Book excerpt: The single quality that sets the English apart from their European cousins is that they are an island people. Their closest neighbours are the fish in the sea. This unusual relationship brings out unexpected behaviour and highlights their eccentricity: they drive on the opposite side of the road to the rest of the world; like their beer warm rather than cold; prefer roundabouts to traffic lights; pretend that foreign languages don't exist; sprinkle vinegar over their chips and for centuries used a peculiar measurement system with strange units of feet, stones and hands. The English are indeed an enigmatic folk, normal on the surface, but stranger with every layer revealed: encyclopaedias could be written about their quirky habits. This slim volume attempts no more than to scratch the surface of a big subject.

Book excerpt: “Bishop-Stall insists that hangovers… [are] worthy of a cure. After years of dogged research around the globe, he finds one — just in time for the holidays.” —Washington Post “[An] irreverent, well-oiled memoir…Bishop-Stall packs his book with humorous and enlightening asides about alcohol.” —The Wall Street Journal One intrepid reporter's quest to learn everything there is to know about hangovers, trying all of the cures he can find and explaining how (and if) they work, all so rest of us don't have to. We've all been there. One minute you're fast asleep, and in the next you're tumbling from dreams of deserts and demons, into semi-consciousness, mouth full of sand, head throbbing. You're hungover. Courageous journalist Shaughnessy Bishop-Stall has gone to the front lines of humanity's age-old fight against hangovers to settle once and for all the best way to get rid of the aftereffects of a night of indulgence (short of not drinking in the first place). Hangovers have plagued human beings for about as long as civilization has existed (and arguably longer), so there has been plenty of time for cures to be concocted. But even in 2018, little is actually known about hangovers, and less still about how to cure them. Cutting through the rumor and the myth, Hungover explores everything from polar bear swims, to saline IV drips, to the age-old hair of the dog, to let us all know which ones actually work. And along the way, Bishop-Stall regales readers with stories from humanity's long and fraught relationship with booze, and shares the advice of everyone from Kingsley Amis to a man in a pub.

Book excerpt: The Long Road Home As The Long Road Home begins on the eve of World War II, a band of three friends, Tom Cooper, Chris Cason, and Tom's six-year-younger sister, Casey, are at a crossroads in their lives. When Chris, the natural leader of the three, announces his intentions to join the Army Air Corps, Tom immediately decides to join with him. Casey, having always believed that she would grow up to marry Chris, is devastated. When war breaks out, however, Casey pitches in, eventually becoming a nurse's aide in the Red Cross. Bill Evans, a boy her own age, sees Chris's absence as his opportunity to win her love from Chris. Casey's heart, however, belongs to Chris, leaving Bill angry and resentful. With action in England during the Battle of Britain, Operation: Torch in North Africa, and a mission into Italy, The Long Road Home details the lives, loves and losses of the three friends as they continue to intersect. Plane crashes, secret weddings, and secret missions bring with them barriers, but Bill Evan's treachery poses the greatest threat to the friends' happiness. As though the Hand of God were writing the final chapter, Chris, Casey and Tom battle through the horrors of war and the terror of betrayal to reach the end of their long road home to love, happiness, and each other.

Book excerpt: The Playmaker: My only goal is to heal from this concussion and get back on the ice—until Nina Callaghan shows up at my door asking for hockey lessons. She’s my best friend’s kid sister, which puts her in the hands-off zone, so I used to tease her without mercy—the ballerina on ice—until a knee injury grounded her. But little Nina is all grown up now, and wants something from me, and I sure as hell want something back. Now it's game on, and I'm pulling out all the plays. The Stick Handler: Call me a prick for canceling our wedding at the eleventh hour, but when my ex threatens to ruin my career and reputation, it’s the icing on the uncut wedding cake. She gives me a week to reconsider, and I take it—at the Italian resort booked for the honeymoon that will never be, and there’s no one I’d rather take with me than Katee, the girl who has held a special place in my heart since forever. When the concierge mistakes her for the bride, we go with it. Only problem is, the place reeks of romance and keeping my hands to myself might prove to be the toughest game I’ve ever played. The Body Checker: I’m all about the game, a no attachment, no strings kind of guy, so when a puck bunny shows up at my door, shoves a pink bundle into my hands and drives off into the sunset, it turns my world upside down. I’m not cut out to be a family man. I know nothing about babies and I’m the last guy who should be taking care of one. But I do know someone who is equipped for the job—Quinn Reed, my best friend’s kid sister. Problem is, she kind of…hates me.

