Book Synopsis 16th Deep-Sea Biology Symposium by : Alexandra Anh-Thu Weber
Download or read book 16th Deep-Sea Biology Symposium written by Alexandra Anh-Thu Weber and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-11-28 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 16th Deep-Sea Biology Symposium was held in Brest, France, and online from the 12th to the 17th of September 2021. The first DSBS hybrid symposium brought together scientists, students, managers, policymakers, and industry specialists who presented advances in deep-sea research. Themes of the symposium, and of this Research Topic, include: - Conservation and stewardship: natural/anthropogenic impacts, conservation, governance. This includes but it is not limited to: deep-seabed mining, pollutants and debris, climate change impacts; marine spatial planning; stewardship of the deep ocean; - Biodiversity and ecosystem functioning: biodiversity patterns, species distribution, function; from polar to temperate regions, mesopelagic to hadal, microbes to large pelagic; - Life-history traits and population connectivity: reproductive ecology, larval development and dispersal, and population connectivity; - Adaptations of deep-sea organisms: from molecules to organisms: how life adapts to extreme conditions, including for instance bioluminescence and vision in the deep-sea; - Access to the deep sea: technological and methodological advances to access and investigate deep-sea life, including observatories and cutting edge technologies –e.g. A.I. and omics; - Deep-sea biomimicry: discovery of new technologies inspired by deep-sea biological solutions; - Science communication in the deep including innovative approaches to increase ocean literacy (merging “arts & sciences”).
Book Synopsis Exploration and Utilization of Marine and Freshwater High-Value Biological Resources by : Shuhao Huo
Download or read book Exploration and Utilization of Marine and Freshwater High-Value Biological Resources written by Shuhao Huo and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-10-16 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine/freshwater biological resources are of great economic, social and ecological value. Aquatic ecosystems, mainly formed by aquatic biological resources, play an important role in maintaining material circulation, energy flow, and environmental purification. Efficient, safe, sustainable utilization and high-value development of marine/freshwater biological resources, thereby promoting grain security, food security, and environmental security, has been a long term research focus. It is one of the most practical and innovative fields in global scientific and technological innovation and an effective way to solve the major problems restricting human resources shortage.

Book Synopsis Southern Ocean Ecology by : Sayed Z. El-Sayed
Download or read book Southern Ocean Ecology written by Sayed Z. El-Sayed and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-02-24 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BIOMASS (Biological Investigations of Marine Antarctic Systems and Stocks) was a unique, large-scale, long-term, international research programme established in 1977 to investigate the ecology of the Southern Ocean. Its main aim was to gain a greater understanding of the biological systems and stocks in the marine Antarctic environment, thereby providing a sound basis for the future management of the living resources within this immense ocean. The programme was drawn to a close in 1991 and its completion marked by a colloquium which brought together key researchers to summarise and review the results obtained. This volume, arising from that colloquium, provides a succinct, state-of-the-art account of the ecology of the Southern Ocean and serves as a comprehensive record of this unique and successful international project.
Book Synopsis Krill Fisheries of the World by : Stephen Nicol
Download or read book Krill Fisheries of the World written by Stephen Nicol and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1997 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Euphausiids, or krill, have been harvested since at least the 19th century and possibly earlier (Fisher et al. 1953). It is, however, only in the last 50 years that large scale commercial harvesting of krill has occurred. Despite the widespread distribution of euphausiids throughout the oceans of the world and their undoubted abundance, they have only been harvested in large quantities in two areas - in Antarctic waters and in the coastal waters off Japan. There are, however, experimental or small-scale krill fisheries in other areas and there has been speculation about the potential for such fisheries in still further areas. This report summarises the available knowledge about the existing fisheries and draws together information on other species of euphausiids that have been thought to have commercial potential. A number of other reports have been written on the commercial potential of krill, particularly Antarctic krill (Budzinski et al. 1985; Eddie 1977; Everson 1977; Grantham 1977). Another relatively recent review (Neal and Maris 1985) asessed the harvest of krill in the context of fisheries biology of other shrimps and shrimp-like animals. This report provides additional material to that provided in these reports but no attempt has been made to summarise their content except where it is necessary to understand new developments. Much of the information on the fisheries for Euphausia pacifica is published in Japanese or is published in reports of fisheries agencies. For this reason, the biology of, and the fisheries on, this species are dealt with in some detail utilising these information sources which have not previously been readily available.
