Book excerpt: Izzy Stone was a reporter, a radical, an idealist, a scholar and, it is clear, a writer whose insights have more than stood the test of time. More than fifteen years after his death, this collection of his work from I.F. Stone's Weekly and elsewhere is astonishing in its relevance to our age, addressing the clash between national security and individual liberty, the protection of minorities, economic fairness, social justice, and the American military abroad. The core of Stone's genius was his newsletter, I.F. Stone's Weekly, published from the mid-1950s to the early 1970s. His meticulous dissection of the news was unsurpassed, a direct descendent of the great pamphleteers like Thomas Paine, and a forerunner to the best of today's political blogs. Stone's brilliant, investigative reporting; his wonderful, impassioned style; and his commitment to his values all make this collection an inspiration, and a revelation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This wonderful collection is full of the witty anecdotes and stories told by and about Abraham Lincoln. Here's an example: SORRY FOR THE HORSES When President Lincoln heard of the Confederate raid at Fairfax, in which a brigadier-general and a number of valuable horses were captured, he gravely observed: "Well, I am sorry for the horses." "Sorry for the horses, Mr. President!" exclaimed the Secretary of War, raising his spectacles and throwing himself back in his chair in astonishment. "Yes," replied Mr. Lincoln, "I can make a brigadier-general in five minutes, but it is not easy to replace a hundred and ten horses."

This book was released on 1951 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The data presented in this report were obtained by North American Aviation, Inc., from an investigation conducted in the Southern California Cooperative Wind Tunnel. Tests were made over a range of Mach numbers from 0.300 to 0.883 to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of a semispan model of a 35 degree swept-back wing equipped with a leading-edge slat and to gain additional knowledge of the aerodynamic loads and automatic operation of the slat. Lift, drag, and pitching-moment characteristics of a model wing in the presence of a fuselage were measured as well as pressures acting on the slat in the retracted and the full-open positions. The pressure data were analyzed to ascertain the opening characteristics of the slat for two possible circular-arc slat tracks which could be used for automatic operation of the slat.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The A B C's of the Twenty-One Demands The purpose of this discussion of the. Twenty-one De mands by Japan upon China in 1915 is to visualize to the Americans the exact meaning of this curious phase of Oriental diplomacy in its relationship to the traditional American policy of the Open Door of Equal Opportunity ln the Far East. We have tried seriously by paraphrasing the Demands to show what they would have meant had they been applied to the United States instead of the Republic of China. Since the chief purposes back of the Conference on Limitation of Armament and Pacific Far Eastern Problems are in the re-establishment of the-doctrine of the open door and to obtain international recognition of the principle of the integrity of China, we hope that this booklet may be of interest in a true understanding of the subject. Other books in this series pertaining to the Conference which have recently been published are, The Shantung Case at the and America's Position on the Shantung Question. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For about 150 years, scholars have attempted to identify the language of the world's first alphabetic script, and to translate some of the inscriptions that use it. Until now, their attempts have accomplished little more than identifying most of the pictographic letters and translating a few of the Semitic words. With the publication of The World's Oldest Alphabet, a new day has dawned. All of the disputed letters have been resolved, while the language has been identified conclusively as Hebrew, allowing for the translation of 16 inscriptions that date from 1842 to 1446 BC. It is the author's reading that these inscriptions expressly name three biblical figures (Asenath, Ahisamach, and Moses) and greatly illuminate the earliest Israelite history in a way that no other book has achieved, apart from the Bible.
