Book excerpt: The mutual relationship between change in population distribution and its determinants and consequences on one hand, and social and economic development on the other, is becoming an increasingly important area of concern for researchers, policy makers and planners alike. During tha last several years the International Geographical Union Commission on Population Geography has devoted much of its attention to this problem and organized a series of international meetings focusing on population redistribution and its ramifications in different parts of the world. During one such meeting, held in 1980 in Karachi, Pakistan, some thirty papers were submitted by participants coming mostly from five countries in South Asia: Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The present volume is an outcome of that symposium, but it should not be regarded merely as a report of proceedings; these have been published separately by the Commission. Furthermore, all Pakistani papers were published in their original version in a separate volume edited by M.1. Siddiqi, who coordinated local arrangements for the meeting on behalf of Karachi University. This present volume offers only a selection of the original papers, all substantially edited and thoroughly revised, and brings them together with additionally solicited texts. All original figures have been redrawn and tables and references have been updated and standardized as much as possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers the language situation in Hong Kong, Timor-Leste and Sri Lanka explaining the linguistic diversity, the historical and political contexts and the current language situation, including language-in-education planning, the role of the media, the role of religion and the roles of non-indigenous languages. Two of the authors are indigenous to the situations described while the other has undertaken extensive field work and consulting there. The three monographs contained in this volume draw together the literature on each of the polities to present an overview of the research available about each of them, while providing new research-based information. The purpose of the volume is to provide an up-to-date overview of the language situation in each polity based on a series of key questions in the hope that this might facilitate the development of a richer theory to guide language policy and planning in other polities where similar issues may arise. This book was published as special issues of Current Issues in Language Planning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the revised version of his doctoral thesis on Political Violence in the Third World: A Case Study of Sri Lanka: 1971-1987 . It is a systematic, empirical study of the left-wing insurrection by the Janatha Vimkuthi Peramuna (JVP) in April 1971 and the ethnic insurrection by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) up to the Indo Sri Lanka Accord of 1987. This is an in-depth study regarding a crucial phase of the on-going political violence in Sri Lanka. The book emphasizes that the root cause for the Political Violence in Sri Lanka is not only confined to ethnic groups but also on socio-economic basis too. The study explores the socio-economic and political background that paved the way to the origin and development of underground movements, the genesis of ideologies, the strategies and tactics adopted leading to the escalation of political violence. This book will therefore, serve as a core reading material to understand the political violence in Sri Lanka. Consequently, it will serve as a very useful authentic reference material for the students of political science and policy makers concerned in search of a sustainable consensus and compromise for setting the political violence in Sri Lanka. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year, millions of people are internally displaced and resettled in the wake of wars and floods or to make way for large-scale development projects, and this number is increasing. Humanitarian and development specialists continue to struggle with designing and executing effective protection strategies and durable solutions. Relocation Failures explains how internal displacement and efforts to engineer resettlement are conceived and practiced by policy makers and practitioners. The author argues that policies for internally displaced peoples are weak and diluted by narrow interpretations of state sovereignty and collective action dilemmas, and in the case of Sri Lanka, unintentionally intensified ethnic segregation and ultimately war. This unique new book considers the origins and parameters of internal displacement and resettlement policy and practice and proposes an explanation for why it often fails. In highlighting the ways that development assistance can exacerbate smoldering conflicts, the volume provides an important caution to the aid community.

Book excerpt: In the mid-1950s, Sri Lanka’s majority Sinhalese politicians began outbidding one another on who could provide the greatest advantages for their community, using the Sinhala language as their instrument. The appeal to Sinhalese linguistic nationalism precipitated a situation in which the movement to replace English as the country’s official language with Sinhala and Tamil (the language of Sri Lanka’s principal minority) was abandoned and Sinhala alone became the official language in 1956. The Tamils’ subsequent protests led to anti-Tamil riots and institutional decay, which meant that supposedly representative agencies of government catered to Sinhalese preferences and blatantly disregarded minority interests. This in turn led to the Tamils’ mobilizing, first politically then militarily, and by the mid-1970s Tamil youth were bent on creating a separate state.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fate of the newly independent nation is absorbing the attention of statesmen and scholars. This comprehensive study of Ceylon since its independence in 1947 provides a case study of the fundamental issues in these new Asian and African nations. Mr. Wriggins, who spent two years in Ceylon, presents the full historic, economic, political, and social background. He discusses the current political situation in Ceylon, the effect of universal franchise, the increasing communal disorders, the resulting dilemma of representative government, the search for an adequate foreign policy. His findings, which are based on extensive on-the-spot research, illuminate the crucial problem of political change. Originally published in 1960.
