Book Synopsis The Founding of Thomas Jefferson's University by : John A. Ragosta
Download or read book The Founding of Thomas Jefferson's University written by John A. Ragosta and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Established in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson, the University of Virginia was known as "The University" throughout the South for most of the nineteenth century, and today it stands as one of the premier universities in the world. This volume provides an in-depth look at the founding of the University and, in the process, develops new and important insights into Jefferson’s contributions as well as into the impact of the University on the history of higher education. The contributors depict the students who were entering higher education in the early republic--their aspirations, their juvenile and often violent confrontations with authority, and their relationships with enslaved workers at the University. Contributors then turn to the building of the University, including its unique architectural plan as an "Academical Village" and the often-hidden role of African Americans in its construction and day-to-day life. The next set of essays explore various aspects of Jefferson’s intellectual vision for the University, including his innovative scheme for medical education, his dogmatic view of the necessity of a "republican" legal education, and the detailed plans for the library by Jefferson, one of America’s preeminent bibliophiles. The book concludes by considering the changing nature of education in the early nineteenth century, in particular the new focus on research and discovery, in which Jefferson, again, played an important role. Providing a fascinating and important look at the development of one of America’s oldest and most preeminent educational institutions, this book provides yet another perspective from which to appreciate the extraordinary contributions of Jefferson in the development of the new nation.

Book Synopsis How Constitutional Rights Matter by : Adam Chilton
Download or read book How Constitutional Rights Matter written by Adam Chilton and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does constitutionalizing rights improve respect for those rights in practice? Drawing on statistical analyses, survey experiments, and case studies from around the world, this book argues that enforcing constitutional rights is not easy, but that some rights are harder to repress than others. First, enshrining rights in constitutions does not automatically ensure that those rights will be respected. For rights to matter, rights violations need to be politically costly. But this is difficult to accomplish for unconnected groups of citizens. Second, some rights are easier to enforce than others, especially those with natural constituencies that can mobilize for their enforcement. This is the case for rights that are practiced by and within organizations, such as the rights to religious freedom, to unionize, and to form political parties. Because religious groups, trade unions and parties are highly organized, they are well-equipped to use the constitution to resist rights violations. As a result, these rights are systematically associated with better practices. By contrast, rights that are practiced on an individual basis, such as free speech or the prohibition of torture, often lack natural constituencies to enforce them, which makes it easier for governments to violate these rights. Third, even highly organized groups armed with the constitution may not be able to stop governments dedicated to rights-repression. When constitutional rights are enforced by dedicated organizations, they are thus best understood as speed bumps that slow down attempts at repression. An important contribution to comparative constitutional law, this book provides a comprehensive picture of the spread of constitutional rights, and their enforcement, around the world.

Book Synopsis A Time for Moderation by : C. Matthew West
Download or read book A Time for Moderation written by C. Matthew West and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Few decades brought more transformational change to Virginia's political landscape than the 1960s. Unprecedented legal and demographic developments disrupted conservatives' long-entrenched control of both the Democratic Party and of state government, ushering in a new, dynamic, and competitive era in the Old Dominion. Few Virginia politicians enjoyed more success during this tumultuous time than J. Sargeant Reynolds. The youngest Virginian to win election as lieutenant governor, 'Sarge' Reynolds was at the forefront of a new generation of Democratic leaders who sought to modernize their party and state policy. His electoral future seemed limitless, until his life was tragically cut short by an inoperable brain tumor, two years into his term as lieutenant governor. Though short-lived, Reynolds's career in elected office coincided with - and helped shape - some of the most consequential political developments in twentieth-century Virginia. His story, historic in its own right, helps to illuminate the forces that reshaped the Democratic Party - and the entire commonwealth - at this important juncture."--Back cover.
