Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Minerals, Ores, Rocks and Fossils of the Pacific Coast Exhibition: At the Paris Coast Exposition of 1878 The California Commission for the Paris Exposition of 1878 had its origin in a public meeting of citizens, which issued an address to the people of California, setting forth the advantages to the State that would result from an exhibit of the various agricultural, mechanical, mineral and art productions of the Pacific Coast. Committees in the different departments were appointed, who assumed their duties cheerfully. Much progress was made by these committees. The Commission was warmly supported by the Press, and was popular throughout the State. It was supposed that all its varied resources would be shown in such a manner as to place California in the position it deserves before the world. As the work progressed, it was found that a considerable sum of money would be required to carry out the plans of the various committees, and it was decided to make an application to the Legislature of the State, then in session, for the necessary funds. Much time was lost while awaiting the action of that body. The Legislature declining to make the appropriation asked, it was found to be too late to provide other means for completing the work. Considerable progress having been made in the Mineral Department, and funds being generously placed at its disposal by a public spirited citizen, it was decided to make the collection as complete as possible, and to send it forward. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catalogue of Minerals and Synonyms This catalogue was commenced in the year 1867 for use in arranging the collections of the School of Mines of Columbia College, but after many months' labor, when the work was nearly completed up to that date, it was abandoned on account Of the press of other duties. The collections have since that time increased to such an extent that the necessity of a Museum catalogue has impressed itself upon me many times, but other duties prevented my taking it up. In the last year, however, having occasion to make some investigations and finding it almost impossible to get at the different synonyms of the various min erals on account of the imperfections of the indices of the various works, the work was taken up again and finished. It was found that the progress of the science since 1867 had been so great that the work previously done had to be altogether abandoned, so that all that is left of it is the general plan. It is hardly to be hoped that this catalogue is without errors, or that every name which has been published has been found. There are, however, several thousand more names contained in it than in any other published index. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Commercial Minerals of California: With Notes on Their Uses, Distribution, Properties, Ores, Field Tests, and Preparation for Market The headquarters of the California State Mining Bureau are located on the third floor of the Ferry Building, San Francisco, and consist of the administrative offices of the State Mineralogist. State Supervisor of Petroleum and Gas, Library, Mineral Museum, and other offices necessary for carrying on the work of the bureau. Field branches have been established at the following points: Los Angeles (512 Union League Building), Santa Paula, Santa Maria, Bakersfield, Taft, Coalinga, East Auburn, and Redding. The institution is supported by legislative appropriation, and is under the direction of Fletcher Hamilton, State Mineralogist. Its purpose is to promote the interests of the mineral industry in California in every possible way. This object is accomplished by various means, briefly outlined as follows: Publications. Bulletins, reports, and maps, covering all phases of the mining industry of the state, compiled as a result of the work of mining engineers and geologists in the field, are available for reference and distribution upon application at this office. It is possible to distribute some of these publications free of charge, but for those more elaborate and detailed a nominal price is asked. (See list of publications, page 117.) General Information Bureau. An information desk is maintained at the main office of the Bureau in the Ferry Building, and the entire staff of assistants is at the service of the public at all times in this regard. All personal and written inquiries relative to any phase of mining or the occurrence of mineral substances in California, are given careful and immediate attention. Library. The Bureau Library contains over 5000 volumes of selected works including government, state and individual reports on mines and mining and allied technical subjects, as well as files of the leading technical magazines of the world, together with the current copies of the local papers from the majority of the mining camps of California. Here may also be found for reference county maps, topographical sheets, geological folios, etc. A reading room is maintained in conjunction with the Library, and both are open to the public daily from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., except Sundays and holidays; and from 9 a.m. to 12 m. Saturdays. Laboratory. Samples limited to three at one time, of any mineral found in the state, may be sent to the Bureau for identification, and the same will be classified free of charge. Book excerpt: In 1866 William P. Blake, professor of mineralogy, geology and mining at the College of California, parent to the University of California, Berkeley, prepared as a report to the State Board of Agriculture an "Annotated Catalog of the Principal Mineral Species Hitherto Recognized in California and the adjoining States and Territories. " Seventy-seven mineral species appeared on the list. It was the beginning of a series that became known as Minerals of California. This first catalog was followed in 1884 and 1886 by a list of 135 species compiled by H. G. Hanks, the first state mineralogist of California, and pub· lished in the fourth and sixth State Mining Bureau reports. Then beginning in 1914 with a volume prepared by A. S. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annotated Catalogue of the Principal Mineral Species Hitherto Recognized in California: And the Adjoining States and Territories; Bring a Report to the California State Board of Agriculture Dear Sir: - I send you for your report a list, with notes, of the principal minerals and mineral localities Of the State, and of portions of the adjoining States and Territories. It was my intention to make this list complete before publication, but the time at my disposal since the Board honored me with the appointment has been so limited that 1 am compelled to send it to you conscious of many omissions and imperfections, which I hope to remedy in the future. This list is not designed to be of very direct economical value, but is intended rather to show the nature and distribution of our minerals, and to help to arouse an interest in the science of mineralogy among our people. HE mining interests oi_ the State of California are so diversified, and the industry is extended over so wide an area, that it is difficult to describe the conditions which exist without using many pages of printed matter. For this reason it has been considered proper, in this pamphlet, to give merely a record of results, which will show in plain figures what is being accomplished by the miners of the State. This record shows that some forty-four mineral substances are being exploited, the annual valuation of which is now and increasing at the rate of about yearly, as capital is invested and more mines are opened. The older mines, too, having been well developed and equipped, are increasing their annual output, and thus also proving their permanency and value with depth. The climatic conditions are favorable to mining operations throughout the State, and means of transportation have been so improved as to greatly lessen costs of supplies, etc. There are abundant opportunities for the safe and profitable investment of capital in the various branches of the industry, as numerous claims which have been located have never been properly developed or equipped, their owners lacking the necessary means. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of Minerals, With Their Formulas, Etc: Prepared for the Smithsonian Institution A table of the symbols used, with illustrations of the meaning of the formulae, are given on p. Vii., and on p. Ix. Will be found a table relating to the systems of crystallization. In the first column are the simple forms from which all the others, of the same system, are derived; in the second the description of the axes of these simple forms, and in the others the nomenclature that has been adopted by the authors whose names stand at the head of the column. The axes of a crystal are imaginary lines drawn through its centre and about which it is symmetrical. It has been found most convenient to refer to the systems of crystallization by the numbers which have been placed on the left hand of the table.
