Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Paintings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art Soon after, negotiations were entered into which consummated in the purchase of a collection of pictures, consisting chiefly of specimens of the Dutch and Flemish Schools, but containing also important works of Italian, French, Spanish and English masters. It became necessary to make immediate preparation for the custody and exhibition of these paintings. The Trustees took accordingly a lease for two years from May, 1871, of the building known as No. 681 Fifth Avenue, which, although too small for their purpose, was the most available habitation they could find. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authoritative compendium on the main masterpieces of Frank Gehry, including 480 illustrations and photographs, produced in collaboration with Cahiers d’Art. Experimenting with a range of materials from cheap mass-produced items to space-age titanium, and using 3D computer modeling as an architectural tool, Frank Gehry’s buildings are remarkable and surprising, united by the sense of movement they convey. His projects flow, curve, bend, and crumple in novel and unexpected ways, subverting traditional building norms. From his own home in Santa Monica to the undulating Beekman Tower in New York, from the shining curves of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao to the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, and his most recent construction, Luma Arles, Gehry has left his indelible mark on the history of architectural design. Forty of the renowned architect’s most remarkable works are presented by architect and critic Jean-Louis Cohen, alongside views of the interiors and exteriors of each building. This tour includes many of Gehry’s works throughout the United States and abroad, such as the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the one-of-a-kind “Binoculars Building” in Los Angeles, and the beloved “Dancing House” in Prague.

Book excerpt: Published for Jordan Casteel's major New Museum show, Within Reach surveys her paintings exploring the nuances of Black subjectivity In her large-scale oil paintings, New York-based artist Jordan Casteel (born 1989) takes up questions of Black subjectivity and representation by examining the gestures, spaces and forms of nonverbal communication that underpin portraiture. "There is a certain amount of mindfulness that it requires ... to be present with someone in a moment." she explains. "I've always had an inclination towards seeing people who might be easily be unseen." Published for Casteel's first solo museum exhibition in New York, this volume brings together 40 large-scale paintings from throughout her career, including works from the celebrated series Visible Man (2013-14) and Nights in Harlem (2017), along with recent cropped "subway paintings" and portraits of her students at Rutgers University-Newark. Whether depicting former classmates from Yale, nude and in serene repose; street vendors near her home in Harlem; anonymous New Yorkers huddled on the subway; or her own students, posed largely in domestic interiors among their personal belongings, she explores how both public and private spheres can serve as frames for an inner life. This generously illustrated, oversized publication honors the larger-than-life scale of the artist's work. It is the first comprehensive monographic publication on Casteel's work and includes texts by Dawoud Bey, Amanda Hunt and Lauren Haynes, and conversations conducted with the artist by Massimiliano Gioni and Thelma Golden.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of Works of Art: With Illustrations and Descriptions; Also, Views of the Summer and Winter Homes, Etc It is equally difficult to describe a painting. Words can merely hint at color, and can only direct attention to the skill, genius, and inspiration of the artist. A fine picture is a product, not alone of technical power, but also of thought, imagination, and feeling, and the ready comprehension of these qualities requires an actual study of the picture itself. The most that can be done by photographic copy and descriptiontogether is to incite the imagination to complete What pen and camera necessarily leave undone. These views are made by the phototype process, and, being printed in ink Will last as long as any printed matter. Apart from the unavoidable defects of photography, they are creditable and satisfactory. Mr. F. Gutekunst, of this city, deserves a word of commendation for his skill in taking them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of Paintings An alphabetical arrangement by the names of artists, or by schools where the artists are unknown, is followed in this book. In the attempt to solve the problem of numbering a rapidly growing collection of paintings, the experiment has been made here of adapting the C. A. Cutter system, long in use in libraries. To use the catalogue it is not necessary to be familiar with the system of numbering, but for those who may be interested an explanation follows. It consists of a combination of letters and numbers, composed of the initial letter of the author's name followed by numbers that represent the succeeding letters of the same, so that additional entries can be inserted without disturbing the sequence of the letters or the numerals. By this system the number, instead of being an arbitrary tag affixed to the picture, has a logical connection with it and its place in the catalogue, and the usual finding list is done away with. The plan has the advantage of being thoroughly logical and flexible, and the compilers of this catalogue believe that it will be considered an improvement over the prevailing methods, at least for the purpose of this collection. The C. A. Cutter Two-Figure Author Table, which has been used in numbering this collection, calls for one letter for names beginning with a consonant (except S) and two for names beginning with vowels or S. Thus Ab1 is Abbey and R28 is Rembrandt. When it is necessary to make a close classification an additional number is used. Thus M61 is Millais, J. E.; M611 Miller, C. H.; M612 Miller, R. E.; M613 Millet, F. D.; M614 Millet, J. F. The number after the dash indicates the order of acquisition of works by an artist. Thus R28-1 is the first painting by Rembrandt acquired by the Museum; R28-2 is the second; and so on. Works lent begin with 51 after the dash. Thus, following the nine paintings by Stuart owned by the Museum come the Stuarts lent, which begin with St9-51. To indicate that a picture is the work of an unknown artist of a certain school, a capital S is added. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
