Book excerpt: Certain symbols abound in modern Western culture that are instantly recognizable: the cross signifies Christianity, the six-pointed Star of David is revered by Jews, the golden arches frequently means it's time for lunch. Other symbols, however, require a bit of decoding-particularly those found in cemeteries. Cemeteries are virtual encyclopedias of symbolism. Engravings on tombstones, mausoleums and memorials tell us just about everything there is to know about a person: date of birth and death as well as religion, ethnicity, occupation, community interests, and much more. In the fascinating new book Stories in Stone: The Complete Guide to Cemetery Symbolism by noted author Douglas Keister, the secrets of cemetery symbolism are finally revealed. Did you know that it is quite rare to see a sunflower on a tombstone? Did you know that the human foot symbolizes humility and service since it consistently touches the earth? Or the humble sheaf of wheat-while it is often used to denote someone who has lived a long and fruitful life? Do you know other meanings it might carry? Stories in Stone provides history along with images of a wide variety of common and not-so-common cemetery symbols, and offers an in-depth examination of stone relics and the personal and intimate details they display-flora and fauna, religious icons, society symbols, and final impressions of how the deceased wished to be remembered. Douglas Keister has created a practical field guide that is compact and portable, perfect for those interested in family histories and genealogical research, and is the only book of its kind that unlocks the language of symbols in a comprehensive and easy-to-understand manner. Douglas Keister has photographed fourteen award-winning, critically acclaimed books (including Red Tile Style: America's Spanish Revival Architecture, The Bungalow: America's Arts & Crafts Home, and Storybook Style: America's Whimsical Homes of the Twenties) earning him the title "America's most noted photographer of historic architecture." He also writes and illustrates magazine articles and contributes photographs and essays to other books, calendars, posters, and greeting cards. Doug lives in Chico, California, and travels frequently to photograph and lecture on historic architecture and photography.

This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calvary Cemetery is located in the Cincinnati, Ohio, suburb of Evanston and covers thirteen acres. The first burial was recorded in November 1865; over 17,000 interments have since been made and the grounds remain active. This new work reprints Calvary Cemetery's burial records in their entirety, cross-referenced with readings from headstones and markers to ensure accuracy. Records are arranged alphabetically by surname and contain (wherever available): full name of the deceased, date of birth, date of death, age at time of death and date of interment, with cemetery section, lot and row numbers. Generally, these records contain little supplemental information but do occasionally note familial relations (such as father, mother, sister, or brother), military service and name changes. In addition to thousands of Cincinnati area residents, Calvary Cemetery is also the resting place of Sisters from three religious convents: the Sisters of St. Ursula Convent and Academy in Section E, the Little Sisters of the Poor in Sections S and I, and the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, also in Section I. These women are listed together with fellow members of their order, identified by both their birth and religious names. Their surnames, as well as those of allied family members, are included in the "Additional Family Related Surname Index" which closes this volume. A map is included showing the locations of all burial grounds in Hamilton County, followed by plats for each section of Calvary Cemetery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Examines our evolving mourning rituals, specifically in relationship to cemeteries . . . a levelheaded report on the death care industry.” —Los Angeles Review of Books In modern society, we have professionalized our care for the dying and deceased in hospitals and hospices, churches and funeral homes, cemeteries and mausoleums to aid dazed and disoriented mourners. But these formal institutions can be alienating and cold, leaving people craving a more humane mourning and burial process. The burial treatment itself has come to be seen as wasteful and harmful—marked by chemicals, plush caskets, and manicured greens. Today’s bereaved are therefore increasingly turning away from the old ways of death and searching for a more personalized, environmentally responsible, and ethical means of grief. Is the Cemetery Dead? gets to the heart of the tragedy of death, chronicling how Americans are inventing new or adapting old traditions, burial places, and memorials. In illustrative prose, David Charles Sloane shows how people are taking control of their grief by bringing their relatives home to die, interring them in natural burial grounds, mourning them online, or memorializing them streetside with a shrine, ghost bike, or RIP mural. Today’s mourners are increasingly breaking free of conventions to better embrace the person they want to remember. As Sloane shows, these changes threaten the future of the cemetery, causing cemeteries to seek to become more responsive institutions. A trained historian, Sloane is also descendent from multiple generations of cemetery managers and he grew up in Syracuse’s Oakwood Cemetery. Enriched by these experiences, as well as his personal struggles with overwhelming grief, Sloane presents a remarkable and accessible tour of our new American way of death.

Book excerpt: One woman’s struggle to restore an old slave cemetery uncovers centuries-old racism When China Galland visited her childhood hometown in east Texas, she learned of an unmarked cemetery for slaves-Love Cemetery. Her ensuing quest to restore and reclaim the cemetary unearths racial wounds that have never completely healed. Research becomes activism as she organizes a grassroots, interracial committee, made up of local religious leaders and lay people, to work on restoring community access to the cemetery. The author also presents material from the time of slavery and the Reconstruction Era, including stories of “landtakings” (the theft of land from African Americans), and forms of slavery that continued well into the twentieth century. Ultimately Keepers of Love delivers a message of tremendous hope as members of both black and white communities come together to right an historical wrong, and in so doing, discover each other’s common dignity. “Galland captures the struggle to reclaim one small cemetery in Texas with such engrossing drama and personal detail that the story becomes something larger still-a universal struggle to reclaim the ground of Deep Compassion that lies untended in the human heart.”-Sue Monk Kidd

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eastern Cemetery is Portland's oldest burial ground. It is believed that burials were made here in the 1600s, but no records or markers survive from that period. Record keeping was equally lax in the 1700s. To bring order into the use of the cemetery, the Selectmen were authorized in 1795 to lay out the "Burial Ground into regular plats & divisions," but it was not until 1890 that a thorough and systematic survey of this large cemetery was finally done. At that time William Augustus Goodwin produced a listing of 4,136 gravestones, monuments, tombs, and grave sites, along with an accurate map showing the location of every marker. In compiling the present volume, Professor Jordan visited and checked each grave on the Goodwin map, and made additions and corrections as required. He also compared the stones with the extant burial records, and has included entries for allthose persons known to have been buried here, but for whom there are no markers. In addition, several appendices list individuals whose bodies were consigned to the Portland Medical School or the Maine Medical School for teaching purposes, individuals buried in the Alms House Yard, victims of the shipwreck of the Bohemia and the 1866 Portland fire, and individuals placed in the City Tomb whose subsequent burial place was not recorded in the city burial records. In this large collection of about 7,000 records, each entry gives the person's full name, death date, and burial location. Other data, such as age, relationships, military service, race, and religion are given where known. The data are alphabetically arranged by the name of the deceased, and there is a cross-index to other persons named. The introduction to the volume gives a detailed history of the cemetery.
