Così il sottotenente del 98◦ Otmar Muhlauser, mastro pellicciaio in pensione a Dillingen sul Danubio, nel cuore della Svevia, si è sottratto alla condanna. Muhlauser comandava il secondo plotone, che cominciò la tragica giornata del 24 settembre fucilando il generale Gandin. Così l’ha scampata il caporale Alfred Stork, reo confesso: «Dovevamo sparare in tre su ogni ufficiale: uno in testa e due al petto. Al termine ero completamente sfinito. Abbiamo caricato i corpi su un vecchio traghetto, che si è diretto verso il mare aperto. Quando sono tornati abbiamo chiesto che cosa ne avessero fatto dei cadaveri, ci hanno risposto di averli legati insieme e gettati in mare». Hanno tutti ripetuto di aver eseguito gli ordini ricevuti da Hitler. In ciascuno di loro il profondo convincimento bene sintetizzato alla sentenza choc con cui la procura di Monaco ha respinto il desiderio di giustizia delle vittime italiane: «archiviazione perché i soldati italiani a Cefalonia erano traditori, e quindi andavano trattati come i disertori tedeschi: fucilati». Per fortuna il ricordo dei tanti ragazzi (età media 24 anni), che s’immolarono in nome di un’Italia non pi∙ fascista e non ancora repubblicana, è tenuto vivo dai figli, dai nipoti, da quanti hanno scoperto in anni recenti il loro sacrificio. L’eccidio di Cefalonia, «una delle azioni più arbitrarie e disonorevoli nella lunga storia del combattimento armato», così fu definito a Norimberga, non è in tal modo caduto nell’oblio, grazie anche alle pagine di questo commovente e straziante libro che ne ricostruisce la tragica vicenda. «Un libro bellissimo e documentato».
