Book excerpt: Willtown was founded in the late 17th century on the banks of the South Edisto River, but the movement of the Willtown Church in the 1760s to another location marked the demise of the town. Hugh C. Lane Jr. encouraged The Charleston Museum in its research in and around the Willtown area, asking the question, "Why did Willtown fail?" "Our serendipitous discovery of James Stobo's rice plantation a mile from Willtown revealed a site remarkable in its pristine preservation, the clarity of its stratigraphic record, the number and types of artifacts recovered, and in the complexity of its architectural detail."--Introduction, p. 1.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The people who lived in England before the First World War now inhabit a realm of yellow photographs. Theirs is a world fast fading from ours, yet they do not appear overly distant. Many of us can remember them as being much like ourselves. Nor is it too late for us to encounter them so intimately that we might catch ourselves worrying that we have invaded their privacy. Digging up their refuse is like peeping through the keyhole. How far off are our grandparents in reality when we can sniff the residues of their perfume, cough medicines, and face cream? If we want to know what they bought in the village store, how they stocked the kitchen cupboard, and how they fed, pampered, and cared for themselves there is no better archive than a rubbish tip within which each object reveals a story. A simple glass bottle can reveal what people were drinking, how a great brand emerged, or whether an inventor triumphed with a new design. An old tin tells us about advertising, household chores, or foreign imports, and even a broken plate can introduce us to the children in the Staffordshire potteries, who painted in the colors of a robin, crudely sketched on a cheap cup and saucer. In this highly readable and delightfully illustrated little book Tom Licence reveals how these everyday minutiae, dug from the ground, contribute to the bigger story of how our great grandparents built a throwaway society from the twin foundations of packaging and mass consumption and illustrates how our own throwaway habits were formed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the seventeenth century, the promise of land ownership--a new beginning--enticed many immigrants to leave Europe, the West Indies and even New England and brave the harsh conditions of frontier life in Carolina. The stories of these intrepid colonists are elusive, as few records of their daily lives have survived the more than three hundred years of history that separate the present-day inhabitants of South Carolina from their forebears. Featuring a compilation of abstracts pulled from the record book of the Register of the Province of South Carolina from 1675 to 1696, this book sheds light on the lives of these early colonists. Published here for the first time, these entries provide an in-depth look at a variety of Carolina's oldest records: indentures from the Lords Proprietors, letters of attorney, partnerships, and early land records that include grants and deeds to lots in Charles Towne. Continuing their exhaustive and meticulous research in this second volume, editors Susan Baldwin Bates and Harriott Cheves Leland offer historians, researchers, scholars and family genealogists an exciting and essential means of more completely understanding the early culture, life and history of the land that became South Carolina.

Book excerpt: "Tin-glazed earthenware has been made in Europe since the 15th century. In Britain, floor tiles and drug pots were made in Aldgate, London in the 16th century by immigrant potters from the Low Countries. In the early 17th century, factories making dishes and other wares were set up in London close to the River Thames. Their products were initially much influenced by Chinese porcelain as well as by Italian maiolica. Manufacture spread from London to centres such as Bristol, Liverpool and Dublin. Known as 'gally ware' in the 17th century, this type of pottery has come to be known as 'delftware' from the Dutch town of Delft which was renowned for its manufacture ... The British Museum collection of delftware, which was established in the later part of the 19th century, is one of the finest in the world. It is especially notable for the number of pieces bearing dates and for those which document historical personages and events. This beautifully illustrated book will feature more than 140 items from this extensive collection and include pieces which have never before been fully described or published in colour."--Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English dry-bodied stoneware was the ultimate ceramic expression of the neoclassical wave which erupted in England and on the Continent in the mid-eighteenth century. Initially basalt commanded the scene, with its imposing black stoneware forms imitating Greek vases. However, it was Wedgwood's invention of the jasper body which was to be the tour de force associated with his name. Wedgwood's jasper vases, purchased by gentry and nobility alike, were soon imitated by a myriad of potters. This book is the first to explore the vast subject of English dry-bodied stoneware with discussions on the antecedents of the eighteenth century neoclassical wares, the red stonewares of the seventeenth century, as well as the other bodies produced by Wedgwood and his contemporaries: caneware, white felspathic stoneware and, of course, the flagship of the Wedgwood name, jasper. The authors have, for the first time, utilised Wedgwood's surviving sales records from 1774-1794 and these have made it possible to allow
