Book excerpt: In 1940 the world was on a knife-edge. The hurricane of events that marked the opening of the Second World War meant that anything could happen. For the aggressors there was no limit to their ambitions; for their victims a new Dark Age beckoned. Over the next few months their fates would be determined. In Fateful Choices Ian Kershaw re-creates the ten critical decisions taken between May 1940, when Britain chose not to surrender, and December 1941, when Hitler decided to destroy Europe’s Jews, showing how these choices would recast the entire course of history.

Book Synopsis Pablo Picasso and Dora Maar by : Dr Enrique Mallen
Download or read book Pablo Picasso and Dora Maar written by Dr Enrique Mallen and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-12 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Pablo Picasso spotted Dora Maar at a cafe in January 1936 it is highly likely that she had come to his attention prior. As Brassaï, a Hungarian-French photographer, recalled, 'It was at Les Deux-Magots that, one day in autumn 1935, [he] met Dora. On an earlier day, he had already noticed the grave, drawn face of the young woman at a nearby table, the attentive look in her light-colored eyes, sometimes disturbing in its fixity. When Picasso saw her in the same cafe in the company of the surrealist poet Paul Éluard, who knew her, the poet introduced her to Picasso' (Brassaï, a.k.a. Gyula Halász, Conversations with Picasso [University of Chicago Press, 1999]). Tinged with a seductive mix of violence and dark eroticism, this first meeting has attained mythical status in the story of the artist's life. It reads like an unreal fantasy. A mysterious and feline beauty, which Man Ray had captured in the pictures he took of her, a companion of Georges Bataille, Dora was an accomplished photographer, close to the Surrealists revolutionary aesthetics. Picasso addressed her in French, which he assumed to be her language; she replied in Spanish, which she knew to be his. For the next decade, the painter would translate not just his fascination with the woman who had seduced him on the spot, but also his desire to escape the grip of someone who, for the first time, could intellectually aspire to be his equal. Dora would appear in his works as a female Minotaur, a Sphinx, a lunar goddess and a muse. Because of her intense artistic sensibility, her poetic gifts and her ability to participate in suffering, she was especially qualified to resonate Picasso's own inner torments during these troubled years.

Book Synopsis The Russian Orthodox Church, 1917-1948 by : Daniela Kalkandjieva
Download or read book The Russian Orthodox Church, 1917-1948 written by Daniela Kalkandjieva and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the remarkable story of the decline and revival of the Russian Orthodox Church in the first half of the twentieth century and the astonishing U-turn in the attitude of the Soviet Union’s leaders towards the church. In the years after 1917 the Bolsheviks’ anti-religious policies, the loss of the former western territories of the Russian Empire, and the Soviet Union’s isolation from the rest of the world and the consequent separation of Russian emigrés from the church were disastrous for the church, which declined very significantly in the 1920s and 1930s. However, when Poland was partitioned in 1939 between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, Stalin allowed the Patriarch of Moscow, Sergei, jurisdiction over orthodox congregations in the conquered territories and went on, later, to encourage the church to promote patriotic activities as part of the resistance to the Nazi invasion. He agreed a Concordat with the church in 1943, and continued to encourage the church, especially its claims to jurisdiction over émigré Russian orthodox churches, in the immediate postwar period. Based on extensive original research, the book puts forward a great deal of new information and overturns established thinking on many key points.

Book Synopsis William L. Rowe on Philosophy of Religion by : William L. Rowe
Download or read book William L. Rowe on Philosophy of Religion written by William L. Rowe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Rowe is one of the leading thinkers in contemporary philosophy of religion. Although he is best known for his contributions to the problem of evil, he has produced innovative and influential work across a wide array of subjects at the interface between philosophy and religion. He has, for example, written extensively on the existentialist theologian, Paul Tillich, on the challenging problem of divine freedom, and on the traditional arguments in support of the existence of God. His work in these areas is distinguished by its clarity, rigour, originality, and sensitivity towards the claims of his theistic opponents. Indeed, Rowe's work has played a pivotal role in the remarkable revival of analytic philosophy of religion since the 1970s. The present collection brings together for the first time Rowe's most significant contributions to the philosophy of religion. This diverse but representative selection of Rowe's writings will provide students, professional scholars as well as general readers with stimulating and accessible discussions on such topics as the philosophical theology of Paul Tillich, the problem of evil, divine freedom, arguments for the existence of God, religious experience, life after death, and religious pluralism.
Book Synopsis U-boat Tactics in World War II by : Gordon Williamson
Download or read book U-boat Tactics in World War II written by Gordon Williamson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-06-20 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the start of the war, German U-boat technology vastly out performed that possessed by the Allies, and under the pressure of the war continual development helped keep pace with wartime needs and improvements in anti-submarine weaponry. But it was not just the technology that had to change. German U-boat tactics evolved over time. Used in a variety of roles, from coastal patrolling through to the combined actions of convey-hunting 'wolf packs', the tactics used by U-Boats were diverse. This book analyses how the U-boats dominated the seas thanks to their innovative and daring tactical deployment, and how the cracking of the Enigma code effectively hamstrung them, greatly reducing their impact, a problem that even their advanced tactics failed to solve.
Book Synopsis American Warfare by : Jeffrey L Adkins
Download or read book American Warfare written by Jeffrey L Adkins and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2023-02-14 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am submitting this to you, dear reader, unsolicited, in hopes that you will incorporate it into any educating, planning, debating, and, of most importance, thinking that you might tend to do in the future when it comes to war and warfare for our once great nation, the United States of America. The war in Iraq, Operation Iraqi Freedom, was a tragedy and a travesty that is now almost surely fading from memory. It cannot be possible, but yet a man was campaigning for president with the promise "When I become President, I'll send troops back to Iraq!" That is what happens when a man who has never been to war or has never seen his sons go to war dreams of authority and power with the grasp of the reins of authority and power of the constitution in his hands. The Iraq War was wrong, and, like the Vietnam War, we should never again, willingly or unwittingly, allow wars like it to be part of our way of life. Please do not toss this out! If you feel that this document, American Warfare: 250 Things Americans Have Forgotten, Never Learned, and Ignored about War, is simply contemptuous and beneath your consideration, then simply pass it along to someone else whom you believe could make use of it. Someone, somehow, will consider that I am right.
