Book Synopsis Policy Options and Long-term Projections for Social Security by : Juanita Harmon
Download or read book Policy Options and Long-term Projections for Social Security written by Juanita Harmon and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Security (comprising Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) and Disability Insurance (DI)) is the largest single program in the federal government's budget. In 2010, annual outlays for the program exceeded annual revenues (excluding interest) credited to the combined trust funds. A gap between those amounts has persisted since then, and in fiscal year 2015 outlays exceeded tax revenues by almost 9 percent. As the baby-boom generation retires over the next 10 years, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projects, the gap will widen between amounts credited to the trust funds and payments to beneficiaries. This book considers 36 policy options that are among those commonly proposed by policymakers and analysts as a means of restoring financial security to the Social Security program. Furthermore, this book presents additional information about CBO's long-term projections for Social Security in the form of 15 exhibits that illustrate the program's finances and the distribution of benefits paid to and payroll taxes collected from various groups of people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents projections of federal spending and revenues over the coming decades. Under current law, an aging population and rapidly rising health care costs will sharply increase federal spending for health care programs and Social Security. If revenues remained at their historical average share of gross domestic product (GDP), such spending growth would cause federal debt to grow to unsustainable levels. If policymakers are to put the federal government on a sustainable budgetary path, they will need to increase revenues substantially as a percentage of GDP, decrease spending significantly from projected levels, or adopt some combination of those two approaches. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explores the chronology of the Social Security program prior to the Great Depression. The author rigorously examines what led to the development of Social Security insurance, partially in an attempt to determine whether it is necessary to reform the Social Security program. He demonstrates the economic implications of the rise of the elderly population in the United States and how democratic governance affects the Social Security program. The author objectively examines the strengths and weaknesses in the privatization of the United States Social Security program. The author also elucidates political ideologies of social security in democratic nations globally, and how political parties view their social security systems as they try to stabilize their systems.
