Book excerpt: Some say that the only force powerful enough to destroy the Knights Templar was the Roman Catholic Church. Alarmed by the persistent reports that Freemasonry was the rebirth of the Templars, the Church took deadly aim at this seemingly innocent organization. Noted Masonic scholar Dudley Wright recounts the events of the Church's history of attacks and persecution of Freemasonry. It is a story that must be read. Included in this revised edition is the 1884 "Humanus Genus" by Pope Leo XIII and the answer by Albert Pike.

Book excerpt: This book aims to educate and construct, to be charitable even to those with whom the author may disagree, and never to vent the venom of spite or malice even upon those who seem deliberately determined to mislead. I revere the Catholic religion and Freemasonry as both are divine in essence and were born to further the aspiration of the striving soul, each have hidden messages and a missions in the world not apparent upon the surface today. Humans have made the ceremonial in part to hide secret knowledge. This book seeks to reveal this knowledge and show the Cosmic purpose of these two Great Organizations, which have at times historically been bitterly antagonistic to each other. Without any aim to reconcile them, however, for though they are both designed to further the emancipation of the soul. Although their methods are different, and the attributes of the soul fostered by one method will indeed be very different from the qualities of the soul nurtured in the other. This book endeavors to show the cosmic root of both of these institutions, the purpose of each and the training which each inaugurates; also the nature of the soul quality which may be expected to result from each method. The author is neither a Freemason nor a Catholic, and thus is free to reveal what he knows without fear of violating any obligations or other reprecussions.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Freemasonry and Catholicism: An Exposition of the Cosmic Facts Underlying These Two Great Institutions as Determined by Occult Investigation HE Rosicrucian Fellowship aims to educate and construct, to be charitable even to those from whom we differ, and never to vent the venom Of vitu peration, spite, or malice even upon those who seem deliberately determined to mislead. We revere the Catholic religion; it is as divine in its essence, as Mystic Masonry - both are rooted in hoary antiquity, both were born to further the aspiration Of the striv ing soul, and both have a message and a mission in the world not apparent upon the surface today, be cause man-made ceremonial as a scale has hidden the kernel Of divinity in each. It is the Obj ect Of the present articles to remove that scale and show the Cosmic purpose Of these two Great Organizations, which are so bitterly antagonistic to each other. We do not aim to reconcile them, however, for though they are both designed to further the emancipation Of the soul, their methods are difierent, and the attributes Of the soul fostered by one method will in deed be very different from the quality Of the soul nurtured in the other School. Therefore the strife must continue until the battle for the souls Of menhas been lost and won. The issue is not, however, the persistence Of the Masonic or Catholic institutions; but the outcome will determine the nature Of the training humanity will receive in the remaining Periods Of our evolution. We shall endeavor to show the cosmic root Of both Of these institutions, the pur pose Of each and the training which each will inau garate, if successful; also the nature Of the soul qual ity which may be expected to result from each method. The writer is not a Mason, and thus he is free to say what he knows without fear of violating obligations, but he is a Mason at heart, and there fore frankly opposed to Catholicism. Book excerpt: Excerpt: The race of man, after its miserable fall from God, the Creator and the Giver of heavenly gifts, "through the envy of the devil," separated into two diverse and opposite parts, of which the one steadfastly contends for truth and virtue, the other of those things which are contrary to virtue and to truth. The one is the kingdom of God on earth, namely, the true Church of Jesus Christ; and those who desire from their heart to be united with it, so as to gain salvation, must of necessity serve God and His only-begotten Son with their whole mind and with an entire will. The other is the kingdom of Satan, in whose possession and control are all whosoever follow the fatal example of their leader and of our first parents, those who refuse to obey the divine and eternal law, and who have many aims of their own in contempt of God, and many aims also against God.2. This twofold kingdom St. Augustine keenly discerned and described after the manner of two cities, contrary in their laws because striving for contrary objects; and with a subtle brevity he expressed the efficient cause of each in these words: "Two loves formed two cities: the love of self, reaching even to contempt of God, an earthly city; and the love of God, reaching to contempt of self, a heavenly one." At every period of time each has been in conflict with the other, with a variety and multiplicity of weapons and of warfare, although not always with equal ardour and assault. At this period, however, the partisans of evil seems to be combining together, and to be struggling with united vehemence, led on or assisted by that strongly organized and widespread association called the Freemasons. No longer making any secret of their purposes, they are now boldly rising up against God Himself. They are planning the destruction of holy Church publicly and openly, and this with the set purpose of utterly despoiling the nations of Christendom, if it were possible, of the blessings obtained for us through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Lamenting these evils, We are constrained by the charity which urges Our heart to cry out often to God: "For lo, Thy enemies have made a noise; and they that hate Thee have lifted up the head.
