Book Synopsis American Drawings and Watercolors in the Metropolitan Museum of Art by : Kevin J. Avery
Download or read book American Drawings and Watercolors in the Metropolitan Museum of Art written by Kevin J. Avery and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2002 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Metropolitan Museum began acquiring American drawings and watercolors in 1880, just ten years after its founding. Since then it has amassed more than 1,500 works executed by American artists during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in watercolor, pastel, chalk, ink, graphite, gouache, and charcoal. This volume documents the draftsmanship of more than 150 known artists before 1835 and that of about 60 unidentified artists of the period. It includes drawings and watercolors by such American masters as John Singleton Copley, John Trumbull, John Vanderlyn, Thomas Cole, Asher Brown Durand, George Inness, and James Abbott McNeill Whistler. Because the 504 works illustrate such a wide range of media, techniques, and styles, this publication is a veritable history of American drawing from the eighteenth through most of the nineteenth century."--Metropolitan Museum of Art website.

Book Synopsis The Complete Catalogue of Known and Documented Work by William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) by : Ronald G. Pisano
Download or read book The Complete Catalogue of Known and Documented Work by William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) written by Ronald G. Pisano and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first in a beautiful four-volume complete catalogue of all known works by the beloved American artist William Merritt Chase A perennial favorite of museum visitors, the works of William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) embody the quintessential characteristics of American Impressionism: outdoor landscapes, a colorful palette, and an energetic brushstroke. He was also a portrait painter of the first rank, a master of still life, a renowned teacher, and a leader of artists' societies. This gorgeous book, the first of a four-volume definitive catalogue, features Chase's stunning paintings in pastel, which constitute a major and previously understudied body of work by the artist; monotypes; painted tiles and plates; watercolors; and prints. Reconstructing Chase's oeuvre is a daunting task, as the artist left few records of any kind, and no documentation of his individual works exists. Furthermore, Chase's paintings and pastels have been forged in great numbers throughout the years, and many of these works still surface on the art market. Making this long-awaited volume even more valuable is a list of every known exhibition of Chase's work during the artist's lifetime, selected examples of major post-1917 exhibitions, and an essay on Chase's innovative pastel technique.

Book Synopsis Citizen Spectator by : Wendy Bellion
Download or read book Citizen Spectator written by Wendy Bellion and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this richly illustrated study, the first book-length exploration of illusionistic art in the early United States, Wendy Bellion investigates Americans' experiences with material forms of visual deception and argues that encounters with illusory art shaped their understanding of knowledge, representation, and subjectivity between 1790 and 1825. Focusing on the work of the well-known Peale family and their Philadelphia Museum, as well as other Philadelphians, Bellion explores the range of illusions encountered in public spaces, from trompe l'oeil paintings and drawings at art exhibitions to ephemeral displays of phantasmagoria, "Invisible Ladies," and other spectacles of deception. Bellion reconstructs the elite and vernacular sites where such art and objects appeared and argues that early national exhibitions doubled as spaces of citizen formation. Within a post-Revolutionary culture troubled by the social and political consequences of deception, keen perception signified able citizenship. Setting illusions into dialogue with Enlightenment cultures of science, print, politics, and the senses, Citizen Spectator demonstrates that pictorial and optical illusions functioned to cultivate but also to confound discernment. Bellion reveals the equivocal nature of illusion during the early republic, mapping its changing forms and functions, and uncovers surprising links between early American art, culture, and citizenship.

Book Synopsis Arthur Lismer, Visionary Art Educator by : Angela N. Grigor
Download or read book Arthur Lismer, Visionary Art Educator written by Angela N. Grigor and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2002-05-21 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthur Lismer, well-known member of the Group of Seven, was also one of Canada's most innovative educators. Using previously untapped correspondence and papers as well as interviews with Lismer's teaching colleagues, child students, and art students, Angela Nairne Grigor examines Lismer's Arts and Crafts Movement background in his native England, the evolution of the humanistic ideas and ideals that guided his work as both an artist and a teacher, and his international influence as an educator. She gives a vivid portrait of his approach to teaching in an illustrious fifty-year career that took him from Toronto to Halifax, Montreal, New York, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, and during which he played a pivotal role in the development of some of Canada's most important art schools and museums. Lismer pioneered new progressive ideas in art education through his work with children as educational supervisor at the Art Gallery of Toronto and, later, at Montreal's Museum of Fine Arts. In exploring Lismer's development as an educator, Grigor traces the history of art education in twentieth-century Canada and charts changing attitudes towards children and art. Lismer emerges as an artist with a social conscience who captured the hearts and minds of the thousands who heard him speak or were fortunate enough to have been his students. Arthur Lismer, Visionary Art Educator includes over a dozen drawings from Lismer's teaching and lecture notes that have not been previously published.
