Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Music in Canada by : Helmut Kallmann
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Music in Canada written by Helmut Kallmann and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 1524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its initial publication in 1981, Encyclopedia of Music in Canada has been recognized as a monumental record of the music of a country, an indispensable guide to all kinds of music: popular, folk, religious, concert, and other forms. The second edition advances this landmark work into the last decade of the twentieth century. It provides more than 3700 articles in all, with more than 500 pictures of people, places, scores, concert programs, and sheet music. Compiled by scores of experts, the Encyclopedia presents our musical heritage in all its aspects: historical, educational, critical, administrative, and commercial. Essays on modern composers and performers are accompanied by critical evaluations and complete discographies. The revisions in this edition reveal the vibrancy of the music scene in Canada today. A whole generation of new performers and composers emerged over the decade between the first and second editions. New technologies have had a profound impact; so have demographic changes and a heightened awareness of commercial realizties. These and other influences are reflected in 820 new entries, and in the expansion of such entries as ethnomusicology and of the discography sections throughout the Encyclopedia. Some 200 earlier entries have been eliminated, others condensed. Access throughout has been improved. The Encyclopedia of Music in Canada explores the nation's music in all its richness and variety, from school bands to rock superstar, from community music festivals to the great concert halls. It describes the development of music as it has been and is studied, performed, and composed throughout Canada.
Download or read book A Critic Writes written by Reyner Banham and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few twentieth-century writers on architecture and design have enjoyed the renown of Reyner Banham. Born and trained in England and a U.S. resident starting in 1976, Banham wrote incisively about American and European buildings and culture. Now readers can enjoy a chronological cross-section of essays, polemics, and reviews drawn from more than three decades of Banham's writings. The volume, which includes discussions of Italian Futurism, Adolf Loos, Paul Scheerbart, and the Bauhaus as well as explorations of contemporary architecture by Frank Gehry, James Stirling, and Norman Foster, conveys the full range of Banham's belief in industrial and technological development as the motor of architectural evolution. Banham's interests and passions ranged from architecture and the culture of pop art to urban and industrial design. In brilliant analyses of automobile styling, mobile homes, science fiction films, and the American predilection for gadgets, he anticipated many of the preoccupations of contemporary cultural studies. Los Angeles, the city that Banham commemorated in a book and a film, receives extensive attention in essays on the Santa Monica Pier, the Getty Museum, Forest Lawn cemetery, and the ubiquitous freeway system. Eminently readable, provocative, and entertaining, this book is certain to consolidate Banham's reputation among architects and students of contemporary culture. For those acquainted with his writing, it offers welcome surprises as well as familiar delights. For those encountering Banham for the first time, it comprises the perfect introduction.
Book Synopsis Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Mental Retardation, and Geriatric Psychiatry by : P. Pichot
Download or read book Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Mental Retardation, and Geriatric Psychiatry written by P. Pichot and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the World Psychiatric Association is to coordinate the activities of its Member Societies on a world-wide scale and to advance enquiry into the etiology, pathology, and treatment of mental illness. To further this purpose, the Association organizes mono- or multithematic Regional Symposia in different parts of the world twice a year, and World Congresses dealing with all individual fields of psychiatry once every five or six years. Between these meetings the continuation of the Association's scientific work is assured through the activities of its specialty sections, each covering an important field of psychiatry. The programs of the World Congresses reflect on the one hand the intention to present the coordinating functions of the Association and on the other to open a broad platform for a free exchange of views. Thus, the VII World Congress of Psychiatry, held in Vienna from July 11 to 16, 1983, was composed of two types of scientific events - those structured by the Association and those left to the initiative of the participants. The first type comprised Plenary Sessions, planned by the Scientific Program Committee, and Section Symposia, organized by the WPA sections; the second embraced Free Symposia, free papers, video sessions, and poster presentations prepared by the participants. Altogether, 10 Plenary Sessions, 52 Section Symposia, and 105 Free Symposia took place, and 78 free papers and poster sessions and 10 video sessions were held.
