Book excerpt: At the center of Cassandra, Chanting is a plot to steal the next American presidential election. Written by an election world insider who must remain anonymous, the novel exposes in authentic and chilling detail just how vulnerable our electoral system is today. It also reveals how warnings by experts are going unheeded and leaving Americans dangerously exposed, just as warnings by the mythological Cassandra went unheeded, resulting in the destruction of ancient Troy. As the novel opens, plotters travel to America and seduce and recruit government officials in order to gain access and then manipulate in undetectable ways the computer programs that control voting systems. The subversive group targets weak leaders and government bureaucrats whose thirst for power or other gain makes them susceptible. They find many eager takers. Meanwhile, the National Institute of Standards and Technology in D.C. has assembled a team led by former Navy SEAL Carl Martello to work on federal election oversight. He is joined by Angela Elanthos, brilliant at computers and decoding, and soon they become suspicious of one of the largest voting companies controlling millions of voting machines, certain they have rigged their programs. Despite government inertia and very different backgrounds, Carl and Angela race against the clock to uncover the high-tech complexities of a plot to fix the outcome of the election. As the novel so alarmingly reveals, the means by which the democratic institutions can be sabotaged within the voting process are all too real, as is the public's continuing indifference to what could happen. Cassandra, Chanting is a gripping tale telling us why we must be ever diligent in protecting our institutions against those who exercise no restraint attempting to destroy those institutions and us. "Embedded in this spell-binder of a novel is a startling and convincing message -- the vulnerability of the very voting system the US is now adopting. The author clearly understands the new system and what makes it tick and shows how it could be 'fixed' to produce a winner different from the popular vote. In the process, the very legitimacy of our political system would be subverted. November 2008 is not so far away. We must heed this warning." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in an era rife with cultural conflict. The 21st century is by no means free of wars, terrorism, riots, famine, nor epidemics. We may attempt to solve the challenges of our times by uniting the humanistic disciplines of philosophy, science, and technology. Our modern reality requires a fundamental understanding of the problems beleaguering our existence. Science and literature are key tools for gaining this insight. The wisdom accumulated throughout the centuries by scientists, philosophers, and writers is a solid foundation on which modern man can build the future. Our ability to learn from those who have come before is precisely what led Protagoras to declare that “Man is the measure of all things.” Contents: Poetics by Aristotle The Athenian Constitution by Aristotle On Life and Death by Aristotle Agamemnon by Aeschylus The Eumenides by Aeschylus The Choephori by Aeschylus Meditations by Marcus Aurelius Medea by Euripides The Works and Days by Hesiod The Theogony by Hesiod The Shield of Heracles by Hesiod The Odyssey by Homer The Apology of Socrates by Plato Charmides by Plato Crito by Plato Euthyphro by Plato Ion by Plato Laches by Plato Lysis by Plato Menexenus by Plato The Republic by Plato The Allegory of the Cave by Plato Symposium by Plato Meno by Plato Phaedo by Plato Critias by Plato The Complete Poems by Sappho Antigone by Sophocles

Book excerpt: This collection presents the works of the three fathers of ancient Greek tragedies: Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. The reader of this collection will be able to comprehend how the plots and conflicts populating classical tragedy developed. The principle theme of Aeschylus’ tragedies is the idea of fate being omnipotent and the futility in struggling against it. The tragedies of Sophocles reflect the era of the Greeks’ victorious war against the Persians, which opened up commercial prosperity through trade. Euripides propels his dramas by incorporating conflicts from within the human psyche. Euripides: Medea Sophocles: Antigone Aeschylus: Agamemnon Aeschylus: Eumenides Aeschylus: The Choephori

Book excerpt: Dark rituals performed with royal blood… Della Marshal still doesn’t believe in magic, wizards, or deadly curses. What happened to her had to be hallucinations. But when Lucas and Richard’s friend Autumn is kidnapped in public, Della can’t deny the trouble they are in is very real. Autumn is a rejected illegitimate member of the British royal family. Since there are certain rituals that can only be performed with someone with royal blood, those from occult circles could use Autumn to warp magic and activate the power of ley lines for nefarious means. No matter what she believes, Della has to help. And so does Lucas’s gorgeous ex-girlfriend Cassandra. Della’s intuitive powers, her Talent, leads the crew to London’s Highgate Cemetery, home of the Highgate Vampire, and then underground in the Thames Water sewer systems to follow the city’s many ley lines. As Della fights off the attacks of nonhuman entities to save her friends, she can’t continue denying that magic is real, and that she belongs in this world because it needs her. However, it was in the Europe of the twentieth century – one of the most violent periods of human history – that the tragic form significantly developed. ‘Modern European Tragedy’ examines the consciousness of this era, drawing a picture of the development of the tragic through an in-depth analysis of some of the twentieth century’s most outstanding texts.

In his ongoing adventures in the services of Queen and Empire, Ulysses Quicksilver – hero and dandy – begins to uncover the corruption and decay in his beloved Britannia. This worthy tome collects three tales of desperation: EVOLUTION EXPECTS: After nearly 160 years as the supreme power on the planet, the British Empire has become stagnant and corrupt. The new Prime Minister, Devlin Valentine, promises change, but some lack the patience for politics. With a dangerous vigilante stalking the streets, a monster on the loose in the East End and rival gangs fighting for control, there may be nothing Ulysses – trapped in the notorious Bedlam Hospital – can do to prevent a catastrophic metamorphosis! BLOOD ROYAL: With the city, and the Empire, reeling from the transformations of a month before, a twisted new religion rises from the devastation. In the meantime, in Europe, the spectre of war rears its ugly head; and rumours hint at monsters, things of myth, on both sides. Ulysses Quicksilver, fighting for peace and for reason – for civilisation itself – follows a path that leads him from the shattered streets of London to the icy wastes at the heart of a secretive, bloody empire. DARK SIDE: Searching for his brother Barty, Ulysses heads to the British Lunar colonies. The trail leads him and his faithful butler into the path of unsolved murders, battling robots, shady millionaires and uncanny inventions. Stalled when he ends up on the wrong side of Lunar law and hunted by a mysterious eyepatch-wearing stranger, the dandy adventurer will uncover, in a secret base on the dark side of the moon, truths that will challenge everything he knew about Britannia...
