Book Synopsis CURRICULUM-BASED ASSESSMENT by : Charles H. Hargis
Download or read book CURRICULUM-BASED ASSESSMENT written by Charles H. Hargis and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thoroughly updated and expanded, this fourth edition focuses on the use of curriculum-based assessment to ensure learning disabled and low-achieving students adequate educational opportunities. The text explores ways of providing detail and explanation in the context of current and emerging issues in educational assessment and standards. The point that educational success is more than just avoiding failure is emphasized, and throughout the book, precise definitions and examples of various instructional situations are presented. Shifting emphasis from identifying deficit areas to finding and inventorying skills and abilities, CBA requires an intimate relationship between teaching and testing. To help the instructor achieve this balance, the author offers examples and methods of implementation through reading and arithmetic activities and discusses at length the issues involved in test validity and grading. The primary objective of curriculum-based assessment is the success of students, and much of the book is devoted to its two primary steps: finding the level on the curriculum where the student can succeed and then incorporating assessment practices in the daily teaching activities so that success is an ongoing affair. To further update this edition, two additional new chapters have been added: “The Paradox of Setting Standards by Grade Level” and “Assessing Writing.” The book’s simple format, readability, and detailed descriptions of instructional methodology make it a significant resource. Designed to assist instructors, curriculum persons, special educators, and administrators, the book will also be helpful to researchers, counselors, social workers, and other professionals in human service organizations.

Download or read book Chicago Lawyers written by John P. Heinz and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 1982-12-15 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What determines the systematic allocation of status, power, and economic reward among lawyers? What kind of social structure organizes lawyers' roles in the bar and in the larger community? As Heinz and Laumann convincingly demonstrate, the legal profession is stratified primarily by the character of the clients served, not by the type of legal service rendered. In fact, the distinction between corporate and individual clients divides the bar into two remarkably separate hemispheres. Using data from extensive personal interviews with nearly 800 Chicago lawyers, the authors show that lawyers who serve one type of client seldom serve the other. Furthermore, lawyers' political, ethno-religious, and social ties are very likely to correspond to those of their client types. Greater deference is consistently shown to corporate lawyers, who seem to acquire power by association with their powerful clients. Heinz and Laumann also discover that these two "hemispheres" of the legal profession are not effectively integrated by intraprofessional organizations such as the bar, courts, or law schools. The fact that the bar is structured primarily along extraprofessional lines raises intriguing questions about the law and the nature of professionalism, questions addressed in a provocative and far-ranging final chapter. This volume, published jointly with the American Bar Foundation, offers a uniquely sophisticated and comprehensive analysis of lawyers' professional lives. It will be of exceptional importance to sociologists and others interested in the legal profession, in the general study of professions, and in social stratification and the distribution of power.

Download or read book Amy Grant written by Bob Millard and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2003-12-31 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amy Grant is a bona fide pop star with roots of gospel. As one of the biggest-selling recording artists in gospel music history, she's made the sectarian leap to mainstream "pop gospel" - but not without a fight. Grant has learned that success doesn't come easily, or directly. Despite the Grammys, numerous Dove awards, and the throngs of devoted fans, Grant has had to live with often conflicting loyalties to her career and her spiritual beliefs. As the most glorious symbol of the new Christian woman - tough, liberated, ready to admit her mistakes - Grant is not content to sugarcoat the trials of her life. She has knowingly planted her feet on two antagonistic grounds: secular and religious, commandeering her conflicted position head-on, with warmth and grace.

Book Synopsis Data Mining for Scientific and Engineering Applications by : R.L. Grossman
Download or read book Data Mining for Scientific and Engineering Applications written by R.L. Grossman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in technology are making massive data sets common in many scientific disciplines, such as astronomy, medical imaging, bio-informatics, combinatorial chemistry, remote sensing, and physics. To find useful information in these data sets, scientists and engineers are turning to data mining techniques. This book is a collection of papers based on the first two in a series of workshops on mining scientific datasets. It illustrates the diversity of problems and application areas that can benefit from data mining, as well as the issues and challenges that differentiate scientific data mining from its commercial counterpart. While the focus of the book is on mining scientific data, the work is of broader interest as many of the techniques can be applied equally well to data arising in business and web applications. Audience: This work would be an excellent text for students and researchers who are familiar with the basic principles of data mining and want to learn more about the application of data mining to their problem in science or engineering.
