This book was released on 2009-05-05 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eight essays in this collection explore the work of Adrienne Rich, one of America’s most significant living writers and a poet and a public intellectual with a substantial audience both inside and outside the academy. Taken together, the essays argue for a shift in the perceived center of gravity of Rich’s career, from the passionate and eloquent poems of a largely personal feminist awakening, from the mid 60s to the early 80s, to the equally (if differently) passionate and eloquent poems of a more broadly public re-imagination of our country and its history, beginning with her work of the mid 1980s. Rich has remained committed to the reconstruction of poetry’s place in public as well as private life, nationally and globally. From varied perspectives, accessible to the common reader as well as the specialist, the collection addresses Rich’s negotiation of the boundary between these public and private spheres and the potential of poetry as a revolutionary medium and alternate epistemology, a means, as the title expresses it, of recovery and regeneration. Rich has aimed always, as the last lines of her poem “Planetarium” (1968) have it, at “the relief of the body / and the reconstruction of the mind,” and this collection works to describe her effort to extend the reach of that healing motive across a continent and a culture. "In these eight keenly executed essays edited by William Waddell, we see Rich finally removing those “asbestos gloves” once used to handle sizzling political topics. Critics in this volume show Adrienne Rich struggling barehanded with changing poetic strategies, complex new subject positions and the relations of power and cultural practice in the constitution of history. Transformative cartographer of words and perceptions, Rich, as Waddell argues, outlines “a method for redefining American space,” remapping North American culture for the marginalized, the repressed and the resistant. Waddell’s collection celebrates the polyphony of politics and aesthetics in Rich’s work, shaping for the reader an ethical discourse intensively visible, for the first time, in volumes such as An Atlas of the Difficult World: Poems 1988-1991, but equally present throughout Rich’s prose and poetry." Book excerpt: The uproarious, bestselling true story of the world's most sought-after con man, immortalized by Leonardo DiCaprio in DreamWorks' feature film of the same name, from the author of Scam Me If You Can. Frank W. Abagnale, alias Frank Williams, Robert Conrad, Frank Adams, and Robert Monjo, was one of the most daring con men, forgers, imposters, and escape artists in history. In his brief but notorious criminal career, Abagnale donned a pilot's uniform and copiloted a Pan Am jet, masqueraded as the supervising resident of a hospital, practiced law without a license, passed himself off as a college sociology professor, and cashed over $2.5 million in forged checks, all before he was twenty-one. Known by the police of twenty-six foreign countries and all fifty states as "The Skywayman," Abagnale lived a sumptuous life on the lam—until the law caught up with him. Now recognized as the nation's leading authority on financial foul play, Abagnale is a charming rogue whose hilarious, stranger-than-fiction international escapades, and ingenious escapes-including one from an airplane-make Catch Me If You Can an irresistible tale of deceit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether Thersites in Homer’s Iliad, Wilfred Owen in “Dulce et Decorum Est,” or Allen Ginsberg in “Wichita Vortex Sutra,” poets have long given solitary voice against the brutality of war. The hasty cancellation of the 2003 White House symposium “Poetry and the American Voice” in the face of protests by Sam Hamill and other invited guests against the coming “shock and awe” campaign in Iraq reminded us that poetry and poets still have the power to challenge the powerful. Behind the Lines investigates American war resistance poetry from the Second World War through the Iraq wars. Rather than simply chronicling the genre, Philip Metres argues that this poetry gets to the heart of who is authorized to speak about war and how it can be represented. As such, he explores a largely neglected area of scholarship: the poet’s relationship to dissenting political movements and the nation. In his elegant study, Metres examines the ways in which war resistance is registered not only in terms of its content but also at the level of the lyric. He proposes that protest poetry constitutes a subgenre that—by virtue of its preoccupation with politics, history, and trauma—probes the limits of American lyric poetry. Thus, war resistance poetry—and the role of what Shelley calls unacknowledged legislators—is a crucial, though largely unexamined, body of writing that stands at the center of dissident political movements.

