Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homogeneous asymmetric catalysis offers reliable results and the possibility to 'tune' the catalysis on a rational basis. A pitfall, however, is that the separation of the catalyst from the starting material and products is difficult and often results in the loss of the catalytic material. Immobilization offers a potential solution for the user of enantioselective catalysts in industrial processes and laboratories. Heterogeneous catalysis allows continuous operations, recycling of the catalyst, and an easy separation of the reaction products, reducing both waste and costs. Chemists in academia and industry will welcome this careful selection of topics in this handbook that provides readers with practical and detailed information about the technical requirements for the immobilization of chiral catalysts, their application in synthesis, and methods for recycling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An enzyme is a protein, or protein complex, that catalyses a chemical reaction. Like any catalyst, enzymes work by lowering the activation energy of a reaction, thus allowing the reaction to proceed to its steady state or completion much faster than it otherwise would; the enzyme remains unaltered by the completed reaction and can therefore continue catalysis. An immobilized enzyme is an enzyme attached to an inert, insoluble material-such as calcium alginate. This can provide increased resistance to changes in conditions such as pH or temperature. It also lets enzymes be held in place throughout the reaction, following which they are easily separated from the products and may be used again-a far more efficient process and so is widely used in industry for enzyme catalysed reactions. An alternative to enzyme immobilization is whole cell immobilization. Carrier matrices for enzyme immobilisation by adsorption and covalent binding must be chosen with care. The manufacture of high-valued products on a small scale may allow the use of relatively expensive supports and immobilisation techniques whereas these would not be economical in the large-scale production of low added-value materials. A substantial saving in costs occurs where the carrier may be regenerated after the useful lifetime of the immobilised enzyme. This book is simple protocols for the immobilization of enzymes and cells that could be useful for application at industrial scale, novel protocols for immobilization in the future, and new chemical reactors able to overcome the limitations of a number of immobilized derivatives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recoverable and Recyclable Catalysts There is continued pressure on chemical and pharmaceutical industries to reduce chemical waste and improve the selectivity and efficiency of synthetic processes. The need to implement green chemistry principles is a driving force towards the development of recoverable and recyclable catalysts. The design and synthesis of recoverable catalysts is a highly challenging interdisciplinary field combining chemistry, materials science engineering with economic and environmental objectives. Drawing on international research and highlighting recent developments, this book serves as a practical guide for both experts and newcomers to the field. Topics covered include: An introduction to the principles of catalyst recovery and recycling Catalysts on insoluble and soluble support materials Thermomorphic catalysts, self-supported catalysts and perfluorous catalytic systems The development of reusable organic catalysts Continuous flow and membrane reactors Each chapter combines principles with practical information on the synthesis of catalysts and strategies for catalyst recovery. The book concludes with a comparison of different catalytic systems, using case studies to illustrate the key features of each approach. Recoverable and Recyclable Catalysts is a valuable reference source for academic researchers and professionals from a range of pharmaceutical and chemical industries, particularly those working in catalysis, organic synthesis and sustainable chemistry.
