Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newfoundland and Labrador are like two uneasy stepsisters, each with its own distinct identity, trying to share a common house. Using original research, including personal interviews, and drawing on his forty-year association with Labrador, Bill Rompkey explores this relationship in the context of the region's unique racial, geographical, political, and social history. Rompkey charts the rise of Labrador as a giant in Canada's near north. He looks at the impact of the region's vast natural resources, which includes the recently discovered nickel mine at Voisey's Bay, the largest in the world, and Ramah chert, a choice stone the Aboriginals traded thousands of years ago. The Story of Labrador is also the story of Innuit caribou hunters and people of the seal, French fishermen and Basque whalers, settlers, traders, and absentee governors. It is the story of great Canadian construction projects like the Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway, the rich iron ore operations at Labrador City and Wabush, and Chuchill Fall, which was the largest hydro project in the world when it was created.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part anthropological history, part informed critique, Encounters examines the relations between the people of southeastern Labrador and the many visitors who have come to fish, heal the sick, and extract the region's resources. John Kennedy presents the latest archaeological, genealogical, and ethno-historical research that changes scholarly understandings of southeastern Labrador. Departing from the conventional view that coastal Labrador has distinct Inuit and non-Inuit regions, he argues that the coast should be viewed as a continuum of "Inuitness." Encounters unravels the social implications of the region's complex mercantile fishery, describes how twentieth-century military and resource development have impacted Labrador's seasonal economy, and suggests that Newfoundland continues to use Labrador as a colony. Kennedy uses field research he conducted in 2013 to describe the origins, current economies, and future challenges of the region's tiny villages. Although he is a strong supporter of Aboriginal land claims, Kennedy explores the impact of identity politics in the region, showing how land claims based solely on geography can unintentionally create inequities. Drawing on decades of field and archival research, Kennedy demonstrates how Aboriginal politics are transforming society in southeastern Labrador, empowering local people to overcome the stigmas of history and finally acknowledge their Inuit ancestry.

Book excerpt: Kennedy (anthropology, Memorial U. of Newfoundland) explores the little known European settlers of southeastern Labrador between the Chautea and Sandwich Bays. He shows how their annual migration between farming and fishing sites has been interrupted during the 20th century and the people have become centralized and dependent as in other rural areas. Among the other highlights are the role of Inuit enclaves in the early European settlement, the impact of the Grenville mission, industrial and military developments, and how people adjusted to some intrusions and not to others. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collapse of the North Atlantic cod fishery in 1992 was one of the world's worst ecological disasters, and in 1995 Spanish and Canadian trawlers faced off over the dwindling supply of turbot. Where there used to be plenty, there is now virtually nothing; fishing communities that once survived (or even prospered) now face ruin. The twenty essays in How Deep is the Ocean? take a detailed look at the evolution of the Canadian east coast fishery. The book begins with aboriginal fishers before European contact; then it follows the European fishery through the days of sail, when boats could scarcely make headway through the teeming cod, to the diesel age, when electronic aids can find almost no cod. How Deep is the Ocean? covers the sociology of early fishing communities, the impact and significance of the credit system, and the techniques and technologies of aboriginal, European, and Canadian fisheries. The essays on the twentieth century include old-time fishing patterns of living memory and the changed state of the North Atlantic's ecology.
