Book excerpt: Excerpt from Celtic Remains After the lapse of upwards of a century after his death, the principal literary labour which occupied the greater part of the lifetime of Lewis Morris is now for the first time made public. With the exception of a few pages, by way of specimen, appended to a short account of the work and its author, which appeared in the Archwologia Cambrensis for 1 872, no portion of the Celtic Remains is known to have been printed, though not unfrequently referred to, and often eulogised, by some of our antiquarian writers of a past generation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Celtic Remains The author generally refers to Welsh writers, espe ci ally in the quotations from the bards, by the initials of their names, after the fashion adopted by Dr. Davies in his Grammar and Dictionary. Most of these names have been printed in full, or sufficiently full, to obviate the inconvenience of referring to the explanatory lists in the now scarce volumes of that eminent scholar. On the contrary, the terms nomen loci, nomen proprium viri, nomen proprium feminw, and the like, which in the original are sometimes written in full, and some times more or less contractedly, will almost uniformly be found here represented by n. L, n. Pr. V., and n. Pr. F. The initials J. D., which frequently occur after place-names, appear to denote John Davies, the author of Display of Herauldfry (l A few of the contrae tions met with in the ms. The Editor was not able to decipher, as the author nowhere explains any of his abbreviations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Celtic Britain These are the days of little books, and when the author was asked to add one to their number, he accepted the invitation with the jaunty simplicity Of an inexperienced hand, thinking that it could not give him much trouble to expand or otherwise modify the account given Of early Britain in larger works but closer acquaintance with them -soon convinced him Of the folly of such a plan - he had to study the subject for himself or leave it alone. In trying to do the former he probably read enough to have enabled him to write a larger work than this 5 but he would be ashamed to confess how long it has occupied him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Archaeological Index: To Remains of Antiquity of the Celtic, Romano-British, and Anglo-Saxon Periods It must afford some gratification to those who have laboured to contribute to our stores of Archaeological information, to witness in this country a growing taste for the study of Antiquities. The ridicule which once attended the prosecution of this study is hushed; and the mute but eloquent relics of Antiquity, are now regarded with interest by all who aspire to be informed of the manners and customs of those who have preceded us. With such evidence of an improved taste and zeal for the cultivation of Archaeological science, it would be needless to plead for its usefulness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of the Ancient Celts And we are left to our own interpretations, more or less valid, of the existing materials, and to the light shed on them by the comparative study of religions. As this book was written during a long residence in the Isle of Skye, where the old language of the people still survives, and where the genius loci speaks everywhere of things remote and strange, it may have been easier to attempt to realise the ancient religion there than in a busier or more prosaic place. Yet at every point I have felt how much would have been gained could an old Celt or Druid have revisited his former haunts, and permitted me to question him on a hundred matters which must remain obscure. But this, alas, might not be. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Celtic Religion in Pre-Christian Times IT is only as prehistoric archaology has come to throw more and more light on the early civilisa tions of Celtic lands that it has become possible to interpret Celtic religion from a thoroughly modern viewpoint. The author cordially acknowledges his indebtedness to numerous writers on this sub jcet, but his researches into some portions of the field especially have suggested to him the possi bility of giving a new presentation to certain facts and groups of facts, which the existing evidence disclosed. It is to be hoped that a new interest in the religion of the Celts may thereby be aroused. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bronze Age and the Celtic World The author has felt that it would be for the convenience of the reader if he reduced the footnotes at the bottom of the page to the smallest possible dimensions, while describing each work quoted very fully in the bibliography at the end of the volume. In many cases, where the subject matter does not form the basis of his argument and the fact is not in dispute, he has thought that it would be more useful to quote a recent and readily accessible volume, preferably in English, in which authorities are fully cited, than to include all the original authorities in the notes and bibliography. This applies specially to Chapter II, and to some extent to those immediately following. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The letters that flamed in gold flame On its virgin whiteness I scanned - I love you, "I love you, 0 Love" - And I whispered, I understand. I thought I did. Foolish we be! I, in Sorrows intense solitude Where the dread hours drag into ages, Fared far ere I understood. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Celtic Art in Pagan and Christian Times Celtic art naturally divides itself into two distinct periods, the Pagan and the Christian. With regard to the latter, the remains have been SO fully investigated that it is hardly probable any new facts will be brought to light which will seriously alter the conclusions now arrived at. With regard to the Pagan period the case is altogether different, as most of the finds hitherto made have been due to accident, and until the large number of inhabited and fortified sites belonging to this period are systematically excavated our knowledge must necessarily remain incomplete. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles in Western Cornwall by the Footsteps of the Giants: With Notes on the Celtic Remains of the Land's End District and the Islands of Scilly I had never opened that singular and valuable folio volume, - Borlase's Antiquities of Cornwall, first published in 1754, and again, with a few additons, in 1769, - without feeling a curiosity and desire to examine the original monuments therein described, and to pay a visit to a land which the uncornish reader of that work pictures to himself as literally strewn with solemn cromlechs and hoary circles, all popularly known as memorials of the giants of old. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of Celtic Literature The following remarks on the study of Celtic literature formed the substance of four lectures given by me last year and the year before in the chair of poetry at Oxford. They were first published in the Cornhill Magasine, and are now reprinted from thence Again and again, in the course of them, I have marked the very humble scope intended; which i Snot to treat any special branch of scientific Celtic studies (a task for which I am quite incompetent), but to point out the many directions in which the results of those studies offer matter of general interest and to insist on the benefit we may all derive from knowing the Celt and things Celtic more thoroughly. It was impossible however, to avoid touching on certain points of ethnology and philology; which can be securely handled only by those who have made these sciences the object of special study.
