Book excerpt: Bombshell - Boogie Woogie II Your spouse, lover, significant other, or trusted friend - cheated on you. Wow! He or she betrayed the sacred vows and commitment you made on your wedding day, before witness and God only to leave you to suffer through the sickening whirlwind of anger, grief, anxiety, and, perhaps worst of all, your shattered sense of sense of self-esteem due to being caught up in the boogie woogie. You are terrified! Period! You feel hopeless; as there is no way you will ever be able to get past the horror and put the pieces of your devastated marriage or relationship back together again ... But it happened. You will get over it. Even the best in our society goes through the hurt and boogie woogie. Boogie Woogie II will share the pain, healing, laughter, and awareness of those perhaps caught up and those that were smart enough to heal and move on. But in order to defeat the boogie woogie the following notions must be accepted and understood: betrayal, being vengeful, feeling guilt, being in a state of fear, carrying around anger, feeling frustrated, and paranoid feelings, and disappointment (not necessarily in these order).

Book excerpt: The golden age of animation stretched from the early 1930s to the mid-1950s, with movie cartoons reaching an extraordinarily high level of artistry and technique--far higher than today's TV cartoons, for instance. Nearly 1000 cartoons were produced by the seven major animation studios in the U.S. between January 1, 1939, and September 30, 1945--the immediate pre-World War II period up to the cessation of hostilities. More than a quarter of the cartoons substantially refer to the war, and thereby are invaluable in helping to understand American attitudes and Hollywood's reflection of them. The meat of Doing Their Bit is a filmography with extremely detailed summaries of the 260 or so commercially produced, animated, war-related shorts, 1939-1945. There is also a good bit of overall commentary on these films as a group. Two chapters wrap up animated cartoons of World War I and the general political tenor of animated talkies of the 1930s. This edition also includes a new chapter on the outrageous government-sponsored Pvt Snafus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philadelphia Stories is a kind of family album. As in their earlier volume, Still Philadelphia: A Photographic History, 1890-1940, Miller, Vogel, and Davis have collected photographs of ordinary lives and daily events from 1920 to 1960 that have shaped the collective memory of people in the Philadelphia area. Through a series of photo essays, Philadelphia Stories evokes the mood of an era that embraced the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, and the complacent prosperity of the 1950s. Contemporary photos document physical changes in the metropolitan area: the developing skyline, the streets of rowhouses, the expanding suburbs. Details on homelife, food prices, school activities, local politics, shopping, social mores, and neighborhood customs chronicle experiences that are in many ways distinct to Philadelphians but also indicative of dramatic social, political, and economic shifts in the United States over forty years. Using photojournalism as the dominant style of documentary photography—and consciousness making—the book also features three prototypical family albums. These collections of snapshots taken by local residents to record weddings, holidays, and other family events not only depict how people saw themselves at various times but reveal the kinds of memories they wanted to keep. While major national events create the context for this social history, the book focuses on the daily lives of Philadelphians: as they cope with the Depression, participate in New Deal programs, buy automobiles and television sets, grow Victory Gardens, hold air raid drills, visit the Freedom Train, move to the suburbs, cling to old neighborhoods, and maintain tradition amid flux.Philadelphia Stories celebrates the recent past in the words and images of those who experienced it. It is a family album for all who know and love the city. Author note: Fredric M. Miller is Curator of the Urban Archives Center, Paley Library, Temple University.Morris J. Vogel is Professor of History, Temple University.Allen F. Davis is Professor of History, Temple University.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: His Will and Mine: Pleasing Benefits of Joyful Service to the Lord explains the terms and conditions of our existence before, during and after rebirth. The book gives reasons why this is possible for undeserving, sinful creatures like ourselves. Says author Andy Reddick, When making ourselves a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, we conform to His will as God orchestrates, but we find ourselves at peace, fully enjoying the enrichment process that changes us through His grace. Originality is featured as we serve and praise Him in complete happiness. Our perfection was lost as a result of once exercising free choice against God's will, but we are pardoned for this offense and all others. Therefore, excuses for hanging onto our own selfish agenda are lame. In the rebirth regeneration, Jesus allows us an alternative that delivers us away from the cursed world. This wonderful gift of salvation is a binding process with the most solid foundation in the universe, and the choice to subscribe to it is ours. From a state of being spiritually dead, we are raised to life and awakened to a magic kingdom with a joyful future, so notes the book His Will and Mine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the process of Americanization of Yugoslav culture and everyday life during the sixties. After having fallen out of the Eastern bloc, Tito turned to American backing. In political spheres distance was carefully guarded, yet in the realms of culture and consumption the Yugoslav regime was definitely much more receptive. For Titoist Yugoslavia this tactic turned out to be rewarding. It stabilised the regime internally and gave it an image of openness in foreign policy. The book addresses the link between cultural diplomacy, culture, consumer society and politics. The main argument is that both culture and everyday life modelled on the American way were a major source of legitimacy for the Yugoslav Communist Party, and a powerful weapon for both USA and Yugoslavia in the Cold War battle for hearts and minds. Vucetic explores how the Party used American culture in order to promote its own values and how life in this socialist and capitalist hybrid system looked like for ordinary people, living in a country with communist ideology wrapped in capitalist form. The book offers a careful reevaluation of the limits of appropriating the American dream. The analysis raises doubts toward both the uncritical celebration of Yugoslavia's openness and the exaggerated picture of its authoritarianism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All too often, we think of our minds and bodies separately. The reality couldn’t be more different: the fundamental fact about our mind is that it is embodied. We have a deep visceral, emotional, and qualitative relationship to the world—and any scientifically and philosophically satisfactory view of the mind must take into account the ways that cognition, meaning, language, action, and values are grounded in and shaped by that embodiment. This book gathers the best of philosopher Mark Johnson’s essays addressing questions of our embodiment as they deal with aesthetics—which, he argues, we need to rethink so that it takes into account the central role of body-based meaning. Viewed that way, the arts can give us profound insights into the processes of meaning making that underlie our conceptual systems and cultural practices. Johnson shows how our embodiment shapes our philosophy, science, morality, and art; what emerges is a view of humans as aesthetic, meaning-making creatures who draw on their deepest physical processes to make sense of the world around them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1930s, swing bands combined jazz and popular music to create large-scale dreams for the Depression generation, capturing the imagination of America's young people, music critics, and the music business. Swingin' the Dream explores that world, looking at the racial mixing-up and musical swinging-out that shook the nation and has kept people dancing ever since. "Swingin' the Dream is an intelligent, provocative study of the big band era, chiefly during its golden hours in the 1930s; not merely does Lewis A. Erenberg give the music its full due, but he places it in a larger context and makes, for the most part, a plausible case for its importance."—Jonathan Yardley, Washington Post Book World "An absorbing read for fans and an insightful view of the impact of an important homegrown art form."—Publishers Weekly "[A] fascinating celebration of the decade or so in which American popular music basked in the sunlight of a seemingly endless high noon."—Tony Russell, Times Literary Supplement
