are also discussed in this report to provide a context for discussing high-temperature ceramic fibers and coatings.

Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Fibre Reinforced Composite Materials by : A.R. Bunsell
Download or read book Fundamentals of Fibre Reinforced Composite Materials written by A.R. Bunsell and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-06-15 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiber reinforced composite materials encompass a wide range of material classes from reinforced glasses, plastics, and rubbers through to more recently developed metals and ceramics. Fundamentals of Fibre Reinforced Composite Materials is a comprehensive and authoritative book that introduces the topic with a brief history of composite development, a review of composite applications, the types of fibre used, and their respective indiviual properties. An entire chapter considers organic matrices and their behavior, reviewing all of the most commonly encountered polymer matrix systems. Composite manufacturing techniques are then discussed, including those methods employed in the production of advanced metal and ceramic matrix composites. The remaining chapters are devoted primarily to theoretical treatments of composite behavior, with emphasis on the understanding of damage mechanisms such as cracking, delamination, and fibre breakage. Where a mathematical approach is required, an attempt is made to relate the sometimes rather abstract notions back at the structure of the material being discussed. With extensive sets of sample problems accompanying each chapter, Fundamentals of Fibre Reinforced Composite Materials is ideally suited to undergraduate and graduate students of materials science, structural, mechanical, and aeronautical engineering, polymer science, metallurgy, physics and chemistry. It will also be of use as a reference to researchers working with composite materials and material scientists in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extreme high temperature stability and damage tolerance of materials and components required for space, terrestrial, energetic and many other applications can only be achieved by ceramic materials. All over the world research is going on to develop ceramics with quasiductile behaviour. The materials with the highest potential for high temperature applications are fibre reinforced ceramic matrix composites (CMC). The international conference HT-CMC 4 in Munich will continue the tradition of its successful predecessor meetings held in Bordeaux (France, 1993), Santa Barbara (USA, 1995) and Osaka (Japan, 1998). This conference series has been recognized as the central meeting event in high temperature CMC science and technology and demonstrates the great interest in research and development on reinforced ceramics. The Proceedings of this conference will therefore be a valuable reference for every materials scientist or engineer involved in this field of high-tech materials development.
