Book excerpt: On April 27, 2015, I knew I needed to go to the emergency room of my local hospital. I understood that something was wrong with me, but I didn’t understand what. Little did I know I would have to confront an unexpected, major physical illness. Would I have the “serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference?” (Serenity Prayer). My memoir traces my three-year journey facing a sudden traumatic illness that took a toll on me both physically and mentally and led me to explore many avenues in my search for renewed health. I hope this book helps others coping with a life-threatening event, whatever that may be, in their quest for healing.

Download or read book The NHS written by Susan Cohen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-12 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1948 marked a turning point in British history, for it was the year that the National Health Service began. Inaugurated by the health minister, Aneurin 'Nye' Bevan, the new nationwide system was established to provide countrywide free healthcare for every citizen at the point of use, and, as Bevan believed, would 'lift the shadow from millions of homes.' No longer would people have to fear paying for their medical care and potentially being pushed into poverty. Every aspect of medical care began to change, gradually affecting the way that the profession, including doctors, nurses, district nurses, dentists, opticians, pharmacists and hospitals practised and operated. It also created new opportunities, enabling the scope of treatments available to grow. This beautifully illustrated book traces the origins of the NHS, from Florence Nightingale, to the NHS beginnings in 1948 and the subsequent decades and introduces readers to the people who worked for the NHS and to the men, women and children who benefited from the new universal system. Viewed through the prism of social history, and using personal recollections, this story takes account of the debates surrounding the evolving system, and looks at the way that innovation and science have transformed healthcare since the NHS began.

Book Synopsis The Global Spread of Islamism and the Consequences for Terrorism by : Michael Freeman
Download or read book The Global Spread of Islamism and the Consequences for Terrorism written by Michael Freeman and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2021-02 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrorism motivated by Islamist religious ideology has been on the rise for the last forty years. Why? The three prior waves of terrorism—anarchist, nationalist, and Marxist—arose generally from a combination of geopolitical events and local grievances. This “fourth wave” of terrorism, however, has risen out of a different set of conditions. Existing analyses of terrorism often consider how terrorist ideologies have evolved or how grievances have changed over time. But these approaches miss what could be called the “supply” side of ideology—how state and nonstate actors have exported an ideology of Islamism and how this ideology has taken root beyond what grievances or ideological interpretations would predict. Michael Freeman connect the dots between several key events in 1979—the hostage crisis at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, the Iranian Revolution, and the Soviet incursion into Afghanistan—and the incentives these events created for different actors to spread the supply of Islamism, the institutions they produced in various countries, and the terrorists who emerge from these institutions. In The Global Spread of Islamism and the Consequences for Terrorism Freeman examines four countries that have experienced this export of Islamism—Indonesia, Pakistan, the United Kingdom, and the United States—and briefly describes similar patterns in other countries. Understanding the importance of the supply side of Islamism helps us better understand the strength and staying power of this current wave of terrorism as well as opportunities to better counter it.
