Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The previously untold story of the Special Vehicle Development Committee, better known as 'The Old Gang' or by the abbreviation 'TOG'. These were the men who were mainly responsible for the creation of the British tanks in WW1. Men like Sir Albert Stern, Sir William Tritton, Sir Harry Ricardo, and Major Walter Wilson. At the outbreak of WW2, they were given a new task, that of breaching the heaviest German defences, with a heavily armoured tank able to cross the worst mud soaked ground of Flanders. The SVDC managed in very short time to design more than one vehicle to accomplish this seemingly impossible task and built tanks bearing their acronym as TOG-1 and TOG-2. This book covers the development of both vehicles as well as several variations and other work such as an underwater tank and connections to the gigantic Cultivator machines of the Naval Land Equipment division. The work of the SVDC was conducted in secrecy with documents, photographs, and blueprints sent to various companies and people. Places where sadly since the war so much has been lost. This book was the culmination of several years of research by the author. A search which brought together archival information from as far afield as Canada, the USA, Australia, and the UK to tell the story of these incredible men and their incredible machines.

Book excerpt: Despite a long history of involvement in the design and production of firearms, the Birmingham firm of Webley & Scott is probably better known to the general public for its manufacture of airguns than for any other product. Until now, there has been no published reference that concentrates exclusively on the history and development of Webley air pistols. This book has been prepared to offer a comprehensive guide for all those interested in the subject and who appreciate the traditional British craftsmanship entailed. It embraces all models based upon the same initial patent, which were produced between the years 1924 and 1999, commencing with the original 'Mark 1' and progressing through twelve other models to the final 'Webley Tempest' introduced more than half a century later. In addition to the pistols themselves, there are sections of the book relating to pellet styles and various shooting accessories produced by the same company. The whole work is divided into twenty-two sections, the text being accompanied throughout with 226 original photographs and over 70 line illustrations, each of which has been prepared by the author.

Standish Manhattan's activities spanned the years 1855 to 1873--an exciting period in American firearms that witnessed the high development of the percussion revolver, its rapid decline in the post-Civil War years, and the emergence of metallic cartridge arms. Substantiated by original records, the author discusses Manhattan's four patents, the connection of the Manhattan .22 caliber revolvers with the early usage of the .22 long cartridges, a lawsuit between Smith & Wesson and Herman Boker & Company, as well as many other aspects of Manhattan's history. A serious work on an American maker, this book constitutes a significant contribution to firearms history and merits a place on the bookshelf of every arms collector and enthusiast.
