Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress made in the last 20 years clearly indicates that the cell surface is an extremely dynamic structure involved in fundamental processes such as cell motility, innervation, and cell adhesion. Of particular interest is the finding that, in several tissues, the cell surface is differen tiated at the intercellular region, thereby providing communicating chan nels between apposing cells. Although our actual knowledge of the precise structures and mecha in the complex process of intercellular communication is still nisms involved scanty, evidence has been presented that ions and molecules diffuse from cell to cell, establishing a physiological continuum. Embryonic differentia tion, cell growth, neoplasia, electrical synchronization in nerve and mus cles, as well as immune response seem to be related to ceIl communication. In organizing this volume, it has been our intention to provide the reader with an actual review of the processes involved in intercellular communication in normal tissues as well as in neoplasia. We sincerely believe that the opinions and experiences described herein will be of help in establishing new perspectives for the future of this exciting new field of cell biology. We wish to thank all the colleagues who joined us in the organization of this volume, as well as Plenum Publishing Corporation for making its appearance possible.

Book excerpt: This detailed book brings together a new set of protocols to arm cell biologists with techniques that are currently being used in a number of well-established laboratories around the world. The contents represent the great strides made in the field of cell-cell communications with respect to the identification and characterization of key components of the communication apparatus, assembly and maintenance of the communications structures, and concomitantly their roles in not only tissue formation and maintenance but also regeneration and repair. Written for the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series, chapters include introductions to their respective chapters, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and practical, Stem Cell Renewal and Cell-Cell Communication: Methods and Protocols, Second Edition serves as an ideal guide for experts and newcomers alike seeking to increase our understanding of the crucial biological and physiological roles of cell-cell communications in tissue function and organismal integrity.

Book excerpt: In Heart Cell Communication in Health and Disease an extensive review of different aspects of heart cell communication is presented. The book starts with the fundamental concept that cardiac cells are communicated, and then proceeds to the role of gap junctions in heart development, the molecular biology of gap junctions, the biophysics of the intercellular channels, the control of junctional conductance and the influence of gap junctions on impulse propagation. This is the first time that a single volume has described cell communication in the normal heart and under different pathological conditions such as heart failure, coronary disease, myocardial ischemia and cardiac arrhythmias. In this way the process of cell communication is analyzed at different levels of complexity, providing the reader with a wide view of this field and its relevance to cardiology.

Book excerpt: This book elucidates the genetic, biological, morphological and functional aspects of telocytes. Telocytes are a recently defined type of interstitial (stromal) cells, with very long (tens to hundreds of micrometres) and very thin prolongations (mostly below the resolving power of light microscopy). The book describes the presence of telocytes in various organs and tissues, details their morphological characteristics, explores their genomic and proteomic profiles, puts forward preclinical evidence of their application, and discusses their potential in the context of clinical therapeutics. As such, it offers a valuable guide for biologists and clinicians alike. Dr. Xiangdong Wang is a distinguished Professor of Medicine. He is Director of the Shanghai Institute of Clinical Bioinformatics, Executive Director of the Clinical Science Institute at Fudan University Zhongshan Hospital, Shanghai, China; Dr. Dragos Cretoiu is an Associate Professor of Pathology at the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Bucharest.

Book excerpt: Emerging and currently available technologies offer great promise for helping older adults, even those without serious disabilities, to live healthy, comfortable, and productive lives. What technologies offer the most potential benefit? What challenges must be overcome, what problems must be solved, for this promise to be fulfilled? How can federal agencies like the National Institute on Aging best use their resources to support the translation from laboratory findings to useful, marketable products and services? Technology for Adaptive Aging is the product of a workshop that brought together distinguished experts in aging research and in technology to discuss applications of technology to communication, education and learning, employment, health, living environments, and transportation for older adults. It includes all of the workshop papers and the report of the committee that organized the workshop. The committee report synthesizes and evaluates the points made in the workshop papers and recommends priorities for federal support of translational research in technology for older adults.
