Book excerpt: Excerpt from Celebration of the Centennial Anniversary of the University of the State The University of the State of New York was established by an act of the Legislature, passed May 1, 1781. By this act, and subsequent amendatory acts, the supervision of the institutions of secondary and superior education in the State was intrusted to the Regents of the University. They were thus constituted a State board of education which, in priority of establishment, antedates all others in the United States. The century which has since elapsed has witnessed the inception, organization and development of the present noble system of education in the State. In this work the part of the Board of Regents has been so conspicuous and honora ble that it has been deemed appropriate to celebrate, in some suitable manner, the centennial anniversary of its establishment. It was accordingly arranged that special commemorative services Should be held in connection with the usual University Convocation of 1884. The following pages comprise the proceedings of this centennial celebration, together with the papers and discussions of the Twenty Second Convocation. The fame of the orators, the excellence of the special historical discourses, the unparalleled dignity and import ance of the educational discussions combined to render the occa sion a worthy and fitting memorial of a century of disinterested service.
