This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sheer wealth and dizzying diversity of Indian sculpture are celebrated in this second volume of the catalogue raisonn of the Los Angeles County Museum's collection. Nearly two hundred sculptures produced during eleven centuries are described. Of these, one-quarter of the pieces are part of the Nasli and Alice Heeramaneck Collection, while the remaining three-quarters have been acquired since 1970. This splendid collection, while not representing all the major styles of sculpture that flourished on the Indian subcontinent from 700-1900, is certainly one of the most comprehensive among American and European museums. Included are stone, metal, ivory, and wood sculptures from fourteen states and territories of India and from Pakistan and Afghanistan. Organized by regions--Central and Western, Eastern, and Southern India, and the Northwest--the catalogue contains detailed descriptions and illustrations of the 188 sculptures, many with details or multiple views, for a total of 259 illustrations--251 in duotone and halftone and 8 in color.

Book Synopsis South Indian Paintings by : British Museum
Download or read book South Indian Paintings written by British Museum and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Museum's collection of South Indian paintings consists of around 1000 items ranging from the 17th to the 20th century and representing a wide variety of themes and techniques. Only a very few examples from this major collection have been published before. In this book the collection will be catalogued in full, and 250 of the most important items will be reproduced in colour. The paintings will be described and listed according to the their topics (Hindu mythology; castes, trades and occupations; natural history drawings; painted narratives; India observed) and according to the medium on which they were executed (paper, cloth, leather, mica). Each section will begin with a brief introduction outlining the essential stylistic and iconographic features. Among this material are a number of highly interesting albums such as a set of 91 paintings depicting Hindu mythology, dating from the early decades of the 19th century. More unusual items are the long painted scrolls from Andhra illustrating local mythological narratives, the painted cloths from Tamil Nadu depicting the Ramayana epic, and paintings on paper used by the storytellers of northern Karnataka.

Download or read book Indian Art at Delhi, 1903 written by George Watt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 790 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Art at Delhi, 1903: Being the Offical Catalogue of the Delhi Exhibition, 1902-1903 Location. - Exhibits in Class I - Metal Wares extend from right to left, along the entire length of the Main Gallery, but Division 1 has been placed on the extreme right and Division 6 on the extreme left, in order to admit of the Gold and Silver Wares being located in the centre of the space devoted to the class, and hence on the right and left of the great transept. It is in this great transept that exhibits in Class X - Fine Arts (such as sculpture, painting, book illumination, etc.) are set out. It Will thus be observed that the system on which the divisions in Class I have been assorted, and which has been followed in locating the divisions in the other classes as well, brings the most highly artistic goods of the Metal Wares, as also of each of the other classes, into the centre of the gallery and thus into juxtaposition with the Fine Arts.