Book excerpt: LONGLISTED FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD “Nothing short of magic.” —Elizabeth Acevedo, New York Times bestselling author of The Poet X From the acclaimed poet featured on Forbes Africa’s “30 Under 30” list, this powerful novel-in-verse captures one girl, caught between cultures, on an unexpected journey to face the ephemeral girl she might have been. Woven through with moments of lyrical beauty, this is a tender meditation on family, belonging, and home. my mother meant to name me for her favorite flower its sweetness garlands made for pretty girls i imagine her yasmeen bright & alive & i ache to have been born her instead Nima wishes she were someone else. She doesn’t feel understood by her mother, who grew up in a different land. She doesn’t feel accepted in her suburban town; yet somehow, she isn't different enough to belong elsewhere. Her best friend, Haitham, is the only person with whom she can truly be herself. Until she can't, and suddenly her only refuge is gone. As the ground is pulled out from under her, Nima must grapple with the phantom of a life not chosen—the name her parents meant to give her at birth—Yasmeen. But that other name, that other girl, might be more real than Nima knows. And the life Nima wishes were someone else's. . . is one she will need to fight for with a fierceness she never knew she possessed.

Book excerpt: This is the first book in the series The Diary Of A Country Girl - a collection of inspirational readings designed to encourage and motivate you to walk out your purpose in Christ, by divulging certain truths, nuggets of wisdom and revelations I believe were given to me by the Holy Spirit through my own personal experiences. This book is designed to be an easy read. A quick read at lunchtime or on a bathroom break. A moment of serenity before a busy and challenging day. A breath of fresh air during the torrents of life. Each segment designed to uplift and motivate you, ending with supporting scripture and a challenge. A challenge that just might create avenues for further self-examination, devotion, decision and change. The kind of change that will allow you to feel the presence of God and desire to know Him more. If not, then I've failed miserably in what I was called to do. But still, I won't give up. I will do what I must do. So, in order to speak into your life and to encourage you, my life has to measure up. I have to be an example of what I'm saying. How can I guide you without knowing the way? How can I relate to you, to anyone, without the experience of knowing the change that is possible through God at work in my life? So, to give, I have to first receive. I cannot give anything except that which I possess. So I wait on God, and I pray, and I live expectantly. Because the revelations He gives brings life... and joy... and peace... and knowledge... and wisdom... and insight into the things that touch us the most. He is a loving God and He knows exactly what each of us needs.

Book excerpt: Oh Posterity! You will never know, how much it cost the present generation, to preserve your freedom! I hope you will make a good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in heaven, that I ever took half the pains to preserve it. --John Adams, April 26, 1777. Amidst the political divisions that exist today, many Americans believe the Founding Fathers would roll over in their graves if they saw what posterity did with their divine creation. Oh, Posterity! What Have You Done? explores what the Founding Fathers might say to us if given the opportunity in this piece of historical fiction. Is modern America anything close to what they intended? Have twenty-first-century Americans forgotten who they were and subsequently who we are? Have we lost our way, and what will it take to get us back on track and in the good graces of the Almighty? Follow God's new messenger, William Justice Freeman, as he is charged by Providence with the task of breathing new life into the founding generation's words in the hopes of saving the country. Starting on January 6, 2021, and ending on July 2, 2024--prior to an election that could be a turning point in the cause of human freedom--see what the Founders think of modern America as they are given the opportunity to live among us for three years, culminating in eight thought-provoking interviews with Mr. Freeman. Do they believe America can be saved? Why is individual free will so important to the Almighty? Are freedom and democracy synonymous, or has posterity forgotten what the principle of freedom even means? Can Americans regain a connection to the revolutionary generation and understand what they gave us some 250 years ago? Join William Freeman as he attempts to wake America up to its forgotten purpose in the world!
