Book Synopsis The McGill University Collection of Greek and Roman Coins by : Michael Woloch
Download or read book The McGill University Collection of Greek and Roman Coins written by Michael Woloch and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This catalogue of The McGill University Collection of Greek and Roman Coins brings together reprints of three volumes. The Roman catalogue of Volume I is by D.H.E. Whitehead (1975). Volume I also contains a Roman Supplement by Vivien Law and a short history of the collection by John Sullivan. Volume II (1975), by Prof. Shlosser, lists the gold and silver ancient Greek coins. The third and last volume (1984), also by Prof. Shlosser, contains the ancient Greek (including Judean and Indian) bronze coins and the Greek Imperials. Some silver coins are present. In Volume III are a Supplement by Louise Cass-Conrad of the Roman coins not in Volume I and Corrigenda to Volumes I and II. The volumes are richly illustrated with plates. The published collection consists of 1,763 coins, almost equally divided between Greek and Roman. This combined catalogue is unusual because so few university coin collections have ever been fully catalogued and published and is outstanding on account of its diversity. One may say that nearly all time periods and mints are represented. Study of the catalogue will be repaid with knowledge of examples of most kinds of ancient Greek and Roman coinage. The McGill Collection will be of interest to numismatists, including collectors, dealers and museum curators, as well as to historians of the ancient world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of a Fine Collection of Greek, Hebrew, Roman, and Other Ancient Coins in Gold, Silver and Bronze, in Seven Coin Cabinets, and Large Iron Safe: Also, a Library of About Seventy Volumes of Choice and Rare Books on Coins, Many Folio and Quatro, With Plates, the Property of S. B. Schieffelin, to Be Sold Without Reserve at Auction by Messrs. Leavitt, at Clinton Hall, Astor Place We wish to call particular attention to the fact that the coins in this collection are to be sold in the evening, instead of the afternoon, as usual. We have made this change for the convenience of gentlemen who are unable to attend auctions held in the daytime, thereby giving all an opportunity of purchasing, and also of seeing what they buy. The coins will be on exhibition throughout the day in the salesroom. In regard to the condition of the various pieces, we can insure in tending purchasers at a distance that they have all been faithfully de scribed, and, in cases of the slightest doubt, the condition of the coins has, if anything, been rather under-estimated. Download or read book Catalogue of the Late Roman, Byzantine and Barbaric Coins in the Charles University Collection (364 - 1092 A.D.) written by Federico Gambacorta and published by Karolinum Press. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of ancient coins in the Charles University in its present state has existed since l945. Greek, Roman and other ancient coins were entrusted to the care of the Seminar for Ancient History and put together as one collection along with the antique coins of the original collection of the Czech University held by the Seminar. The present collection formed in this way contains about 4000 pieces, mostly in silver and bronze. Connecting the catalogue arrangement to research projects undertaken in the postgraduate studies enabled research efforts of Federico Gambacorta. His catalogue contains 243 coins (chronologically from Valentinian I, the minting of Western – and Eastern Roman Empires and some Byzantine coins). The author has been very thorough and exacting in his efforts by taking pictures of all the coins, which is a very useful, even indispensable apparatus of the volume.