Book excerpt: Former Marine sniper and CIA target man Atticus Steed, turned professional hit man, now only takes down special targets...people who for one reason or another have literally gotten away with murder. Directed by an unknown, unseen employer who identifies himself simply as Omega, Steed receives his sketchy instructions for the hits via text message from a burner phone. But who is Atticus Steed, really? And how does his employer gain knowledge about cases from all over the country...cases involving those murderers who for whatever reason have been set free by the system? Finally, who is funding the kind of money that pays the best hit man out there? Traveling with Steed is his beautiful lady friend, Maria Cortez, who believes from Atticus' night and day surveillance, he is simply a high-priced private investigator for a large nationwide detective firm. Only days after they met two years before and fell in love, she gave up a career to go on the road with him, finding herself enjoying not only their ever-developing relationship but a lavish lifestyle made possible by the man about whom she actually knows very little. But as she now seems to be tiring of the hotels, boredom and nomadic life, she doesn't realize that Atticus' non-committal attitude in their relationship is actually his way of keeping her from danger. Hot on Steed's trail are two tenacious Special Agents for the FBI, John Hickcock and Maggie Larsen, who having figured out who he is, find that their investigation of him leads them to the very hierarchy of the Department of Justice. As the agents continue tracking Steed, they are suddenly alarmed to learn the name of his next target. But will Steed carry out the hit? If he refuses, he knows there will be a new and final target in the making. Him. Will you hope he is caught or root for him to get away? Down to the last chapter, you still may not have your mind made up.

Book excerpt: For Broadway audiences of the 1980s, the decade was perhaps most notable for the so-called “British invasion.” While concept musicals such as Nine and Stephen Sondheim's Sunday in the Park with George continued to be produced, several London hits came to New York. In addition to shows like Chess, Me and My Girl, and Les Miserables, the decade’s most successful composerAndrew Lloyd Webberwas also well represented by Cats, The Phantom of the Opera, Song & Dance, and Starlight Express. There were also many revivals (such as Show Boat and Gypsy), surprise hits (The Pirates of Penzance), huge hits (42nd Street), and notorious flops (Into the Light, Carrie, and Annie 2: Miss Hannigan's Revenge). In The Complete Book of 1980s Broadway Musicals, Dan Dietz examines in detail every musical that opened on Broadway during the 1980s. In addition to including every hit and flop that debuted during the decade, this book highlights revivals and personal-appearance revues with such performers as Sid Caesar, Barry Manilow, Jackie Mason, and Shirley MacLaine. Each entry includes the following information Opening and closing dates Plot summaries Cast members Number of performances Names of all important personnel including writers, composers, directors, choreographers, producers, and musical directors Musical numbers and the names of performers who introduced the songs Production data, including information about tryouts Source material Critical commentary Tony awards and nominations Details about London and other foreign productions Besides separate entries for each production, the book offers numerous appendixes, including a discography, filmography, and published scripts, as well as lists of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, black-themed shows, and Jewish-themed productions. A treasure trove of information, The Complete Book of 1980s Broadway Musicals provides readers with a comprehensive view of each show. This significant resource will be of use to scholars, historians, and casual fans of one of the greatest decades in musical theatre history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book The author was living in a Senior Independent Living Center in Severna Park MD, when the Covid 19 pandemic struck. Everything was locked down. She was bored. What better time to write about “what was it like back when” as her family had been urging her to do. She begins her book by inviting you to a holiday dinner, speaking to the reader, personally. Her keen sense of humor is obvious as she tells of growing up in a small town in the hills of western Maryland. It was 1924. In 1941, when attending college, WWII was raging on two fronts. She wanted to help. She spent 2 summers working at a Women’s Land Army Camp, harvesting crops. The army desperately needed Physical Therapists. Having the required biology credits, she accepted the Army’s offer for training, at an army hospital and became a Physical Therapist. She describes working with soldiers with amputated legs and peripheral nerve injuries. They were not pitied but encouraged to find humor even in such situations. She writes of her excitement and wonder as she travels to Norway, the Passion Play in Germany, the Canyons and Parks in the west. There are funny tales of tent camping with her brother and sister-in-law. She drove her “little red sable” and followed them, using a CB to communicate, (calling M & M, this is Red Sable, over) In her book Esther Davis Lang has made history interesting, funny and easy to read.
