Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Periodical Publications: Including the Serial Publications of Societies and Governments, in the Library of University College London This catalogue contains the titles of all the works in the College Library which are issued in a serial form. Some publications are included which are not, strictly speaking, issued as periodicals (e.g. the Publications of the Ray Society), and there are a few others the right of which to be classed as periodicals is doubtful: but in both these cases it has been thought better to include something which may not be a serial rather than to exclude a work which may be looked for in a catalogue of periodicals. Every periodical is entered under the first word (articles only excepted) in the title, and the entries are arranged strictly in alphabetical order. The only exceptions to this rule are the entries commencing with the word 'Mitteilungen' or 'Mittheilungen, ' in which case the discrepancy in spelling has been ignored. Where the title of a periodical changes, the second and any following titles are entered immediately after the original one, cross-references being made from the later titles to the number under which the periodical is catalogued. Cross-references from the names of editors have been made in those cases where the journal is usually known by the editor's name. Of Direction has decided to issue a second volume. The present volume contains references to all new books received between June, 1900, and December, 1902, and also to periodicals, to the files of which there have been accessions. The present volume, like Vol. 1, contains the Classified Index only, the Author and Subject Indexes being available for consultation in the beading-room. Naturally there have not been accessions in every subdivision, but for convenience the whole classification is reproduced in the Table of Contents and Index; absence of page numbers for any subdivision indicates that no new books have been added. The pages containing the List showing Classification of Special Subjects, Explanatory Notes, and Abbreviations, are also reproduced from Vol. I. He began this work immediately upon his appointment to office, and has only to regret now the unavoidable delay which has attended its publication. He fully realizes the many imperfections of the work - due in part to the manner of publication, but in a larger degree to inexperience - but still ventures to hope that he has, in some measure, at least, accomplished his desire to produce a work which shall be of great assistance to persons consulting this library. It will be seen that the work is divided into two parts: Part I. Synthetical A., Catalogue of the Systematic Works; B., Catalogue of the Periodical Publications, - wherein these works are arranged in alphabetical order, according to their author or title, and without reference to subjects and Part II., analytical: wherein the Systematic Works and Periodical Publications are classified with reference to subjects. Part I. B. Will be found to include a copious Index, in which have been in serted many abbreviated titles, under which some of the more prominent periodicals are at times quoted. Part II. Will be found to include a copious Index, the typographical arrangement of which will indicate clearly whether the reference be to a general heading, a sub-heading, or other.
