Book Synopsis The Robbie Burns Revival & Other Stories by : Cecilia Kennedy
Download or read book The Robbie Burns Revival & Other Stories written by Cecilia Kennedy and published by Broken Jaw Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These linked short stories tell the tales of Tony Aardehuis, a young Ontario police officer who centres more on the human puzzle than on crime and detection. Fraud, theft, blackmail: every small town crime short of murder drives these stories to conclusions that usually warm the heart. Along the way Tony struggles, like the rest of us, to figure it all out. The first Tony Aardehuis story was inspired by the Eastern Ontario ice storm of 1998 and the suggestion that natural disaster might double as a murder weapon. This constable meets life with a fine blend of curiosity, compassion and an occasional bent for bending the rules. Tony Aardehuis's adventures have been published in The Grist Mill, Bone Dance, and Storyteller Magazine, where he twice won The Great Canadian Story Contest. One story is also shortlisted for a 2003 Arthur Ellis Award.
Book Synopsis "The Nail", and Other Stories by : Pedro Antonio de Alarcón
Download or read book "The Nail", and Other Stories written by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, eight stories written by Pedro Antonio de Alarcon have been brought together in English for the first time. The nail in "The Nail" is found driven into a disinterred skull, and if some of the events are implausible and others incredible, it is also true that there is considerable suspense and mystery. "The Cornet" draws more heavily on historical reality, with its depiction of the horror of civil war and factual detail. Noteworthy for its first-person narration and rapid-fire dialogue, "The Cornet" paints an episode of fraternal love and the power of the will. "The Orderly," although set against the same Carlist War background, has more to do with a military "attitude" than a Carlist "War", and describes the transformation effected in one officer by one orderly. The War of Independence (1808-14) was fought against Napoleon and his attempt to place his brother Joseph on the Spanish throne. After years of horrendous carnage and the Duke of Wellington's victory at Vitoria, the "Little Corporal" renounced the Spanish crown. The War of Independence stories - "The French Sympathizer" and "The Mayor of Lapeza"--Have been known to generations of Spanish readers, especially for their theme of patriotism. These two, together with "Long Live the Pope!" and "The Guardian Angel," extol the heroism and courage of the Spanish people. "The Foreigner," the story of a young Pole who had been conscripted into Napoleon's army, looks at Spain and two of her soldiers through the eyes of a Spanish muleteer.

Book Synopsis Chioniso and Other Stories by : Shimmer Chinodya
Download or read book Chioniso and Other Stories written by Shimmer Chinodya and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2012 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new collection, Chioniso and other stories, we are once again reminded how Shimmer Chinodya mines his experience for nuggets. Playing with his doppelganger, Godfrey, he looks back on life in Harare, and in Zimbabwe, over the last decade, exploring it from a familial perspective. How does a father cope with a rebellious daughter or a wife he perceives as wayward? How does one mediate traditional gender roles? What to do when status in the form of a car undermines the stability of a marriage? How does one manage a friendship with a new farmer? What moral compromises are demanded by new wealth and political cronyism? And what is the effect of religion on our lives? Have we become more caring and compassionate, or does piety provide a mask, to disguise greed and ambition, and justify a contempt for the poor? This collection of stories will make you laugh, but it will also challenge you to reconsider what it means to be Zimbabwean in the 21st century.
