Book Synopsis Catalogue of Illuminated Manuscripts, Museum Plantin-Moretus, Antwerp by : Lieve Watteeuw

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the 16th to the 19th century, illuminated manuscripts were collected by the great printer-publisher Christophe Plantin and his Moretus successors and descendants. Ranging in date from the 9th to the mid-16th centuries, the manuscripts in the Museum Plantin-Moretus come from all over Europe, chiefly the Southern Netherlands and France with a significant representation of 15th-century Dutch illumination. More surprisingly, about a quarter of the collection comes from England: manuscripts of the 10th to 15th centuries that left the country with Catholic refugees. Alongside the acknowledged masterpieces and rarities, like the Bohemian Bible of 1402, are volumes that have remained virtually unknown, their aesthetic appeal and historical or textual interest often passing unnoticed in the absence of published reproductions. In this beautifully produced catalogue, each of the 102 volumes is illustrated in colour, with more extensive coverage of the 55 volumes with the most rewarding illumination. For the first time it is possible to gauge the extent and nature of this fascinating and under-explored collection, still housed in the building on the Vrijdagmarkt in Antwerp to which Plantin moved his famous sign of the Golden Compasses in 1576.
Book Synopsis Early Type Specimens in the Plantin-Moretus Museum by : John A. Lane
Download or read book Early Type Specimens in the Plantin-Moretus Museum written by John A. Lane and published by . This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Plantin-Moretus Museum has one of the world's richest collections of type specimens, many surviving nowhere else. They include types by Garamont, Granjon, Van den Keere, Briot, Van Dyck, Kis, Fournier, Rosart, Gille, Didot and many other masters from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century. Since the Plantin-Moretus printing office acquired most of the specimens when new, moreover, the collection as a whole tells a story in a way that collections assembled piecemeal in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries cannot. Finally, the Museum's archives help to document the origins of many specimens. This first detailed catalogue of the Museum's specimens reports the styles and sizes of type shown, describes the structures and paper stocks, notes relations with other specimens in the collection and elsewhere, and provides references to literature on many of the individual types shown. Preliminary notes on the type founders and printers who issued the specimens include chronologies of the foundries and information on the origins of their materials, sometimes supplemented with information about the history of the firms and the genealogy of the founders. Nearly all of the nineteen specimens illustrated at their original size appear here for the first time, and extensive indexes make this book a powerful reference tool for type specimen enthusiast and printing historians.

Book excerpt: "Christophe Plantin (c. 1520-1589) was one of the most important publishers in Europe. From his printing firm the Officina Plantiniana on Antwerp's Vrijdagmarkt he sent out into the world an impressive quantity of high-quality books. Plantin was continually seeking out authors, customers and materials. His bags were always packed and at the ready for yet another journey in the interests of his business. He lobbied dignitaries for money, commissions and advocacy. He knocked on the doors of debtors, lodged with friends, and in between times also had family matters to attend to and sort out. Not least, of course, he had books to sell: at his shop in Paris, at the Frankfurt Book Fair, and through his printing business in Leiden. What do we know about Plantin's journeys? What do we know about travelling in the 16th century? What sort of people were taking to the road? How did they manage it? What difficulties and dangers did they encounter? Plantin would not have been able to catch the high-speed train to Paris in the morning and still be home again for his evening meal. Travelling in the 16th century was a venture not to be undertaken lightly. On the Road with Plantin. Travel in the 16th Century sketches a fascinating picture of travel in another age, without the aid of Google Maps and Tripadvisor. Armed instead with a purse full of stivers, thalers and pennies. Taking to dirt tracks and navigating treacherous rivers. Going by horse and cart or by tow barge. Travelling slowly all the way. We are dispatching young photographers to follow in Plantin's footsteps, using different means of transport. In what ways do travel distances and travel times differ from journeys in the 16th century?"--Page 4 of cover.

Book Synopsis Early Printed Music and Material Culture in Central and Western Europe by : Andrea Lindmayr-Brandl
Download or read book Early Printed Music and Material Culture in Central and Western Europe written by Andrea Lindmayr-Brandl and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a varied and nuanced analysis of the dynamics of the printing, publication, and trade of music in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries across Western and Northern Europe. Chapters consider dimensions of music printing in Britain, the Holy Roman Empire, the Netherlands, France, Spain and Italy, showing how this area of inquiry can engage a wide range of cultural, historical and theoretical issues. From the economic consequences of the international book trade to the history of women music printers, the contributors explore the nuances of the interrelation between the materiality of print music and cultural, aesthetic, religious, legal, gender and economic history. Engaging with the theoretical turns in the humanities towards material culture, mobility studies and digital research, this book offers a wealth of new insights that will be relevant to researchers of early modern music and early print culture alike.

This book was released on 2020 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
